UPF Fabric

Lacking fur, feathers or scales, we humans have to think up clever ways to protect ourselves from the sun. Products with the UPF designation provide built-in sun protection that won’t wear off.

To achieve sun protection, Patagonia takes a varied approach, depending on the degree of protection desired and the fabric used. Elements of the strategy can range from yarn selection to fabric construction to the use of special finishes (especially for light colors which generally provide less protection).

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great multi-purpose shirt You can own less clothing if the stuff you have works in multiple situations. I see this as a great option for biking to work, long road trips, or just in a casual setting. The odor control helps give it that flexibility. I'm not sure the venting does much. I don't feel much air flow when biking with this shirt. Larger arm holes would help air flow to the back. The fit is improved over earlier similar shirts as there's more room in the shoulders. It's a minor issue, but metal snaps can be a slightly uncomfortable when riding in cool weather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite shirt I have had this shirt about 6 months, and I love it so much that I bought another today. This shirt breathes well and dries so fast, it is fantastic shirt to wear in hot weather, and strenuous activity. This shirt is surprisingly durable for how light weight it is. My favorite part of this shirt might be the fit. I am 6'3' 170lbs, and being tall and lean makes it hard to find shirts that fit well. The large looks like it was tailored to my exact dimensions. I love the snap-rings. I only wish that they had more color choices. I would love a few solid colors to choose from. Plaid and stripes do not go with everything.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cool, as is it ahhhhhh, it's not so hot. I recently purchased this thin napkin of a shirt and I must say I'm quite pleased. It has a nice little vent system in the back that makes me feel even more breezy while I wear it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect travel shirt for tropical climates! I purchased this shirt right before an early summer trip to Cuba, and it was absolutely perfect! Lightweight, quick-drying, well ventilated, and handled a lot of sweat without smelling awful, everything I was hoping for!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A warm weather workhorse A great warm weather shirt. This short is a workhorse that I would recommend for all hiking trips and climbing excursions. It drys fairly quickly and is resistant to staining. Ironing out all of the wrinkles can be a little challenging as the shirt seems to be prone to them. I would also recommend sizing up a bit if you have broad shoulders of a wide back/ athletic build as I can not completely "hug" myself in this shirt because it gets a little tight across the back/shoulders. This causes a little bit of restriction of movement but nothing major. Great shirt.
