Patagonia’s Material Planners are responsible for building and maintaining vendor relationships, negotiating materials (fabric and trim) costs/minimum/leadtime/capacity, and ensuring sufficient materials are reserved to support Patagonia’s seasonal and monthly buy’s forecast. In conjunction with Supply Planners, Sourcing Managers and Production Managers, s/he will set up seasonal buy schedules, develop manufacturing and delivery plans with material suppliers to address company’s delivery goals. The Material Planners will work closely with Sourcing Manager and counter parts in Material Development to develop most effective costing strategies for each season. S/he will lead the efforts in monitoring delivery and quality performance of the assigned material vendors, and training new suppliers with Patagonia’s processes.
Essential Job Functions:
o Actively work with Sourcing Manager and Material Development to develop costing strategy for carry-in materials every season.
o Actively work with Sourcing Manager to develop seasonal calendar for materials.
o Prior to sales samples and bulk order greige booking deadlines, actively work with Product Development to ensure BOM final deadlines are met and questionable yields on BOM’s are verified.
o Work with Sourcing Managers and Production Managers to ensure monthly material order deadlines are met to help suppliers stay within confirmed leadtime.
o Upon material explosion each season, take the lead in identifying items and/or suppliers that may have capacity limitations to support our garment forecast.
o Prior to Sales Samples and the first season’s buy, follow up with the material development and color teams to ensure there are no major pending issues that may affect production schedule.
o Actively work with Business Unit Directors, Material Development, and Sourcing Managers to develop alternative plans for specific material item(s) and/or supplier(s) that have capacity issues.
o Generate and maintain greige booking vs. garment forecast reports at all time.
o Work with assigned vendors to secure capacity needed to support garment forecast and delivery goals.
o Negotiate for flexibility with minimum and best possible surcharges if and when factories’ combined orders fall below minimum at monthly buy.
o Negotiate with suppliers for shortest possible leadtime in cases of significant increases in garment orders that cause greige shortages.
o Monitor suppliers’ delivery performance to ensure agreed leadtime is adhered to in sales sample and bulk production.
o Act as a liaison between material suppliers and garment factories when there are disputes over issues that fall outside of the normal scope outlined in the MOQ.
o Monitor, mediate, and direct the communication between Patagonia’s QA and Production, garment factory, and material supplier when there are quality issues discovered after fabrics already arrive at garment factories to ensure problems are resolved promptly and replacement materials are delivered to minimize the delay in garment delivery.
o Manage and maintain weekly Work In Progress (WIP) reporting from material suppliers. Analyze the WIP to identify potential delays and promptly address an action plan with suppliers and Patagonia’s Production Manager.
o Maintain open and frequent communication with Patagonia’s Material Development, Fabric Lab, Product Development, and Production on all issues related to material costing, quality, and production.
o Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
o Able to sit for extended periods of time.
o Ability to look at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
o Ability to maintain a composed and professional demeanor within a flexible and, at times, noisy work environment.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
o B.A / B.S. /A.A degree required.
o Minimum of 2 - 5 year’s experience in fabric/trim development, costing, and production with Asian & Domestic vendors.
o Working knowledge of personal computers with experience in the use of Word, Excel, and outlook.
o Demonstrated customer service and communication skills. The ability to write clearly and persuasively in addition to defining problems and articulating solutions within a group setting.
o Able to work well under pressure and deadlines.
o Comfortable with team-based work structure; ability to remain flexible to change within the work environment and scope of responsibility.
o Demonstrates initiative, is conscientious and provides complete follow-through on areas of responsibility.
