Read More Close
After more than 15 years of cranking, our R1® fabric is still the gold standard for alpine efficiency. Its high/low grid interior (Polartec® Power Grid™ polyester) is key to the hoody’s versatility, and the highly refined fabric—the lightest and most breathable iteration ever—remains exclusive to Patagonia. It stretches, traps heat and compresses to practically nothing, with the pared-down but versatile features that climbers and backcountry skiers need: a snug-fitting balaclava-style hood; a minimalist, deep-venting front zipper with a soft zipper garage that keeps your chin comfy; and a variable-conditions cuff with discreet on-seam thumb holes and a spiral-stitch construction so you can push up the sleeves with no ensuing forearm pump. With off-shoulder seams for pack-wearing comfort, a long torso for layering under a harness, an exterior chest pocket and Polygiene® permanent odor control.
  • Exclusive to Patagonia, this Polartec® Power Grid™ fabric with Polygiene® permanent odor control is light and breathable with outstanding stretch and durability
  • Snug-fitting, balaclava-style hood fits comfortably under a helmet strap; center-front slim zip with a soft kissing-welt zipper garage at chin for next-to-skin comfort
  • Raglan sleeves for increased mobility and off-shoulder seaming for comfort under a pack
  • Pullover silhouette has deep center-front zipper for quick venting
  • One left-chest pocket has slim zip install, zipper garage and mesh pocket bag
  • Sleeves have discreet on-seam thumb holes for wrist coverage in cold conditions

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Men's R1® Hoody is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 51.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I think the R1 hoody is one of the best, most versatile products that Patagonia makes. The hoody is perfect to keep your neck warm, either as a neck buff or a full hood. The extra length and the thumb holes ensures everything stays were it should stay. I originally bought the R1 hoody back in 2009 and recently purchased another one because I lost my first one while traveling. The new one has a center zipper on the chin instead of the off-center zipper on the 2009 version which I liked so much (please bring it back) and the material seemed thicker and more durable (the garment also felt a littler heavier) and less stretchy. Because of the seeming less stretchiness, the hoody felt tight around the arm pits (I'm 6'0", 165-170 lbs, athletic build). I'm right between tight fitting M and a loose fitting L. Difficult place to be in, but hopefully Patagonia will improve this garment to fit the folks in between.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Diggity Probably my favorite piece of outdoor clothing. Great with layers under or as a stand alone. Surprisingly warm, but of course can be vented. I teach in the outdoors and there is seldom a training or trip where I don't have this with me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just plain awesome After quite some time of wondering if the R1 lived up to its hype, I finally bought an R1 Pull-Over (the one without the hood) and found it most definitely lives up to the hype. Then I started eyeing the R1 Hoody—the "venerated alpine essential" according to Patagonia—and yes, it most definitely lives up to the hype as well. I took it on a two-week mountaineering trip to Alpamayo in Peru and wore it pretty much the whole time we were in the field. The hood is awesome. The snug fit allows it to fit under a climbing helmet and the cut coupled with the face coverage basically eliminates the need for a beanie or balaclava (both of those stayed at the bottom of my bag in base camp). The R1 is not super-warm but that is the beauty of it. It will surprise you what range of temperatures you can wear it in and thus it is my default lightweight midlayer. On nice days while moving/climbing in the mountains, I'm usually fine with just a temperature-appropriate Capilene baselayer and my R1. It's worth mentioning that the R1 Hoody was a staple among other climbers and guides in the Cordillera Blanca as well. Just buy one. You won't regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great design. I'll use it as a ski base layer. The hood will serve as a face protector on ski days

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I was looking for! I freaking love this thing. I was looking for an active piece that was a little longer so it wouldn't ride up when I was using a hip belt. This thing hits all the marks. Warm, breathable, great quality fleece with a bit longer cut in the torso. The hood makes it a great sleeping layer on the colder nights too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gear not clothinrg I now have 2 of these in the gear stash, as they are vital to my comfort and warmth. I live in Alaska, and fish in the winter regularly. This piece of gear is always on. It breathes, it insulates, and it looks good. Great job again patagonia

Rated 5 out of 5 by from snug and sexy The R1 is my favorite sweatshirt of all time. Its versatility is unmatched. I have worn it as a mid layer in below zero conditions elk hunting in the Wilderness as well as a stylish outer layer for date night. I love the slim fit, the hood is useful and not blown off when windy and the zippers are solid. My only complaint is I prefer the design of the previous model with separate polyester panels sewn into arms and bottom torso. Regardless, 5 stars.
