After numerous requests from our ambassadors, we designed this one-piece suit for ice climbers, alpinists and skiers who pull on their baselayers and don’t take them off until the action ends. The micro-grid fleece interior of our Capilene® Thermal Weight provides the greatest warmth combined with the greatest breathability of any baselayer in our lineup. Soft, stretchy and compressible, the Polartec® Power Grid™ fabric has a smooth face that glides beneath layers and a brushed fleece interior to warm your core, wick moisture and feel smooth against your skin. Capilene® Thermal Weight has 30-92% recycled content and is treated with Polygiene® permanent odor control. Features include a high collar and self-fabric hood with anatomical shaping for warmth, a long center-front zipper for venting, a gusseted crotch for mobility, a functional fly, a side-zip drop-bottom, flatlock seams to minimize chafing, and offset shoulder and side seams to lie smoothly beneath pack straps.
  • Polartec® Power Grid™ fabric (with Polygiene® permanent odor control) has a smooth face for easy layering; fabric’s open-grid pattern next to skin provides superior warmth, breathability and moisture-wicking performance; spandex for stretch and ease of movement
  • High collar and self-fabric hood with anatomical shaping for warmth; long center-front zipper vents body heat and is backed by kissing welts for low-bulk comfort next to skin
  • Offset shoulder seams eliminate chafing under pack straps
  • Full underarm gusset for range of motion and chafe-free comfort
  • Gusseted crotch for comfort and unimpeded mobility
  • Functional fly and fully closing zip drop bottom

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Odor Resistant

Polygiene® odor control permanently protects your garments from smelling like a middle school locker room. Sweat itself is odorless, but it creates the conditions that bacteria need to multiply, and some of those bacteria produce odors. Polygiene permanent odor control stops the growth of odor-causing bacteria on fabrics, so you can wear more and wash less.

Active only on the fabric surface, Polygiene permanent odor control does not interfere with perspiration or with the skin’s natural bacterial flora. Polygiene particles are more than 100 times larger than nanoparticles and therefore are too large to penetrate to the skin’s barrier. Polygiene-treated fabrics have received Medical Class 1 approval in Europe, the same class that includes bandages.

Men's Capilene® Thermal Weight One-Piece Suit is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for cold alpine climbs! I bought this suit for a winter trip to Chimney Pond in Baxter State Park and ice climbing on Katahdin. It is an excellent base layer for very cold temps (climbing in 0-5 degree weather). Highly recommended. Zipper opening at the butt works great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Base Layer! I bought this specifically as a replacement for my old Merino one-piece base layer from another company. I love that this is WAY easier to wash and maintain. The fit is relatively spot on, but it tends to get stretched out after a few days of wear without a wash. I noticed that the thumb loops were digging into my hand when in use, but that's a minor issue and not a deal breaker at all. I have had no issues being cold, and the hood is a great addition for when it gets blustery. Overall, a good substitute especially since I don't need to dry clean it or wash with any specific detergent (and air dry)...well done Patagonia!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smothers the body in comfort Comfy suit in and out doors. I ordered my Patagonia Men's Capilene Thermal Weight One-Piece Suit from I hadn’t used the site before and this is my first Patagonia item. The one-piece arrived quickly and just in time as the air temperature that day was minus 6 F. The fit is tapered. Not bulky. Tension at the ankle is smooth and just right. Some features I didn’t think would matter to me were the thumb cuff loops, zip back-side, and hood. However, the people at Patagonia know what they’re doing, and I do appreciate the attention to details and the added features. I thought the hood would be a hindrance. The hood is fun, well fitted, fashion forward, and a benefit in cold air. The hood is well designed and conforms to my head. It stays back far enough so it doesn’t hinder vision. I thought the hood would be bulky but it lies flat when not in use. I wore the union suit indoors under clothes at work. The green hood sticking out from my grey wool sweater drew unexpected complements. Didn’t think a union suit could be a fashion item but many co-workers thought it would be a great gift for their spouses who spend time outdoors. A union suit has advantages of no air leaks, no tugging, and overall comfort. This union suit fits better than most with a good amount of taper and just enough stretch. It remains comfortable both indoors and outdoors. I took it cross-country skiing. The cold bit my face but the suit kept the rest of me comfortable. The hood really came into play. I didn’t notice I was sweating until after I took it off and my body continued to generate heat. The wicking works without notice. Also without notice I subconsciously tucked my chin down into the zipped collar while skiing. The price is high but a union suit will last for years so the extra details my make it worth the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Skiing! I think this is probably one of the best single pieces I own. Great for skiing in the resorts and in the backcountry. It keeps me warm when I am on the chairlift and snow out of my waist on deeper days. I also love how well this breaths when I am touring in the backcountry. Really couldn't ask for a better base layer. The one-piece is great! I am very tall and as a result have no butt, typical long underwear always falls down throughout the day and lets lots of snow in. This one - piece solved all my problems haha! And it is funny to wear around the house! Yet another great addition from Patagonia! Great Job!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beyond all expectation. I bought this to wear under my drysuit for a December trip on the Colorado River. Two weeks in the Grand Canyon and I only took it off a couple of times to wash up. When I returned home, my wife confirmed- no smell at all. It was comfortable, warm, light, and bomb proof. If you're gonna buy a one-piece, this is it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Six stars Pants and tops always leave a gap that allows heat to escape and cold to enter around your back. This base layer prevents drafts or penetration from the cold. If you have ever had nature call in -10 degree snow storms, you would know that you will freeze your butt off literally. This hooded full body capaline base layer is AMAZING. I pretty much live in this thing since I bought it. It's been a cold, snowy winter in California and this thing is a life saver.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bomb Skiing Baselayer for Cold Days This onesie is the best in the cold. The insulation system is ribbed fleece, so it is warm, but does not necessarily overheat. The onesie design seems to retain more heat than a traditional two piece base-layer system. The hood is a nice detail. I ended up wearing this often in the winter, and rarely in the spring. For skiing on cold days the onesie is a great choice for me because I rarely change my layering during the day while skiing. It is not an extremely versatile piece, but whenever the temperature is below 15 degrees this is what I reach for in my closet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super awesome "Almost Perfect" My family and I received these for the holidays. This is the best base layer that I've put on in my life I'm pretty sure. Its heavy enough to keep you warm through the wind and snow, but doesn't hold in a bunch of sweat, making you sticky and cold. I've used it for multiple cold days of skiing, hiking, or just doing work outside while staying warm. Totally awesome product. With that being said, I'm about 6'1 - 155lbs. I've got a few feet of hair that I need to constantly deal with while doing activities. The retraction of a hair slit in the neck is a bummer. I really liked the cutout on the women's model that my girlfriend was super excited to show me. This has kept me from utilizing my hood more often than not, as my hair becomes an unmanageable bump under a hood hat / helmet... Guys do have long hair too!
