Our neoprene-free Yulex® wetsuits are made of 85% natural rubber/15% synthetic rubber by polymer content. Replacing a petroleum-based material with a plant-based one, they offer the same warmth and performance attributes as conventional stretch neoprene while reducing CO2 emissions by up to ~80% in the manufacturing process. Derived from sources that are Forest Stewardship Council® certified by the Rainforest Alliance, we blend the natural rubber with chlorine-free synthetic rubber to increase ozone- and UV-resistance and meet our rigorous standards for strength, stretch and durability. With an anatomical, motion-focused design that maximizes comfort and flexibility while minimizing weight, the R3® Yulex® Front-Zip Full Suit is 4.5mm in the torso and thighs, lined with high-stretch, fast-drying 51% recycled polyester/44% polyester/5% spandex inverted microgrid; 3.5mm in the arms and legs, lined with high-stretch, fast-drying 100% recycled polyester jersey; the face fabric is 85% recycled polyester/15% spandex. The floating front-zip features a corrosion-proof zipper and asymmetrical flap for better seal; the Salmi® zipper is fully replaceable to extend the suit’s lifespan. Supratex kneepads and ankle cuffs provide excellent abrasion resistance and increased durability. 100% external seam sealing; all seams are triple glued and internally taped. Easy-access key loop included. Suggested water temperatures: 48–55° F/9–13° C.

Note

We stand behind everything we make, including our wetsuits. But wetsuits require care if they are going to perform and wear the way they were intended. Patagonia is not responsible for wetsuits that are abused or show normal wear and tear over time. Scratches and fading are inevitable, as are tears from the occasional close call with a fin. Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Biorubber

When we started making wetsuits, we quickly identified neoprene as a material that needed improvements to lessen its environment impact. So we met with the folks from Yulex who wanted to leverage the unique properties of the guayule plant, a hearty desert shrub native to the southwestern United States. Thus began a collaborative long-term project to develop a wetsuit material from guayule rubber.

Compared to traditional neoprene made from petroleum (or limestone), guayule rubber is a renewable resource that provides improved elasticity and softness and can be replaced faster than the product wears out. The agriculture is low-impact and the extraction and processing uses little energy and few chemicals.

Overall, from the crops to the rubber manufacturing, Yulex® guayule rubber has a lower environmental impact than the polychloroprene that it replaces.

Men's R3 Yulex Fz Full Suit is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Runs insanely small I am 5'10" 185 - ordered an XL... I could hardly get the suit on. Couldn't breath when it was on. The construction of the suit is great - the fit is just way off.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Needs work I've had the suit for maybe 6 months. I appreciate what Patagonia is trying to do with the Yulex rubber but you guys blew it on this one. Just like many of the other reviews have stated - getting into the suit is difficult, getting out of it is near impossible. I had a pre-yulex suit from Patagonia and loved it. I'm back wearing that one now. It was a lot of money to spend on a suit that is basically unwearable. I expect better from Patagonia.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from JJ WAS THE BEST! I brought my wetsuit into your Santa Monica retail store for repair - was given a less expensive replacement instead. JJ took care of the difference with instore credit - what GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! As always, I will continue to buy ONLY Patagonia wetsuits, as my job as a surf instructor and competitive surfer for my college keeps me in a wetsuit every day!!! Patagonia is the best and most professional brand I've bought - and the people there are the BEST !!! Thank You so much!!! Jack Rowan/ VERY HAPPY PATAGONIA CUSTOMER

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A step in the right direction.... I've had my suit for about 6 months and it's the warmest 3 Mil I have owned. I've worn it from cold Santa Cruz to warmer Ventura County. Finish is true to Patagonia quality, keeps you dry and built well. The suit is comfortable in the water and allows me to paddle well. The problem is taking it off; I have worn the suit over 30 times, and it is still impossible to get out of. I'm an average surfer build; 5'11", 165lbs. The first 10 times I used it, I had to have my friends help me get out of it. Still after about 30 uses, it takes me about 5 minutes to get out of (better then the 10 minutes it took when new) If you have a bad shoulder I guarantee you would be dislocating it every time trying to get the suit off. It has stretched a bit since I bought it but not enough to make getting out much easier. Hats off to Patagonia to pushing new technology and environmentally friendly suits, but getting this thing off is just too painful! Everyone I have talked to in the water has had the same issue, these suits are just too difficult to take off. Patagonia this front entry suit needs some more work.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great suit....faulty zipper design I'm the Christofish1 that reviewed the frontzip hooded R3 about 6 months ago...the one I couldnt get out of without bodily harm. As mentioned Patagonia traded that in for me for a backzip R3. This is a great suit, albeit without a built in hood...but no worries. I bought a separate one. One big big issue though... the zipper was coming down on me while I was out surfing (i'm skinny so don't worry that it was a middle age man gut issue). The zipper had neither "teeth" to stop the slider from coming down nor did it have a velcro flap to keep the zipper up. I called Ventura and they said, yep, we've heard about this problem. Sent it down and they added a velcro stripthat I can flap over to hold the zipper up. I'm surprised the Malloy Bros and the other testers didn't catch this basic issue. Zippers with catches / teeth have been standard since the 70s. So some sloppy design and on the back of a bad R3 frontzip experience. Nevertheless I am trying to stick with Patagonia. Even if when they mess up at least they try to fix the problem.
