Water Resistant

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Black Hole® Mini Messenger 12L is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty good Itʻs just the right size. (I carry a camera around with me, and want to leave a little room for small purchases when Iʻm out in the city.) The larger messengers are just too unwieldy. It has the right number & placement of pockets. BUT 1) I also wanted a small bag I could slip onto the handle of my luggage and then slip under the airline seat as my small carry-on. Thereʻs no sleeve on the rear that allows that, and the top handle is just a little too small. Yes, I know Patagagonia sells another larger product that does that, but I want to use this one. I had to purchase an extra strap and rig up an inelegant way to secure the Black Hole Mini Messenger to my luggage handle. Patagonia could have solved this issue by making the top handle just a little wider, so that it will accommodate a luggage handle. ALSO 2) The strap is attached at a weird angle and gets bunched up at one end of the plastic fixture where it is attached on one side of the bag. The only way to prevent this is to extend the strap all the way so that the buckle is next to that plastic fixture and holds the strap in place. I use the bag now with the strap fully extended - no choice. I wish Patagonia had a removable strap on this bag. OK, there was one more drawback, but I fixed it, so no problem. Hereʻs the fix. The velcro on the front is REALLY irritating every time I want to open the flap. Every $^&* time. So ... I want to a fabric store and purchased lengths of 2" black velcro meant for sewing onto fabric (without adhesive on the back) and stuck the fuzzy half onto the velcro on the front of the bag. Presto - the flap opens easily and quietly. When I want to secure it, I use the two built-in fixtures - or just peel down some of the velcro I added to the front. Patagonia really should sell the bag with those lengths of optional velcro already in place.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect size for city commuting I commute every day in New York City so I don't like carrying too much on me - this bag is just big enough to carry my laptop and random things for work - plus I really appreciate that nothing inside gets wet when it rains/snows! This is my first Patagonia bag, so I don't know how it compares to older versions, but I don't have any complaints about the design of it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from New Design Disappoints The prior version of the Black Hole Mini Messenger bag is brilliant. I have travelled with it extensively around the world and use it in Vancouver daily. It holds up to desert, jungle, mule, train, airport and urban travel perfectly. Regrettably this revised design is a significant disappointment in comparison. The very useful back Velcro-operated section has been eliminated. The fabric now has an off-putting very shiny appearance and the massive size of the Patagonia logo on this size bag creates a laughable, attention-seeking, childish look. Please take our near-unanimous views into account and bring back that which was good and jettison this mistaken design. Thanks in advance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great bag - but I miss the old design I had a version of this bag from years ago that I loved - it was a perfect bag. This bag is great too, but knowing the older design, I wish they hadn't made so many changes. The things that I like with the new bag include a better designated laptop pocket, more space on the inside, and although I thought'd Id hate it, I even like the velcro. But there are three changes that I don't like 1) the the strap is now attached to the bag at the back versus from the sides, and it is designed to be cross-body, however if you just sling it over one shoulder the strap bunches up in the buckle and hangs funny. Its a small detail but it bothers me every time I use this bag. 2) In moving the strap and putting more room inside, they got ride of the hidden back pocket, which was great to pop things into when in a rush (the front zippered doesn't work for that because you have to zip/unzip, or risk dumping whatever is in it when you open your bag). 3) With the exterior streamlining and making the interior more spacious, they also removed the water bottle pocket on the outside, requiring that if you have a water bottle with you, you are either carrying it in your hand or you stick it into the main bag compartment. While of course this works, and there is now space to do so, it means putting it in the same space as my laptop, where any leaks, drips, or spills could cause serious damage.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not what we were expecting I bought the mini-messenger bag as a replacement for my partner's old Patagonia mini-messenger bag. While the dimensions are accurate, this bag was too large compared to his old Patagonia bag. Too bad there is not an even smaller bag that would be sized to fit an iPad. He also thought the new bag was cheaply made (and I agree), compared to his previous bag. The shiny black fabric is more geared for a kid than an adult and really looks inappropriate for a professional setting. I'm keeping it for myself but now need to find another small (micro?) messenger bag to replace the original gift for my partner. Sigh- first world problems, I know.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits all my junk! I splurged and bought this for myself for starting my new job. I was tired of digging around in my backpack for items and wanted to try out a messenger bag. I love it! It fits everything I need for daily survival and doesn't make the bag bulky. It fits my 13" macbook air perfectly. I won't be able to fit extra stuff (i.e. a change of clothes) if I wanted to use it as a solo carry-on, but it does meet all my day-to-day needs. Only con: the should strap tends to bunch up around one of the plastic loops on the bag. Only affects the functionality if I am trying to adjust the strap length while wearing the bag across my chest.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect! I have been using patagonia messenger since the first generation. The material of this black hole series are the best ever. Also the size is spot-on. However the strap are attached to the bag with a buckle, which assumes people will carry the bag across their chest, otherwise if you carry the bag on the shoulder, the strap will jam into the buckle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Man bag I use this bag daily. Stuff it to the brim and compress easily. ****Perhaps adding some stretch side panels to hold larger hydro flask or kleen canteen bottles***** Otherwise great bag, just wished there was more freedom of movement to hold larger round bottles.
