General Summary:
The Creative Director of Product is responsible for leading and inspiring the Company’s product design efforts so as to provide original concepts and relevant designs across all product categories. The Creative Director will work with the VP of Global Product to lay the strategic and creative foundation for the company’s products. They will identify key industry trends and opportunities, and determine the best way for the Company to address business strategies and creative opportunities. The work of the Director and Design department should accurately reflect the Company’s design philosophy and define the Company as a leader in the Outdoor, Surf, and Fishing Industries. Such concepts and designs should be ones that move the meter in innovation and are of the highest quality, function, fit and with all fabrication done in the most environmentally friendly manner. The Creative Director will assume a leadership role in representing the Company’s Design department to the Company at large and the Industry. S/he will manage, motivate and inspire all Product Designers, in addition to the Company’s Fit Specialist, Apparel Graphics, Textile Design, and Illustration teams.

Essential Job Functions:

o Responsible for the management of all product categories in a way that creates cohesion and purpose across the whole brand.
o Work with the Design and Product Team members to ensure feasibility of designs that meet price points, merchandising needs and product creation timelines.
o Responsible for the creation and management of Design standards, schedules, calendars and output in an effort to achieve maximum efficiency and great product.
o Effectively create and communicate design concepts and presentations seasonally.
o Maintain knowledge of current trends, color, technology, and sports related products through travel, research, and product usage.
o Responsible for staying abreast of the latest technologies in fabric, construction, trims, manufacturing, sewing, etc. Responsible for ensuring this information is disseminated and utilized in relevant design concepts.
o Effectively build and manage the department’s budget.
o Plan and facilitate design off-sites or other design related extra curricular activities that inspire and motivate team members.
o Participation in testing of products and fabrics in the field.

Management Responsibilities
o Inspire, mentor and motivate a team of creative individuals; foster the growth and continued development of all team members.
o Responsible for the day-to-day management of designers to ensure that their design concepts and ideas are in alignment and support category, Company and strategic goals.
o Review and offer constructive feedback to teams and individuals on sketches and product concepts.
o Provide tools to foster the greatest assets of each person, and the team as a whole.
o Responsible for ensuring that all work done by the group is timely, accurate and complete.
o Responsible for the identification and management of contract designers.
o Maintain pulse on market and design trends, color directions.
o Ensure a cohesive product/color offering across all Product Teams.

Physical Requirements:
o Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
o Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
o Ability to look at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
o An innate ability to see color discrepancies.
o Ability to maintain a composed and professional demeanor within a flexible and (at times noisy) work environment.
o Must be able to travel internationally and domestically utilizing various transportation methods.
o Participation and understanding of the sports that the Company produces products for.

Minimum Job Qualifications:
o BA, BFA or BS in Design required.
o 10+ years relevant experience.
o Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to mentor others and lead design creation.
o Strong track record of success in design or design management.
o Keen understanding of line planning and product costing required.
o Thorough understanding of and proven experience in fabric development and sourcing required.
o Knowledge of garment construction, patterns and textiles required.
o Extreme attention to detail required.
o Proven ability to establish and maintain schedules.
o Ability to apply, perform and manage design skills such as drawing/sketching, concept ideation, color theory, use of texture, spacing and scale, visual presentation development and layout.
o Working knowledge of personal computers with demonstrated experience in the use of such programs as: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark, Word, Excel, Outlook and WebPDM.
o Strong presentation and public speaking skills.
o Excellent customer service skills, in person, on the phone and in writing.
o Able to work well under pressure and deadlines.
o Ability to gather appropriate input and make clear, well-reasoned decisions.
o Comfortable with team-based work structure; ability to remain flexible to change within the work environment and scope of responsibility.
o Demonstrates initiative, is conscientious and provides complete follow-through on areas of responsibility.
