Named for the small Northern California town where you can tuck away and rediscover yourself on the rugged Lost Coast. Our largest top-loading backpack, the Petrolia has a zippered-entry design for easy access to your gear and enough room inside to hold all the goods for a full day on the trail. A dedicated side-access laptop pocket, raised above the bottom of the pack to protect your electronics, allows you to keep your 15" or smaller machine inside the pack as you pass through security; it also doubles as a hydration pocket when you’re traversing open country. The large main compartment holds bulkier items like a harness, shoes and a rain shell and has an internal organizational panel to ferry your small essentials securely. A zippered stash pocket on the lid keeps a map or phone within reach, and two stretch-woven side pockets carry water bottles or your hat and gloves. Breathable airflow mesh shoulder straps and back panel provide cool, all-day comfort under heavy loads. A front stretch-mesh pocket expands to hold a sweater or a damp towel after your afternoon of skinny-dipping in Tuolumne. Made from 450-denier recycled polyester plain weave, with a 450-denier recycled polyester ripstop bottom. The lining is 200-denier 100% polyester. All fabrics have a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

Water Resistant

DWR
(durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good backpack for everyday use I bought this backpack about a month ago as a gift. The person LOVES the pack but on their second day of use the front clasp that holds the front pouch to the pack broke off. They still use the front pocket but wish it would have held up at least a few weeks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite bag This is my favorite and most versatile backpack I've ever owned. I use this bag to haul textbooks in the week and basically everything else whenever. The front mesh compartment is the best feature this pack has, wet gear in the summer, extra layers in the winter fit in there great. The only way problem with the bag and other backpacks designed by patagonia is that both the sternum straps fell off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great travel and commute backpack A new addition to my collect. This backpack is perfect! I needed something that was light and sturdy for all of my adventures and the top loading feature is ideal to quickly grab what I need.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this backpack I love this backpack true it won't quite fit a 15-inch laptop but just put the laptop in the back pack. It has a minimalistic clean design on the outside but inside it is great. lots of organization.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly designed, executed & described Contrary to the description, the side access laptop compartment doesn't come close to accommodating a 15" laptop, because the entry zipper is only about 14.5" long (I measured it twice, which Patagonia might consider doing too). The latch on the back stretch compartment is about the worst I've seen in 40(!) yrs of carrying packs. Absolute hassle to unlatch. It relies on cheesy thin shock cord that's guaranteed not to last long. A simple small buckle would have done nicely, but the little hook thing is a total mess. Padding on shoulder harness is too short, too. Most pack makers do better. One upside is that does include a variety of internal pockets that I'd never use. It's going back. Which is a hassle. Wish it had been described correctly (e.g. that zipper opening to supposed laptop compartment is well under 15" long)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great pockets; well designed. We bought this on sale for my son's school back pack. It works well as a back pack. All of the compartments are well sized and well placed. However, one disappointing issue is that the chest buckle keeps falling off of the shoulder strap. It is not really secured to the shoulder strap well at all. We keep putting it back on, and it just falls off again.
