Modern-day fly fishing, like much in life, has become exceedingly complex, with high-tech gear, a confusing array of flies and terminal tackle, accompanied by high-priced fishing guides. This book reveals that the best way to catch trout is simply, with a rod and a fly and not much else. The wisdom in this book comes from a simpler time, when the premise was: the more you know, the less you need. It teaches the reader how to discover where the fish are, at what depth, and what they are feeding on. Then it describes the techniques needed to present a fly at that depth, make it look lifelike, and hook the fish. With chapters on wet flies, nymphs, and dry flies, its authors employ both the tenkara rod as well as regular fly fishing gear to cover all the bases. With paintings by renowned fish artist James Prosek, as well as inspiring photographs and stories throughout, Simple Fly Fishing reveals the secrets and the soul of this captivating sport. Foreword by American landscape artist and fly fisherman Russell Chatham.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Interested in getting hooks in the water? I'm the opposite type of person from the guy who wrote, at the time I'm writing this, the only other review. I am not an experienced fisherman in any capacity. I'm probably like a lot of other people out there and haven't touched a fishing pole since the time my grandfather used to take me out when I was a young child. I think more and more there's been a real renewed interest in people, especially younger people, getting outdoors and avoiding the 'silent desperation' induced by staring at pages full of narcissism on social media websites. I'm being a little dramatic, but I'm not exactly kidding either. If you're anything like myself and you've been looking for more reason to find a connection outside instead of staring at screens all day then give Tenkara a shot. The philosophy with Tenkara takes the fear out getting into fly fishing by reducing it down to simple and easy to understand methods. This book in particular is aimed at people who are taking interest in fishing as beginners. It has a wealth of good information, good stories, and some really nice photographs as well. Be prepared for all your friends to say, ' fly fishing... isn't that only for old people.' Disregard this. It's a myth. If you have a passing interest at all pick this book up and decide your level of involvement after having read it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why we fish, why we tenkara I'm an experienced fly fisherman, ex-guide, and I am getting into tenkara fishing. Yvan (et al)'s book is a wonderfully useful overview of what fly fishing, at its heart, is all about. For those of us who are ready to simplify, the book makes a strong case for tenkara's "less is more" -- more satisfying, more connected, more fun. It's good to remember that sometimes we have to work at simplicity -- tenkara is "like" fly fishing, but it helps to have a beginner's mind, and the book honors that. Clear descriptions, effective illustrations and photos, solid information alongside stories and meditations. It treats us with the respect due the beginner in all of us. (Like the Bhutanese monk's fly selection, p. 41.)
