The Textile Designer is part of the driving force behind the creation of product concepts which strive to be original and relevant designs that define the Company as a leader in the Apparel Industry. S/he combines active product use experience, market knowledge and input from other team members to create original and innovative designs. Such designs should be ones that move the meter in innovation, are of the highest quality, and are executed in the most environmentally friendly manner. In conjunction with the Art Director, the Creative Director of Product and the Product Design Group, the Textile Designer interprets seasonal themes and color direction into printed, yarn dyed and knitted textiles. S/he is responsible for gathering ideas and concepts for use in the seasonal design palette, and for commercializing the designs for use.
Essential Job Functions:
o Maintain a pulse on market trends specific to color and textile design through travel, research and vendor relations.
o Make presentations to the Design Team and other company areas about textile direction and theory.
o Work with the Product Designers to develop and illustrate print, yarn dye and knit textiles as required.
o Manage input sessions and feedback to adapt and improve designs.
o Develop with factories and review strike-offs, sales samples, and production textiles.
o Communicate with factories regarding design interpretation and quality.
o Review vendor artwork and purchase original artwork for respective categories.
o Analyze seasonal color palette and match output to Company color standards.
o Develop printer color formulas and a master color list.
o Develop pattern repeats and CAD color-ways in the textile design system.
o Texture map prototype drawings or photos as needed for visualization tools.
o Provide files of textile patterns to the appropriate departments for relevant meetings and presentations.
o Help maintain textile artwork library and design archive.
o Actively participate in design off-sites, inspiration trips or other design related extra curricular activities.
o Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
o Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
o Ability to look at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
o Possesses an innate ability to see color discrepancies.
o Ability to maintain a composed and professional demeanor within a flexible and (at times noisy) work environment.
o Must be able to travel internationally and domestically utilizing various transportation methods.
o Participation and understanding of the sports that the Company produces products for.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
o College degree in textile design.
o 5+ years of textile design experience.
o 5+ years experience in developing and fostering relationships with factories and vendors, which may be domestic or international.
o Strong drawing and visual presentation skills.
o Proficient use of Macintosh computers in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel programs and in the operation of equipment such as: fax, modem and copiers.
o Strong working knowledge Adobe creative software and experience with textile specific software such as NedGraphics, Lectra Kaledo or Pointcarre.
o Extreme attention to detail.
o Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and written, with a wide variety of people.
o Able to work well under pressure and deadlines.
o Ability to gather appropriate input and make clear, well-reasoned decisions.
o Comfortable with team-based work structure; ability to remain flexible to change within the work environment and scope of responsibility.
o Demonstrates initiative, is conscientious and provides complete follow-through on areas of responsibility.
