Today’s job descriptions include the ability to cross time zones unfazed, eat lunch while running through crowds and respond to messages from the bouncing aisle of a packed train. With the workweek in mind, our designers created the Headway Brief. It combines the rock-tough durability of our climbing packs with an on-the-go urban aesthetic to meet the demands of our action-sequence lives. Amply sized to carry your day-to-day belongings along with the essentials for an extended weekend, the Headway features a raised-off-the-bottom electronics pocket with separate padded sleeves to hold a laptop (fits most 15-inch laptops) and your e-reader. The main compartment, accessed via a clamshell-opening zipper, holds bulky items like lunch, a sweater and the unfinished novel you’re writing in longhand; mesh pockets provide additional storage. A smaller front compartment keeps you organized with a key clip, mesh stash pockets for your phone and earbuds, and a zip-closing pocket to keep your thumb drive handy. Other details include an outside stash pocket for magazines and a boarding pass; briefcase-style carrying handles; and a fully adjustable, removable shoulder strap. Made from 9.25-oz 940-denier CORDURA® Ballistic nylon with a polyurethane coating and lined with 8.4-oz 600-denier 100% recycled polyester. Both fabrics have a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

  • Briefcase-style carry handles and comfortable shoulder strap (removable)
  • Rear sleeve allows you to slip the tote on and off rolling luggage handles
  • Body: 9.25-oz 940-denier CORDURA® Ballistic 100% nylon with polyurethane coating. Lining: 8.4-oz 600-denier 100% recycled polyester. Both treated with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Water Resistant

(durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Some great features, some poor design choices I purchased this on a trip to Europe.. (also bought a matching Headway Carry-On bag as well). My findings: Positives - Bag is great quality - Straps and Stitching were perfect - Lots of organization options, storage for pens, notepads etc at the front, 2 compartments behind allow for great org - The carry handle is comfortable - The carry-on handle pass through (allowing it to be carried on top of roller luggage) is fantastic - every bag should have this option Negatives - Bag does not sit upright on the floor, if you have a laptop and nothing in the other compartments, the bag will fall over. Every. Single. Time. No matter how you try to stand it up (the bottom of the bag is angled, and not like the photo straight). - You can only carry the bag with a laptop in it nearest to you, the bags handles are offset making carrying "weird" if you don't carry it that way around - The front pocket has lots of great storage pockets, however if the bag is packed, you can hardly get in, making it difficult to find items as it's only zipped at the top. The front panel NEEDS to be a clamshell cover so it can be opened completely. - The cover for the shoulder strap will slip on anything. It needs an anti-slip feature and more padding. Some annoying negatives which I raised with customer service. They offered to take back the bag without any prompting from me! I refused ;-) Fantastic & quick customer service which will definitely lead me to purchase from them in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Bag I just got this to replace a worn traditional briefcase. It is a very well constructed and durable bag. I was very surprised at the quality of construction for the very reasonable price. Exceeds expectations. Built to last.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Bag, Bad Shoulder Strap Love the bag its great as a daily briefcase, it carries everything I need and fits my work laptop, personal air mac and an iPad no problem. I HATE the shoulder strap, it provides no grip on any of my clothing and is constantly sliding down my arm, even more so when when wearing a nano puff jacket. I think some extra rubber on the pad to give some grip / friction would go a very long way. This is why I gave 4 stars vs 5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Headway Brief can carry the day, and the night! This Headway Brief might just be the reincarnation of my old Patagonia Valise. The whole shape is longer and better proportioned for today's mobile office than the Valise was. The outer material is softer but still burly and the DWR has already resisted several showers. The rear zipped compartment really does fit my 15" laptop and my tablet and keeps them off the bottom, with just enough room for a medium power brick and external hard drive with cords. The front compartment has organizing pockets for pens, ID lanyard, phone charger, and business cards and is easier to access (simply zip open) than the front pocket on the Valise (unbuckle the lid, then unzip). The back stash pocket is longer yet similar to the Valise, and the zippered sleeve that allows sturdy attachment to rolling luggage is an important update. The middle zippered pocket is where the soul of the Valise has been reborn - large, multi-use space that is even larger capacity and less cluttered than the Valise, has a padded bottom, and can toggle easily from hauling a full days worth of work files to toting the toiletries, fleece vest, and change of clothes for overnights. The light-colored interior fabric makes it easier to find the flash drives, the rubber bands for the stacks of 3 x 5 cards, and those renegade expense receipts that always find their way to the bottom. I only wish this Brief came with its own House Elf so I could toggle from 'Work' to 'Play' sooner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect if you fly to the office Same great design but updated with Cordura, perfect size for overnights...this is my new go travel brief. Great color (Oaks Brown), reminds me of a modern/tech version of a classic Filson. Replacing a Mountain Hardware Enterprise Backpack.
