The razor-sharp reefs of Java were at the outer limits of surfing in the ‘70s, and they still test the most hardened barrel hunters today. Made from durable, fast-drying and superlight 2.8-oz 100% recycled polyester with glued seams, the Stretch Hydro Planings are the lightest and highest-performing board shorts in our line. With the camouflage colorway featuring a pattern inspired by Gerry Lopez Surfboards, they have 50+ UPF sun protection, a DWR (durable water repellent) coating and highly functional 2-way mechanical stretch that offers maximum flexibility in top-to-bottom surf. A low-drag waistband and slim profile through the thigh and leg provide elevated functionality; the flat-lying gasket fly is optimized for comfort while paddling; a bartacked ladderlock drawstring closure adds long-lasting durability and keeps the shorts secure. The self-draining pocket on the right thigh has a noncorroding, recyclable plastic zipper with added zipper pull for ease of use. Outseam is 19".

Water Resistant

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Men's Hydro Planing Stretch Board Shorts - is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from An extra pair The Hydro Planing short is a marvel of light weight and quick drying. I've tried other brands' techno shorts. Some are nice, all seem heavier. I'm not persuaded that the elaborate, heavier waistbands espoused by others are really such a big deal. Certainly the Hydro Planing fits in with an older video ad by one of the Malloy brothers explaining Light & Variables as "Speedos for people who don't wear Speedos." Yes. Great for swimming/bodysurfing. Also for wearing under pants if you hope to sneak in a bit of beach time. No bulk. Patagonia's deceptive simplicity, embracing bonded/welded construction seems to set the standard. I continue to like Patagonia's sewn, non-stretchy board shorts, which feel a bit more sturdy and are more than flexible enough. Sizes are consistent with most other brands, running slightly smaller than some.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Incredible! Got these trunks for the length and lightweight features. Only changed to be made would be the seams on the inside which can cause a bit of rash ! Besides that they are a delight!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Crazy shorts! Needed some new boardies and these looked cool so I thought I'd try em out. Wow, the material dries so fast in the sun, crazy fast. All the seams are practically non existent. There's no thread to chaff your skin. I do wonder how the bonding agent will hold up over the years but only time will tell. Lastly the fit is great, not to loose and not to tight, just the right amount of material. I put size M on my review but I'm 6'3 with an athletic build and the 32's were right on the money. My new "go to" boardies!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In Defense Of Great Gear I almost never write these things, but was doing some online daydreaming and came across a review for the 19" Hydro Planing Board Shorts titled, "Terrible Shorts," which provided a grossly unfair representation about what you get with these bad boys. So I felt obliged. I've been wearing these shorts for about year; I own three pairs. They're my go to for everything from weekend fishing/paddling trips on the OBX to Saturday pool parties in the City. They're pricey, sure. But you absolutely get what you pay for. They look and feel light as a feather, dry in minutes, and are so comfortable that after charging barrels in them all day, you may even opt to go to bed in them. True story. Like many who shop the Patagonia brand, I'm in constant pursuit of Great Gear; these fit the bill. You will not be disappointed. One point on sizing: These do technically fit true to size, but they're a stretch fabric, so to keep them on your bum while you're crushing shore break, highly recommend sizing down one size, especially if you're on the fence. I'm 6'2" about 190lbs; pretty consistently a size 34 pants and wear a 33 in these.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Shorts I was so disappointed in the Stretch Planing Board Shorts. So poorly made and constructed. I've been wearing Patagonia for 42 hrs. And the quality has waned tremendously. I purchased 2 tees and 3 other shorts in this order and they were all very poor in quality. Not as good as past Patagonia products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best performance surfing boardshorts yet! Patagonia has nailed it with the stretch hydro planning 19" boardshorts this year. I've long been an advocate of the minimalist wavefarer and still love those, but the hydro planning trunks are hands down the best performing trunks that they've made in my opinion. No rash, a little stretch, not too long, more of a modern silhouette and a waistband that is more ergonomic than the wavefarer. I've never been a fan of stretchy boardshorts because they stick to your leg, causing rash during long sessions and hot days on the beach, but with the 2-way stretch (rather than 4-way, which is useless) they've used, these feel light, limber and don't rash. They're perfect for the performance-minded surfer and surfing in hotter temperatures during long sessions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All purpose best shorts. I never thought I'd drop this much for a pair of shorts, but I'm ordering two more pairs right now. These are the lightest shorts I own (workout shorts included) and they dry faster than anything I've ever seen. They don't impede your movement from squats, to swimming, and everything in between. Length isn't an issue at all. In fact, you barely notice you have these shorts on at all.
