The warmest Merino baselayer made with wool from the grasslands of Patagonia and blended with Capilene® fiber.

Read More Close
We designed these warm, versatile bottoms for cold alpine routes and midwinter riding, but they often find their way into festivities back at the ski hut. Thermal Weight is our warmest Merino baselayer. It's wonderfully soft, has a great warmth-to-weight ratio, breathes and resists odor, stretches and regulates body temperature across a wide range of conditions. Our fine merino wool is from the grasslands of Patagonia. We slow-wash it for softness and shrink resistance without the use of chlorine, then blend it with Capilene® recycled polyester for increased durability, dry times and moisture management. Features include a brushed elastic waistband for next-to-skin softness, a gusseted crotch for mobility, a functional fly and low-bulk merrow seams to minimize chafing. Machine wash cold; machine dry at low temperatures.

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from replacement for my old bottoms While I haven't used these yet, they are a replacement for my old bottoms which have worn out after a couple years of use. I really liked the old ones and only hope these will hold up as long.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just right Bought the top too and both met my expectations. Bottoms were just right for temp over a wide temperature range. Fit was good! Too warm if you above freezing and hiking for awhile.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great thermal layer I bought these like a month ago on sale thinking winter was over and I wouldn't need to wear them until next season. Well winter in Michigan does not go quietly and I have been wearing them. They cold proof any pair of pants they can fit under, love these things. Worth the money even at full price. They are good quality and not thin and cheap like the Carhart ones I got.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Warm The warmth of Patagonia's Merino Wool is second to none. I've have yet to find a company that takes the time and energy that Patagonia put into making there products the best they can be.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great warmth Skied in these for 10 days over the most recent Christmas break - - kept me warm and comfortable. I may have bought once size too large as they fit rather loose and sagged a bit over the day. Always a tough call on sizing
