Forget the Internet—the best surfing still goes to the people who are willing to set up camp and wait. A secure, fast-drying 5-panel hat designed for lightweight performance in water and wind, our Surf Duckbill Hat keeps the sun off when those first long interval lines start to show down south. Made of soft and durable 100% nylon with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish, it has a stiff foam brim that shields the eyes and holds its shape while still allowing clean duck-dives. The dark underbill reduces glare from the water. An adjustable chin strap keeps the hat in place in wind or bigger surf; it can be easily tucked away when not in use.

Water Resistant

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Surf Hat Excellent surf hat for sun protection. I owned an original version of this hat circa 2000. This is my second purchase of the new version. They are just as good as the original.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Hat A long, long time ago I owned a version of this hat but eventually lost it. Last month I purchased this again and found some awesome design changes: the old hat had a brim that was a little too low and could interfere with visibility when taking off on a wave. This newer version has a slightly higher brim that has eliminated that issue. Otherwise, I find this to be a mandatory piece of equipment when surfing in the sun (not mandatory in WA winters when it is grey). One suggestion I would make is to offer it in a lighter color but that's pretty nit-picky. Oh, one other thing: I had one wipe out where the hat was taken off of my head but the chin strap design is such that it remained on my neck and I did not lose it. The hat simply fell down my neck and I was stoked it was still there when I came up for air! Great product. Especially if you are fair-skinned and have been to the dermatologist a bunch and they are encouraging you to keep sun off of your face. Nice product Patagonia! Same photo I put up with the wet suit. In it I am wearing the hat. One of the only photos we got all week.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works very well I have used my first one of these water hats for about 10 sessions so far with excellent results. The hat adjusts in the back and under the chin for a custom fit. The adjustment under the chin may loosen when wet but can easily be tightened in the water. Stays in place when duck diving and provides just enough brim to ward-off the suns rays. I use this water hat for surf kayaking and bodyboarding and it allows you to look left and right to check the wave mid-ride without blocking periferal vision.
