UPF Fabric

Lacking fur, feathers or scales, we humans have to think up clever ways to protect ourselves from the sun. Products with the UPF designation provide built-in sun protection that won’t wear off.

To achieve sun protection, Patagonia takes a varied approach, depending on the degree of protection desired and the fabric used. Elements of the strategy can range from yarn selection to fabric construction to the use of special finishes (especially for light colors which generally provide less protection).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FAVORITE PANT I bought these because I travel for work internationally and when I'm home I'm playing in the mountains. They're amazing for both. They fit well, are breathable, don't get dirty easily, clean up easily, keep you cool while protecting you from the sun and they look cool. I think these are the ultimate adventure pant. Thank you!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly comfortable I travel frequently and want to be comfortable on long flights, but I don't want to look like I am headed to a sleepover party... And these pants nailed it! Presentable & comfortable. I bought these online and was nervous about sizing since the "whats my size" feature suggested that I am dead smack in the middle of a Small and a Medium. I am 5'2" and 135lbs & chose the SMALL. It is perfect for me. If I weighed any less, I would have gone with an XS. I do typically wear a snugger fitting bottoms.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Favorite I'm 5'3", about 135#, and prefer my pants and leggings not to be super tight in the waist. I hesitantly purchased an XS based on other reviews, thinking I would regret it, but I love them! The legs conform to my own with just a little bit of room and the waist fits snugly but is stretchy so it doesn't feel like it's tight or squeezing. I think the S would've had more bag and been looser, which wasn't the look I was going for. They're super lightweight, and allow for tons of movement, which will be perfect for hiking. I'm so happy with these new pants!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for hiking & everyday wear! After searching far & wide for a new pair of hiking/travel pants I came across these. They were exactly what I had in mind but I was hesitant because I had never ordered pants from Patagonia before (only tops/coats). I used the website's size calculator which told me I would be a S but when I read the reviews, the general consensus was to size down. I took the reviewers' advice and ordered the XS and could not be happier! They fit perfectly and compliment my hips while still having a relaxed style. For reference I am 5'5" 125 lbs with athletic legs and the XS is perfect. I cannot wait to wear these on all of my upcoming trips!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE my Happy Hike Studio Pants!!! Just got the black Happy Hike Studio Pant in today! Read so many reviews and these pants seemed to meet my needs. the “street to hike” claim caught my attention. I was looking for a pant that would meet the following needs: 1) comfortable to travel in plane to Europe, 2) weather resistant, light weight, sun protective pant to hiking in the July summer heat of Italy but also roomy enough for a thin thermal layer for hiking the upper snow filled mountains of the Swiss Alps, 3) a pant that is thin, wrinkle free and would not take too much space in my backpack, and 4) a pant that would be nice enough to throw on a nice top and go out to dinner in! This pant has hit the mark on ALL accounts!!! Even though I just got them and havn’t tried them out yet, I can already tell they will be the pants I wear on the plan, the pants I will hike in both the summer heat of Italy and snow capped mountains of the Swiss alps, they will be ideal for packing for a single case backpack trip and will be easy to wash and quick to dry, and I will totally dress them up and go out for a nice dinner in them! BINGO! Now for sizing. After reading all the reviews I decided to go down a size. I am 5’6” and weigh 160 lbs. I am an athletic 160 build and do not consider myself thin nor fat. Most hiking pants from well named brands all fit much too tight for me both in the waist and thighs and have have yet to find one that is really comfortable for me. It’s been pretty discouraging really as I would be willing to pay the money for good quality and fit. I read some reports of the crotch sagging and the ankle length being too short so I will address all these topics. I normally wear a size 11/12 or large pant. I ordered a medium in the Happy Hike pant and it was perfect for me. The waist is slightly higher but not too high and the waist band super comfortable. The pants fit me perfect in both the butt and the thighs with enough room to wear over my thermals if needed but not too baggy. I like more of a tailored fit and the mediums fit me just this way. The front pockets are good and deep and do drape open just a bit like some have mentioned. I do with these pockets would have quality zippers. The back pockets sit a bit low but doesn’t bother me at all. an additional side leg zippered pocket would be nice if I could have design input for future ideas! The length of the pant could be a tad longer for me but it’s still okay considering its a cuffed ankle. When I pulled the legs up for that “shortened trendy” look they describe, the ankle cuffs are a bit too tight on my calves but I dont think tight enough to bother me. We will see about this. The material is soft and pliable and the quality we expect with Patagonia brand. I will be ordering the grey pant to add to my black ones. Design note for the grey pant...i really would prefer that the waist band and cuff be solid grey like the pant and not that heather fabric. To me, it draws the eye and chops up the nice flow the pants should have. But I know I am going to like the pants so much and get great use from them, that I’ll not worry about that. It looks like possibly you used to have the solid grey as many of your advertisements show it this way. I would choose that if you had it instead of the heather waste band and ankle cuffs. So......if you are not thin and have a more athletic build and have been frustrated with the fit of the traditional hiking pants, then I believe you will be very happy with the Happy Hike Studio Pant!!!! Happy hiking!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Had issues with sizing but LOVE these pants Finally! After ordering 3 different sizes (M, S, XS) I have a pair that fit! I had to really order down in these pants in order to get the crotch to sit where it should and the waistband to actually fit my waist. I'm 5'4" 130lbs and ended up with a size XS. {I'm typically a S} Regardless, I love these pants. They are a wonderful change from yoga pants / tights. They have a nice stretch to them but are still a little loose. They are not see-through and don't show sweat. I love the gathered ankles. The one thing I will say is that I really liked the looser fit through the legs in the size small, but the waist was huge and it looked like I had a drop-crotch. I'm wondering if with pants like this it would be better to size them numerically to get more diversity rather than XS-XL? It could also be helpful to show some models who are shorter than 5' 9" wearing them to help with fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these pants I just got these pants in the mail and I already love them. I am 130lbs and 5’3”. I got a size small and they fit perfect. I sized down based on the other reviews. The material has some stretch to it, which I wasn’t expecting. I like this feature though because the pants won’t stretch out. they fit higher on the waist but not too high. They are light weight which I also like. Very pleased with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Choice This pant is perfect. I just orders a second pair. As I age and put on weight, 50's, 5'5", & 162 lbs., it's very hard to find pants that I like and not be embarrassed about the size. The large in this pant fits great and is still roomy.
