UPF Fabric

Lacking fur, feathers or scales, we humans have to think up clever ways to protect ourselves from the sun. Products with the UPF designation provide built-in sun protection that won’t wear off.

To achieve sun protection, Patagonia takes a varied approach, depending on the degree of protection desired and the fabric used. Elements of the strategy can range from yarn selection to fabric construction to the use of special finishes (especially for light colors which generally provide less protection).

Men's Long-Sleeved El Ray Shirt is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great shirt I like it enough that I bought all 3 colours and a short sleeve.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice shirt if you are not tall I have had this shirt for months and it looks great and is cool in the heat. Unfortunately the sleeves are much shorter than other Patagonia products. I am 6'3" and enjoy the ample sleeve length most of their shirts have. If the large had 35" sleeves I would buy more.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice fabric, ok fit Great fabric for hiking, fishing, etc. Just wish they'd change the fit to make it an inch longer at the bottom and an inch slimmer in the body/sleeve. Not superslim, but it seems everyone at Patagonia must be shorter and wider than me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Good warm weather shirt I'm 5'10 168 pounds and the medium fits me well. I use the shirt for hiking and walking the golf course in lots of direct sunlight. I like being able to securely roll the sleeves up (or down) to alternate the amount of sun my arms get. Both pockets are useful. Note the shirt has snap buttons entirely, I like this design. Light, dries quickly, I ordered the lightest color for maximum cooling and may end up ordering another as I like it so much. Does look wrinkled/worn If that will bother you, but it's fine for outdoors settings in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic I bought this shirt mostly for hiking and just got back from a week in the Caribbean wearing it all day every day. I did hikes through the jungle, got caught in torrential downpours, and lounged in the sun. It feels great on the skin, breathes well, and dries fast. I especially like being able to roll the sleeves up and down as needed, and how easy it is to snap the snaps with one hand. I've also found that the shirt resists odor fairly well and looks good even after being rolled up in a suitcase. A note on sizing: I'm 5'6" 130 lbs. I wear a small for most Patagonia stuff (base layers, torrentshell) but for this shirt the extra small fit much better. The small was boxy and baggy and the extra small is slim enough to look good but with enough room to maneuver freely. The length is perfect for me. Also, for those comparing this to the long haul trucker shirt (another synthetic button down): The el ray is mostly nylon while the long haul trucker is mostly polyester. A super helpful customer service rep told me that polyester is softer and holds moisture against the skin longer, which helps with evaporative cooling. I was more interested in fast drying, and when I tried both on I liked the feel of the El Ray better. It felt more sturdy while the long haul trucker felt more soft and flowy, if that makes sense. To me the El Ray felt more like a classic cotton shirt and the long haul trucker felt more like silk. I'm also really glad it has long sleeves, for sun protection and temperature control.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile, Comfortable, Simple, and Solid I'm warm blooded, active, and not looking to make a fashion statement every time I walk out the door. This shirt has quickly proven to be comfortable against the skin in sun or shade from 50-90 degree temps. It dries fast enough that I hardly notice when it gets wet. In one day I've taken it from wetland restoration, to a hike in the woods, to a meal in a restaurant. It's a little snugger fit and shorter in length than some of Patagonia's other similarly styled shirts, for me that means no bunching up under a fishing vest or set of binoculars and it doesn't flap in the breeze when you don't feel like tucking it in. For me the El Ray will get a lot of use.
