Crude Awakening

Help Protect Our Coast

An oil pipeline ruptured in Santa Barbara County on May 19, 2015, tarring the California coast with 140,000 gallons of thick crude oil that killed wildlife, soiled protected areas and closed beaches. With your help, we supported four recent bills in the California Legislature—three of which were signed into law on October 8, 2015. Join us in staying vigilant and continuing to fight risky oil development on our sensitive coast!

#CrudeAwakening

The mission of #CrudeAwakening is to protect our coast from future oil spills. The California Legislature and Governor Jerry Brown have taken a positive step forward by passing a trio of important bills (SB414, AB864 and SB295) that will improve pipeline safety related to offshore oil and gas production and enhance our ability to respond to oil spills.

While a fourth bill (SB788) that would have stopped new oil drilling along our coast was unfortunately killed in committee, we will continue to push hard for protection of our sensitive coast.

Our friends at The Environmental Defense Center and Santa Barbara Channelkeeper are leading the way locally, and Surfrider Foundation is working statewide and nationally on this important issue. We will continue to support their efforts and share new actions in the future!
