Dragged, slung, dropped and rolled—just another day for the Black Hole®. Highly durable and highly weather-resistant, this bag protects your gear from rough handling. The main compartment is accessed by a zippered U-shaped lid, which has a pair of zippered mesh pockets on the underside for small items. A zippered exterior pocket holds the stuff you need to access quickly. The padded bottom panel adds structure and helps cushion the load when your duffel gets the baggage-handler treatment. Carrying options include padded removable shoulder straps, webbing handles with a snap closure and haul loops at either end that facilitate linking multiple bags. Four daisy chains let you lash additional gear to the outside. Made from 15-oz 900-denier polyester ripstop (50% solution-dyed) with a TPU-film laminate and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

Water Resistant

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for traveling teenager I bought this duffel for my son's 3 week trip to Costa Rica. Perfect size for travel. Rugged sturdy construction. Backpack straps very convenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good to Go After more than a full day of transcontinental travel from Juno, Alaska to Atlanta, Georgia that saw no less than 3 plane changes I snatched my Black Hole 90L of a hectic baggage claim carousel at Hartsfield International to a series of admiring glances and a couple of earnest inquires about its durability and toughness. As I shared my brief 90L experience with those fellow travelers we watched as a suitcase and a duffel bag popped up from the baggage ramp wrapped with just enough airline tape to hold together what was left of bags that had seen better days. Clothing and personal items tuck out in all directions as we wondered aloud how the owners would be able to tetrieve them with both their property and pride intact. My 90L appeared none the worse for wear and looked as good to go as it did just prior to its first trip just a few weeks before. In my brief experience with the 90L I've only found 2 things that might possibly make it even better than it already is if that's even possible. The first would be zippered gear pockets on each end to provide quick access to whatever you might deem critical. The second would be the addition of a detachable one shoulder strap in those situations where you need more than the hand carry straps but less than the full utilization of the backpack straps. I'm taking this 90L overseas soon and I have no doubt it's up to the challenge and will once again prove that it's good to go. Cudos Patagonia!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Tough Bag Bought this just before a trip where this bag survived the check in process at two airports twice and riding on the backs of two donkeys. Haven't been able to test waterproof capabilities but carrying this big bag on my own back was much more comfortable than I thought it would be and I'm really happy with it so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile & perfect for my needs Just back from yet another research trip to Nepal & yet another outstanding performance from the Patagonia duffels & other gear I bring along. The duffels are first rate. I have them in every size but the 90L is by far the most versatile for my needs: getting gear from the USA to Nepal in the hold of a plane, bringing that gear to the trailhead on the top of a jeep or truck along some of the worst roads in the world, and then redistributing loads by function so that supplies can get hauled by porters across an 11 & 14,000 ft pass to the remote research site where I need to live for a month or two. While there, the duffel serves for organization and storage. What I mean by "gear" is everything I can't carry in my own backpack: books, office stuff, cooking supplies, clothing, tarps, and whatever else goes for provisioning a research team. I've tried the 120L out and find it great for the plane & jeep, but too much for porters (too tempting to overdo the weight it can contain). This is based on the reports of the guys who carry these on the trail, all of whom agree that the 90L is just right -- holds lots, but keeps the load manageable and humane and the rest stops nicely spaced for all. For the flight to and from Nepal, I put my sleeping bag and backpack inside a duffel and find that they barely make a dent in the capaciousness -- "black hole" is pretty apt. (But I did find that a 90L won't do for that 6 X 8 Tibetan carpet you may want to bring back home with you -- the 120L will take it with room to spare.) These duffels have traveled with me in a whole range of conditions from pre-monsoon rains to snowstorms to gouts of choking dust at the top of a jeep or truck. They've been dropped in mud, covered with heavy morning dew and thick frost. They inevitably get used for comfortable seating (I don't let them get too close to the fire) and that doesn't faze them. They've enjoyed the perfect blue sky and crisp weather days, too. And never a problem with dust, dirt, mud, or moisture getting inside (though I respect the truth that these aren't water-proof & wax the seams in wet weather while making sure they are set down with the most water-repellent surface skyward). For carrying long distances, the cooler and cold temperatures are best to prevent a sweaty back, but I kept checking with the guys doing the carrying & they all spoke highly of the general comfort when things were packed right. The daisy chains are wonderful for lashing things to the bags -- thumbs up from all the porters on that. As for durability, these bags take a beating every step of the journey -- some have made three round trips as described above and, wiped down, they look like new. Barely abraded from rock and thorn and nowhere a concern that they can't make it as many future trips and more. A great investment! I recommend these bags. And so do a bunch of guys from a high mountain village in Nepal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Duffels On Market This was my third Black Hole, so I'm obviously a fan. These things are 99% waterproof, can take a beating, but still look great. A super sturdy bag that doubles as really nice luggage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great bag, with one feature request... I *really* like this bag. It is roomy, durable and really works well for me with ONE exception: it needs an optional over-the-shoulder strap like a "normal" duffel bag. As you can see, it only comes with backpack straps. That's great for trips where you are carrying it through an airport, etc. However, when I use this as a weekend/short trip bag I *really* want it to have a normal strap. The backpack straps come off easily and Patagonia could easily provide (or sell) a "normal" duffel strap (similar to what is on the 45L but with connectors made for the 90L backpack attachment points). It could attach at the top connection of the left strap and connect diagonally to the bottom connection of the right strap. It would be a piece of cake to design and implement and would make this bag much more user friendly. I realize I could use one of my backpack straps in this manor but it would require adjusting the length each time I want to use it that way--plus the padding isn't quite right for that sort of carry. Please consider this, Patagonia!
