Learn More Close
After more than 15 years of cranking, our R1® fabric is still the gold standard for alpine efficiency. Its high/low grid interior (Polartec® Power Grid™ polyester) is key to the hoody’s versatility, and the highly refined fabric—the lightest and most breathable iteration ever—remains exclusive to Patagonia. It stretches, traps heat and compresses to practically nothing, with the pared-down but versatile features climbers and backcountry skiers need: a snug-fitting balaclava-style hood; a minimalist, deep-venting front zipper with a soft zipper garage that keeps your chin comfy; and a variable conditions cuff with discreet on-seam thumb holes and a spiral-stitch construction so you can push up the sleeves with no ensuing forearm pump. With off-shoulder seams for pack-wearing comfort, a long torso for layering under a harness, an exterior chest pocket and Polygiene® permanent odor control.

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The real deal Just finished up the first 110 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail. Southern California was hit by several record setting storms and I was right in the middle of them. High desert and desert mountains. Every weather condition you can imagine. Hot, cold, water, no water, then record rain, snow and very cold. Tenting, cowboy camping, two nights blown off the trail by a storm in an outhouse at Cibbets Flats. I lived in this garment day and night...and it performed for 14 days straight. Temps from 20-90F. I really liked the length for extra body warmth and the zip for venting my body and th hood for protecting my face in a cold blow. A big plus of the straight zip for the hood is a comfortable platform around the face to sleep on. A little bit of everything got stuffed into the upper pocket. Finally the thumb cuffs...brilliant with hiking poles or setting up camp in the cold where gloves won't work. Don't need them, fold them back. This is a real deal technical piece. It's not for posers. It's tough as nails and saved me many times over. The whole design layers well and plays nice with different hats and other hoods. Thanks Patagonia.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from R1 Hoody Rocks Dewy Point Presidents Weekend Bought the R1 Hoody for three nights in Presidents weekend to Deeey Point Yosemite 8'000' 27f. It was the right choice. Toasty warm and my now favorite go to layer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great but Too Long I bought the R1 hoody about a month ago and it is a great piece for both backcountry and resort skiing. The tight fitting hood is great for winter activities and fits well either over a hat or under a helmet. The high zipper up to the nose is very helpful in cold, wintry conditions as well. My only complaint is that Patagonia made the torso length way too long such that this piece fits like a dress if I don't have it tucked in. I'm 5'-10" and bought a size medium. I tried on a small in the non hooded version of the R1 and it was too tight and restrictive so I don't think the torso length issue is due to me buying the wrong size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super versatile It's a great skiing mid-layer and I've worn it on every winter run since I bought it. I love its breathability on the move and how it holds the warmth when the movement stops

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best piece of outdoor gear I own! I had been looking for a multi-functional midlayer for quite some time, mostly for backpacking and climbing, but also for all around outdoor use. I was initially somewhat hesitant to spend this much on a single piece of clothing, but I can now say after two years of use, it is the single best piece of clothing or gear I have ever owned! The quality is fantastic - I have used this in all of my outdoor activities at one point or another and put it though some tough use, but it still is in great shape. I've used this on: countless day hikes; multi-day backpacking trips in the White Mountains of NH, in temperatures from 50s to the teens; while fly fishing on chilly streams; rock climbing in the early spring/late autumn; as my go-to long sleeve top on runs; as just an incredibly comfortable top to wear around town. It is an incredibly versatile top in a great weight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect. I was hesitant to purchase the R1 based on some of the reviews but the fit and quality far exceeded my expectations. I'm tempted to buy two just to have an extra when this one wears out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Piece of junk - Old one were so much better I had the old R1 hoody for around 3 years and it were the best hoody I ever owned, literally perfect. I were so disappointed when I got this version that I decided to get a account here and give it a review. How could something so good devolve to something so bad? The form and fabric are ok, but the zipper!!! The unique thing that i loved with the hoody were the side zipper, so I could hike in the cold Swedish weather without haveing a dumb zipper in my mouth. I even tried to find the old one on eBay and other aftermarket places without any luck. So i am forced to move on tho other brands, hoping that Patagonia will see their mistake and make side zippers again in the future. So if Patagonia reads this, please make a side zipper version of the new hoody!!!
