Experience the Evolution of the Big-Wave Surfboard
Saturday & Sunday, November 15 & 16
Patagonia Cardiff shop
The evolution of the big-wave surfboard, or what pioneer surfer Buzzy Trent called an "elephant gun," can be traced back to 1937, when John Kelley cut down the width of his square-tailed redwood plank to keep the board from sliding out in hollower waves. Since then, shapers and surfers like George Downing, Joe Quigg, Greg Noll, Pat Curren, Mike Diffenderfer and others, have provided tremendous design contributions toward the paddle-in big-wave boards of today.
Stop by Patagonia Cardiff any time the weekend of Nov. 15 & 16 to see a display of historic big-wave guns courtesy of the Surf Heritage Foundation (SHF). Talk with SHF museum docents and take an informed trip through the evolution of this board design genre. For more info on SHF please visit www.surfingheritage.com.
