UPF Fabric

Lacking fur, feathers or scales, we humans have to think up clever ways to protect ourselves from the sun. Products with the UPF designation provide built-in sun protection that won’t wear off.

To achieve sun protection, Patagonia takes a varied approach, depending on the degree of protection desired and the fabric used. Elements of the strategy can range from yarn selection to fabric construction to the use of special finishes (especially for light colors which generally provide less protection).

Women's Happy Hike Pants - Short is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comfortable and light Bought these pants recently for climbing outdoors and I'm pretty happy with them so far. They are light and stretchy, which is nice for having to do high feet or the splits in the middle of a climb, and the material quality is quite nice. However, these fit quite a bit baggier than I expected - I'm 5'4" and weigh around 140lbs, of a fairly athletic build and got them in a size 6 (originally got a size 8 but those were definitely too big). They're still a bit baggy around the waist and in the crotch, but I don't mind that too much since I can also layer them over some base layers if I'm climbing outdoors in colder temps.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not so happy hike pants I bought these pants five months ago. After just three months, the single line stitched seams started to come out on the bottoms of both back pockets rendering them useless. Now the seam on the lower bum is coming apart. I wear them 1-2 times per week. Also, they are a little long for me. I knew they probably would be when making my purchase decision. The idea of the draw strings to prevent walking on the pant cuff was one reason why I decided on the Happy Hike pant. However, when tightened, the pull strings are long so I step on those instead if I don't tuck them inside a sock or shoe. Things I do like about the pant: the deep front pockets and the zippered closures on two of the pockets. The fabric is great; lots of flexibility and breathable. So, overall, I like the idea of the pants, but am disappointed in the quality. I can sew them, but after 3-5 months of use don't feel I should *have* to.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice features, wrong fit for me Glad they're available in short but other than that, the fit was off for me, and I didn't like the side pockets. Waist was way too big relative to the hips and butt. The inner drawstring isn't a perfect or particularly comfortable solution when the waist is so big. Much prefer Patagonia's Quandary pants.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pants Stretchy enough and comfy, I can easily roll them up and cinch the bottoms when I need to keep insects out. Very happy. Quick drying too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite pants! These are the best pants I own. They are lightweight, durable, and look great. The pockets fit stuff, which is an added bonus. Also, they dry quickly, which makes traveling with them great because you can wash them in the shower and hang them up to dry overnight. This was the second pair I've bought, and I plan on buying more. Totally worth the money, and you can feel good that they are ethically sourced. Thanks, Patagonia!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WHAT HAPPENED TO THESE GREAT PANTS?! For years I have loved the fabulous fit and stretch of these beautiful pants. They were ideal to dress up or down, and were always a staple in my travel wardrobe. Recently Patagonia did away with the black so I waited until they brought them back. I noticed recently that the black was back and I ordered 2 pairs to restock my wardrobe. Boy was I disappointed when they arrived. All the pockets are different, and the front pockets now gape open at the sides creating a weird and unflattering silhouette. The back pockets that used to have a great unique shape are now standard squares. They've also added a string at the hem so that you can tighten it to shorten the pants to capris or other lengths. This causes the hem to look bulky now. Why would Patagonia take a perfect pant and ruin it with so many changes? I understand some folks might like these new "options" but introduce a new pant for this style instead of completely ruining an old favorite!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Comfortable but not perfect I bought these pants several months ago and while they are very comfortable and have great flexibility they are not perfect. The cords at the bottom that are used to tighten the pants are a bit annoying. They constantly come loose. It's a better investment to get pants with snaps if you're short like me!
