Learn More Close
After more than 15 years of cranking, our R1® fabric is still the gold standard for alpine efficiency. Its high/low grid interior (Polartec® Power Grid™ polyester) is key to the hoody’s versatility, and the highly refined fabric—the lightest and most breathable iteration ever—remains exclusive to Patagonia. It stretches, traps heat and compresses to practically nothing, with the pared-down but versatile features that climbers and backcountry skiers need: a snug-fitting balaclava-style hood; a minimalist, deep-venting front zipper with a soft zipper garage that keeps your chin comfy; and a variable-conditions cuff with discreet on-seam thumb holes and a spiral-stitch construction so you can push up the sleeves with no ensuing forearm pump. With off-shoulder seams for pack-wearing comfort, a long torso for layering under a harness, an exterior chest pocket and Polygiene® permanent odor control.
  • Exclusive to Patagonia, this Polartec® Power Grid™ fabric with Polygiene® permanent odor control is light and breathable with outstanding stretch and durability
  • Snug-fitting, balaclava-style hood fits comfortably under a helmet strap; center-front slim zip with a soft kissing-welt zipper garage at chin for next-to-skin comfort
  • Raglan sleeves for increased mobility and off-shoulder seaming for comfort under a pack
  • Pullover silhouette has deep center-front zipper for quick venting
  • One left-chest pocket has slim zip install, zipper garage and mesh pocket bag
  • Sleeves have discreet on-seam thumb holes for wrist coverage in cold conditions

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Men's R1® Hoody is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I was looking for! I freaking love this thing. I was looking for an active piece that was a little longer so it wouldn't ride up when I was using a hip belt. This thing hits all the marks. Warm, breathable, great quality fleece with a bit longer cut in the torso. The hood makes it a great sleeping layer on the colder nights too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gear not clothinrg I now have 2 of these in the gear stash, as they are vital to my comfort and warmth. I live in Alaska, and fish in the winter regularly. This piece of gear is always on. It breathes, it insulates, and it looks good. Great job again patagonia

Rated 5 out of 5 by from snug and sexy The R1 is my favorite sweatshirt of all time. Its versatility is unmatched. I have worn it as a mid layer in below zero conditions elk hunting in the Wilderness as well as a stylish outer layer for date night. I love the slim fit, the hood is useful and not blown off when windy and the zippers are solid. My only complaint is I prefer the design of the previous model with separate polyester panels sewn into arms and bottom torso. Regardless, 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from R1 forever This is my second R1 hoody, not that there was anything wrong with the first, but I just like having different color options. If I can have one for each day of the week I would. For me I just find they keep me at the most optimal temperature within reason. I am a ninja by night so the half face zip mask also totally works for me ;)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not quite the R1 of old that I love but still good I bought this to replace my old abused and battered R1 that has lasted about 7 years (the zipper finally gave out and it's full of holes - worn a LOT). But was a tad disappointed to find the design has changed quite a bit. Some of the key features of the original have gone AWOL. Namely the diagonal zip, stretchy cuffs with asymmetric stitching so you can push them up, and the thinner fabric at the wrists). The arms are quite a bit tighter (too tight to push up to regulate heat - and I have fairly skinny arms), and the fabric at the thumb loop is quite bulky, annoying when biking. Also the differential fabric is gone which made it easy to stuff into pants etc. and stretchy on the forearms. Still a great bit of kit, just not exactly what I was expecting (due to video still live on site showing the old version).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hood meant for skiing, not running or everyday use 4 stars because the R1 material is fantastic, snug, great fit. However: know that the hood is not a regular hood, that you would find on a hoodie or typical jacket. It appears to be designed for skiing, to only go under a helmet. I guess the description gets at this, but I wanted a warm R1 hoody for going running, and didn't realize this product couldn't also be used for running. Wearing the hood by itself (not under a helmet) makes you look very strange. It's skin-tight, and has extra material that sticks up and looks like cat ears. I love the R1 products but wanted to post this to help others avoid this error.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The real deal Just finished up the first 110 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail. Southern California was hit by several record setting storms and I was right in the middle of them. High desert and desert mountains. Every weather condition you can imagine. Hot, cold, water, no water, then record rain, snow and very cold. Tenting, cowboy camping, two nights blown off the trail by a storm in an outhouse at Cibbets Flats. I lived in this garment day and night...and it performed for 14 days straight. Temps from 20-90F. I really liked the length for extra body warmth and the zip for venting my body and th hood for protecting my face in a cold blow. A big plus of the straight zip for the hood is a comfortable platform around the face to sleep on. A little bit of everything got stuffed into the upper pocket. Finally the thumb cuffs...brilliant with hiking poles or setting up camp in the cold where gloves won't work. Don't need them, fold them back. This is a real deal technical piece. It's not for posers. It's tough as nails and saved me many times over. The whole design layers well and plays nice with different hats and other hoods. Thanks Patagonia.
