Anytime storm clouds build and precip falls, whether wet snow or pouring rain, our Piolet Jacket remains unfazed. It protects, moves and breathes with a supple 2-layer polyester waterproof/breathable and windproof GORE-TEX® fabric that has a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. The hanging liner is made of a brushed and wicking mesh in the body, with smooth-layering taffeta in the sleeves; and the drop-collar design on the helmet-compatible, 2-way-adjustable hood provides exceptional coverage and visibility. Finer details include minimal-welt exterior and interior storm flaps on the center-front zipper; extremely low-bulk, watertight, coated pit zips; and three external pockets (the jacket also has an internal zippered security pocket). With low-profile contoured cuff closures and full-reach gusseted underarm panels for mobility.

Water Resistant

(durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

The construction of 2-Layer GORE-TEX® Products is unique. A GORE-TEX® membrane is bonded to an outer material, then combined with a free-flowing lining. The benefit: a soft, lightweight garment that keeps you dry and lets you move freely.

The GORE-TEX® membrane has 9 billion pores per square inch, with each pore 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet. These tiny holes are too small for water and wind to pass through from the outside. But these same pores are large enough for moisture vapor to pass through, so your body's perspiration is able to escape and you won’t feel clammy or uncomfortable inside your jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I wanted I bought this a month ago and finally took it skiing in CO this weekend. I wore it over just a light longsleeve baselayer and my new NanoAir vest in 25 degrees F and was warm skiing. The pit vents dump heat quickly and the pockets were easily accessible with my ski pack on. This was the first time I was able to comfortably wear my hood while skiing. It fit well over my helmet and the collar design allowed for full head/neck mobility without reducing visibility. I bought a large so it would fit over my down puffy in extreme temps and it doesn't look too big on it's own. I'm 5'9", 150lb and wear sm-med form fitting tops from Patagonia for reference. I wear mitten-style gloves and my only quip is that the zipper tabs are hard to grasp, I'll be adding extra bulk to them with some duct tape.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the separate collar and hood system Lightweight and comfortable this jacket is no wimp. Good quantity functional goretex shell and it looks good on! I have worn it out on long days in the woods with temps below 15 Fahrenheit. Comfortable top layer and true to size.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great ski shell jacket I got this as a hard shell to ski in.I love it so far! I went a size up to make sure i can fit as many layers as i need/want. I have skied in some pretty chilly conditions and the jacked had performed wonderfully, keeping me safe from wind and snow i like the high neck that when zipped all the way up covers my chin and mouth. The hood fits a little short over a ski helmet but i suppose that's expected since this is not advertised as a ski jacket. The red color is beautiful and I've received lots of compliments on it. My main complaint are the zippers. They tend to get stuck and i suspect they will eventually rip. What does Patagonia have against regular heavy duty YKK zippers and why do they insist on using flimsy ones? Otherwise, this jacket is all i hoped it would be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't wait to test it out in Patagonia! I'm so excited to use this coat on my trip to Torres del Paine next month. It's already been tested against the Montana snow storms after Christmas. I'm grateful to have a water and wind proof resistant coat for the elements!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Ski Jacket!!! Bought this in November for the ski season. I was debating between this one and the PowSlayer Jacket, but went for the Piolet because I'm a college student and the price matters! My only concern was the Piolet didn't have a powder skirt, but reviews said it was a great ski jacket so I decided to try it. It's Gore-Tex, which is a must in WA state! Works perfectly, I haven't been wet yet. My worries about the lack of powder skirt were unneccessary. First day out I took a massive tumble down the slopes covered in knee-high powder (it was hilarious my friend told me) but came up dry and empty! My goggles had more snow inside than my jacket. Pit zips are amazing! Work well and have good room in the armpit, my arms don't feel restricted at all, even when I'm using the jacket for outdoor work not just skiing. I am 5'6 on the smaller chest size, but with big hips. Bought a L, fit's perfectly around my hips, snug enough to keep snow out but loose enough to not ride up and allow movement. Chest ares is too big for me, but I'm skiing so it doesn't bother me too much. Also good for layering! Very quiet fabric, I was amazed at how soft and flexible it is! Overall, an amazing product!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Declining quality, newer clothing runs smaller I have had a Piolet jacket for 3 to 4 years. I like it so much, I ordered another one. Sadly, the quality of my recent purchase is greatly decreased. I wear a Pategonia large but bought my an XL so I could layer and still have room. Unfortunately, the new jacket, also an XL, was tight. The new version measures 2.5" smaller across the shoulder blades, and almost 3" smaller around the hips. My current jacket falls loosely over my hips, even with layers; the new catches on my hips, does not lay right. Also, the wind guard over the front zipper was a generous 1.5", but BARELY COVERS the zipper on the new version, too bad. Skimping on size and fabric seems to be a trend at Pategonia as my down sweater, 1/2 zip nanopuff, and synchilla fleece are all large, but tried on a size large down sweater and nanopuff full zip at the store that were too tight across the chest. I love every thing about the Piolet, but had to return it as the new XL measured a size smaller than my current jacket. Disappointed long term customer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great jacket--IF you're the right size This is a fantastic hardshell IF--and only if--you can get the sizing to work for you. In terms of features, the Piolet is a very solid hardshell, especially for the price. The Gore Tex isn't noisy--there's no crinkling when you walk. The hood fits great, adjusts easily, and features a wide brim that's guaranteed to keep you dry in downpours. The interior lining is very smooth and makes it a bit warmer than unlined Gore Tex, although that may be a drawback if you're wanting to use this as a summer hardshell. I loved how the lining throughout the sleeves meant my layers didn't ride up when trying it on. And most importantly, the fabric felt tough and able to withstand challenging terrain and weather. Unfortunately, this jacket is not meant for slender, athletic women. If you have even moderate definition in your shoulders, back, and traps, consider the Triolet or the Refugitive instead. I'm 5'7", 125 pounds, and a 32B, and the medium was uncomfortably tight across the back and shoulders with just a couple of light layers underneath. A quick call to Patagonia confirmed that not all mediums are created equal: the Piolet's chest (43") is a full 2" smaller than the Triolet or Refugitive (45"). It felt constricting considering the activities you'd normally do with this jacket. I wish that the sizing would've worked out, because this this is a reasonably-priced, durable hardshell that will last for many years. If you can get the sizing right, I'm sure you will love the Piolet!
