Built to stand up to day-in, day-out work, our Iron Forge Hemp® Canvas Cargo Pants are made from strong and supple 12.9-oz 55% industrial hemp/27% recycled polyester/18% organic cotton cloth that’s 25% more abrasion resistant than conventional cotton duck canvas and needs no break-in. One of the world’s strongest natural fibers, the hemp content provides superior toughness and durability; the recycled polyester and organic cotton provide a soft hand and allow a tighter weave for increased abrasion resistance. A roomy fit and gusseted crotch offer comfort and range of motion for climbing steps or working with one leg up; the contoured waistband sits comfortably under a tool belt and has 7 belt loops for extra heft if you’re hanging tools off a regular belt; the waist closure has a zip fly and top button. Two front drop-in pockets have horizontal gussets that hold a clip knife or tape measure, and the two deep drop-in back pockets serve as a double fabric layer for extra durability. The bellowed cargo pockets have flaps that can be tucked in for quick access to nails, screws or other essentials, and the wide legs can be worn over boots or tucked into the boot tops on wet job sites. Inseam is 30". Fair Trade Certified™ sewn.

Hemp is an alternative natural fiber that’s cultivated with low impact on the environment. It requires no irrigation, uses no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, and is harvested and processed by hand. It’s one of the most durable natural fibers on the planet, and results in a fabric with a wonderful drape, comparable to linen.

Unfortunately, industrial hemp is illegal to grow in most parts of the world because government agencies continue to associate it with marijuana. We currently import our high-quality hemp from China, and continue to hope that it might someday grow freely again.

Patagonia makes garments with hemp alone or blended with other fibers like recycled polyester, organic cotton and spandex.

Men's Iron Forge Hemp® Canvas Cargo Pants - Short is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect I've had a pair since day one, and they are pretty great, except for one thing: they're cargo pants. I wish they were regular ol' carpenter pants. The cut is dialed in just right. Like Levi's 501 waist to thigh, Carhartt work pants below. Big, riveted, double-fabric back pockets. Deep front hand pockets with a bar-tacked knife gusset and pocket bags shaped so things don't fall out. The fabric is mad tough. Very snag resistant but breathable enough you won't cook in them. These have a good cargo pocket design. In general cargo pockets suck though. Hand tools don't stay upright and get jumbled together. If I need 40 fasteners I'm putting on tool bags. Cell phones friggin bang all over the place and into your knees. Wish they had a hammer loop. I'll keep buying double-knee Carhartts until they remake the old Builder's Pants out of this fit and fabric.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Long lasting work pants with plenty of storage. I really dig these cargo pants and the easy access to my work gloves or box cutters and whatever tools are placed in the side pockets. These pants have really handled the abuse and the durability is true for such a comfortable pant. Very pleased with how these pants have performed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Needs Improvement Pro's: Material, construction, style Con's: Button, zipper, crotch Very nice pants, great material looks good and seems durable. I bought the size in Patagonia Double Knee Pants a few weeks back and hoped that the fit would be a little different. It ways both good and bad. The double knee pants were too relaxed, almost sloppy through the legs, theses are a much nicer cut. The crotch of the two pants is where the issue is for me. The gusset crotch in the Double Knee pants is HUGE, more than I would ever need and feels like extra material. These Cargo Pants are just the opposite, same sewn gusset crotch, but they wear tight when sitting, bent over or squatting = plumbers crack. Ultimately, I think these will be great around town pants, but probably won't make it on the job site. 5'9" 220# 38x30

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good first effort All the good stuff Patagonia claims is here: 6 gigantic pockets, including excellent expansion pleats on the cargo pockets; and the back (hip) pockets are cut so they're also quite roomy. The fabric is heavy duty, with a soft, broken-in feel, immediately comfortable. However, there's a few problems: these aren't so much the claimed 'Relaxed Fit' as they are Loose Fit, as in baggy. A second problem I had was with a pair of heavy duty stitch lines on the inside of the waistband. If you wear your shirt tucked in, these are a non-issue; but if you wear your shirt out, after several hours these raised stitches come to resemble tiny razor wires next to your skin. Finally, the zipper pull is what you typically find on women's jeans: it's tiny, not user friendly for either those of us with large fingers or frozen fingers working outdoors in the cold. I'm 5'11", 155 pounds. I normally take a 32" waist in other brands; these, however, were on the tight side at 32, if I had it to do over, I'd get a 33.
