On a 21-day canoe trip down the Nahanni River, every piece of gear has to pull its weight every day. The R2® Jacket is an easy choice. For northern latitudes, frigid starts and cold weather, the highly refined construction and fabric of this Regulator® fleece traps heat and breathes freely to keep you warm and comfortable across a wide range of conditions. The main body relies on high-loft Polartec® Thermal Pro® recycled polyester fabric, which is superlight, wicking, compressible, stretchy and soft. R1® Polartec Power Grid™ high/low grid panels wrap each cuff, and run along the underside of the arms and down the sides to improve fit, mobility and comfort range. The cuff’s spiral-seam construction won’t constrict your forearms when you push up the sleeves; the softly lined inner collar and kissing-welt zipper garage go easy on the neck and chin; sonic/stitch seam construction on all zippers reduces bulk; offset shoulder seams stay clear of pack straps; zippers close the external pockets (one chest and two handwarmers, above harness line), while the handwarmers’ pocket bags double as stealthy internal mesh drop-in pockets.
  • Exceptionally warm, directionally knit Polartec® Thermal Pro® fabric is breathable, compressible, wicks moisture and dries quickly
  • Side panels, sleeves and cuffs feature R1® Polartec® Power Grid™ for improved fit and breathability
  • Technical fit, underarm gussets and raglan sleeves for increased mobility and comfort under outerwear and packs
  • All zippers have Sonic/Stitch seam construction to reduce bulk and improve suppleness; soft kissing-welt zipper garage at chin for next-to-skin comfort
  • Spiral-seam construction at cuff allows sleeves to push up easily without constricting forearms
  • One left-chest pocket and two high handwarmer pockets have slim zip installs, clean-finished zipper garages, and are harness- and pack-compatible; two interior drop-in mesh pockets
  • Body: 6.1-oz Polartec® Thermal Pro® 97% polyester (63% recycled)/3% spandex. Side panels and cuffs: 6.3-oz Polartec® Power Grid™ 93% recycled polyester/7% spandex. Fabric is bluesign® approved

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Men's R2® Jacket is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 42.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Small in shoulders Unfortunately I had to return the jacket. As other reviewers said it does run tight through the shoulders. He couldn't reach out in front of him. I ordered a Medium for a 5'7" 140lb 19yr old runner. He thought the large would be too baggy in the body.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best technical mid layer out there This jacket is a phenomenal midlayer piece. A midlayer should be something that breathes exceptionally well which fleece in general does and what Regulator fleece does very well. So that means when the wind blows you will feel it. If you are too cool you simply throw on a shell. That gives you the flexibility to have just the R2 on when you are doing highly aerobic activities in cold conditions. Put the shell on when you hit treeline. For those complaining about the fit, you should pay attention to the fit guidelines. It says "Slim Fit". This is because it is intended to be a layering piece that fits under your shell.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Tight in arms and pitts This is my 3rd R2 and this one did not fit, my first two different generations are mediums, this one medium also, but it did not fit, sent it back already, thanks for the Iron Clad Reputation.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed I am a Patagonia fan and own so many of their products. However, this R2 just not for me. I bought R2 in men and woman sizes. Sleeves are way two long and body runs two slim. I bought two R3 in past years and they are fine. I hope they bring old R3 back (don't like the current R3).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from R2 Excellent product as always from Patagonia Never disappointed with their gear

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Still great quality, but runs small in shoulders. Like others have mentioned, the cut in the shoulders has become very tight and the fabric thickness has decreased by about a third. The area where the jacket is tight is right at the seams on the shoulder... limiting its ability to stretch. This is compared with the same-size 2015 R2 Jacket, which has got to be my favorite anything to wear. Oddly, while this 'medium' was too small, the 'small' sweatshirt I ordered fit perfectly. The overall quality of the jacket remains fantastic and I recommend it to anyone that is not overly muscular.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Maybe my favorite Patagonia clothing The R2 is pretty much my favorite Patagonia piece. It's warm, breathable, looks good, functional, etc. Which makes it very versatile. I've had many versions of this fleece. This version seems pretty good. The pockets and zips are good. They removed the thumb hole from a year or so ago, which is probably okay. The sleeves are still long enough to kind of pull over your hands some if you want though. I'm not sure if I like as much R1 at the ends of the sleeves. It's functional but my hands/wrists seem to get a bit cool for just wearing around for a warm jacket at work. It's probably fine under a shell. The other weird thing is the neck. The R1 is sort of loose from the outer R2. It seems a bit weird but I guess it still works. Seems like it might bunch up or something. Otherwise, it's great!
