With a forecast of 8 to 12 inches of new, a map of the Elk Mountain Range hut system and a loaded SnowDrifter backpack, you’ve opened the doors to some serious shred. Built for multiday and hut-to-hut tours in the backcountry, this roomy, top-loading pack comfortably hauls everything you need to move efficiently through changing landscapes. It has a dedicated compartment for snow safety tools with individual sleeves and pockets for your probe, shovel, snow saw and more. The top-loading design with a lid that opens fully provides easy access to the main compartment and allows you to overstuff the pack, thanks to an adjustable drawcord closure. You can also use a side-panel zipper to access the main compartment so you can get to all your gear without unloading the pack; lid has two stash pockets: one external and one internal. A top pocket secures easily misplaced items and a separate microfleece-lined pocket keeps your goggles handy and protected from sharp edges. The suspension system incorporates a lightweight, removable internal frame to comfortably carry heavy loads, as well as heat-venting, snow-sloughing mesh on the shoulder straps, back panel and padded waist belt for all-day carrying comfort. A stealthy internal thermos pocket keeps your hot beverages within easy reach. Front and side compression straps with locking cam buckles provide numerous carry options for your skis and boards. The top-mounted haul handle is reinforced and sized for gloves. Made from burly 420-denier Cordura® 100% nylon plain weave for puncture and abrasion resistance, with a tough 940-denier Cordura Ballistic 100% nylon base with polyurethane coating. Both fabrics have a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Snow Drifter - 40L is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Shovel pocket too small and other issues Pros: Beefy construction Comfortable Well designed ski and ice axe carry Slick removable top lid and straps Cons: Shovel pocket too tight. Ironically I have the same BD shovel and probe that are in the product photo and they barely fit. If the pack is full, it's a wrestling match to get them in and out. The shovel compartment needs some depth/volume. The pack tapers towards the top making the top access very narrow. If the goggle pocket is full, even more so. Lacks waist belt pocket and helmet carry. As mentioned above, the top entrance to the pack is so narrow it's difficult to put a helmet in there. Ultimately the poorly designed tool pocket and narrow cut to the top of the pack were deal breakers for me and I returned it. For casual users or those with smaller/flatter shovels the pack may work fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great pack Bought this pack for my girlfriend and it's great. Pack is well built with a good amount of space and nice compression for smaller loads. Only drawback is it does not have a helmet holder. I believe helmet holders are an essential part of a backcountry ski pack so you can bring a helmet, not wear it all the time and have a good way to carry it without putting it inside the pack

Rated 3 out of 5 by from great bag but the straps were slippery for me? I really liked the side pocket access as well as the extensibility of the volume of the bag, but I found the straps to feel a little wonky compared to my previous REI 45l and Osprey bags. I was wearing a puffy the majority of my trip so that definitely contributed, beyond that though I couldn't seem to get the fit comfortably.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from very utilitarian Ive had this pack for several months and have used it in a variety of situations... I purchased this pack to replace an Osprey Code 42 that was several years old. First the upside, the AVY pocket is well designed, and even with a full pack the handle, shovel and probe are easily accessible. there is also some extra room that i used to stow skins, and a small backcountry repair kit. I completed a single day, 10 mile ski tour and the pack was reasonably comfortable, the side zip allowed for easier access to items in the bottom of the pack. The downsides... it is a small 40l pack, and when i purchased it, i was planning to use it for overnight/hut style trips, but the pack is simply to small. Additionally, i found the tops shoulder straps affix to the pack very close to the middle, which was not an issue until the load adjusters need to be tightened or loosened, and I simply wasn't flexible enough to make the adjustment on my own (perhaps thats just me). suggestions for improvement.... 1 true 50l version would be great, an insulated sleeve in one of the shoulder straps to accomodate a drinking tube, zippered pockets on the hip belt. overall 4 stars, and for day trips this is a solid choice

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Traveling through national parks I felll in love with this backpack as soon as I started to use it. It's light, yet can carry all that you need. You can even remove the top and use as a fanny pack when doing your shopping for supplies. I traveled for 10 days for hiking and the pack carried all that I needed. The zipper on the side worked well for your water bottle too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome day touring bag Great bag for day trips, or if you work on your skis, or board. Easy to grab to zippers with gloves on, and get to the compartments. The only downfall of the bag is if you ski in a area with a deep snowpack, then your probe might not fit in the compartment designated for snow safety tools. I use a 320m probe, and have to put it in the main compartment of the bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Avalanche proof I wore this 40L pack, for the first time, on a backcountry trip in the Tobacco roots in Montana in late March. We were boot-packing up a couloir when our group set off an avalanche that took us on a 500 foot slide into a rock field. Not sure Patagonia tests for that kind of abuse, but the pack was up for the challenge. (My body not so much.) Skis stayed on the pack, there was no damage to the pack, and it stayed firmly in place during the slide, which I have to believe protected my spine from the rocks. My son's pack - not made by Patagonia - didn't fare so well (he was unscathed thankfully); it ripped open, and some straps and buckles broke. With the avalanche test out of the way, I'm looking forward to seeing what the SnowDrifter can do next season...in more mundane conditions .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome ski touring pack! We used the 40L snow drifter packs for a recent 8 day ski touring traverse of the White Clouds wilderness in Idaho. At 40L for a trip of this length we had to go pretty minimal and weren't sure they would be big enough, but Patagonia has built a SUPER versatile and really well thought out pack that worked perfectly. Tough materials and strong. Great pockets and gear loops. LOVE the ski loop and ice axe pocket. Expands quickly and easily for when you have to quickly stuff a tent or something bulky. The only thing I would change would be to make the snow tools outer pocket a bit larger as it's hard to get your shovel out if there's anything in the bag. A super, super nice pack. I love the Ascension pack, but for a big ski tour, the added durability of the Snow Drifter is perfect.
