UPF Fabric

Lacking fur, feathers or scales, we humans have to think up clever ways to protect ourselves from the sun. Products with the UPF designation provide built-in sun protection that won’t wear off.

To achieve sun protection, Patagonia takes a varied approach, depending on the degree of protection desired and the fabric used. Elements of the strategy can range from yarn selection to fabric construction to the use of special finishes (especially for light colors which generally provide less protection).

Water Resistant

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the shorts, miss the adjustable waist I had these last summer for my infant daughter - loved the adjustable/button waist band. This summer bought two more pairs and they are great for active toddlers as they don't stain easily, virtually indestructible and dry quickly. However, I thought it was just the larger size that didn't have the adjustable waistband - but from reading other reviews it looks like the change was this season's shorts. Patagonia, please put those adjustable waistbands back in all your baggies shorts for kiddos and you'd have the perfect summer short!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Shorts Bought these in size 5 for our 4 year old daughter. She is quite tiny and these fit her very well. The elastic in tight enough to keep them from falling as well. They dry very quickly and are very versatile. Of all her shorts, these seem to be her most versatile and stain resistant.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from HUGE waist I love the print and material of these shorts and I was initially drawn to them because they seem so versatile for our hot, wet Houston summers. However, the waist is HUGE. Just too big for my slim, active kids. And there is no adjustable waistband, meaning they are a no-go. Sizing up would mean the shorts would be too short. Out of curiosity, I continued to size down to see exactly what size waist would accommodate my 8-yr-old daughter, and it was the size 4 (FOUR!). Wow. If you have husky children, these would probably be great, but for more slim-to-average-waisted kids, these are going to be too big. Patagonia, please add a drawstring/adjustable waist to these shorts and/or consider making them with a smaller waistband. Thank you!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from ditto on waist adjustment I ordered these online and misunderstood "fully adjustable waistband" in the features to mean that, as in last year's version of the Baby Baggies, the waistband included adjuster elastic/buttons. My child is very tall and slender and these adjusters are critical for reaching a wearable medium between the waist size and leg coverage! This year's waist elastic did seem flimsy and the material was also felt less strong and less durable. With so many strikes against the Baby Baggies this year, these went back and I'm so disappointed!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ignore These! No waist adjustment Anymore. Very disappointed in this years baggies. Previous years either had either a drawstring or a cool button elastic adjustment, which let the shorts grow with your children. These have absolutely no waist adjustment. Good luck keeping them on in the water, because the elastic in these already feels stretched out. The material this year is also much thinner then previous years. Very unfortunate my daughters favorite shorts this year will not be from Patagonia. Please let someone design these that has kids again!
