The Product Developer- Kid’s Apparel develops and manages a group of products from concept through production. The Product Developer will collaborate with the Manager of Product Development to achieve seasonal product calendar initiatives.
The Developer coordinates and defines materials, construction, fit, sourcing, costing, and commercial execution of product. The position requires extensive knowledge of apparel construction, fit and garment costing.
The Development Department is the functional lead of consistent fit and construction while protecting brand integrity for all Patagonia Apparel Product. Collaborating with key cross functional teams such as line management, design, production, materials, quality assurance and overseas teams to ensure the best quality product is developed out in market without unnecessary harm to the environment is essential.
Essential Job Functions:
o Identify materials and construction technology that supports designer’s vision and product requirements.
o Partner with production team and Manager of Development to determine the sourcing strategy for the season.
o Drive block pattern development and approvals with pattern team and factory partners as needed.
o Manage the calendar and process including costing, quality evaluation, fabric, trim and matching requirements for each product.
o Lead and direct development process to achieve commercial viability of designs through collaboration with Fabric Sourcing, Design, Trim Development, Purchasing, Costing and Quality Departments.
o Produce accurate product specifications and ensure they are maintained and distributed effectively.
o Develop and maintain BOM’s and accurate database information that result in efficient raw material purchasing.
o Manage and ensure each prototypes and sale sample are delivered in timely delivery approvals to ensure the Company’s quality standards as well as on time deliveries.
o Coordinate all factory communication for the development of proto-types. Establish the timeline, raw material management, and approval requirements with the factory.
o Manage garment fit process in collaboration with Fit Manager, design and pattern making. Instruct manufacturer on necessary changes to a pattern to influence the fit.
o Collaborate with factories to achieve ‘state of the art’ opportunities for product innovation.
o Support the sourcing and training of new factory resources.
o Lead product fittings and team meetings.
o Deliver regular team performance metrics to management.
o Ensure that Company standards for quality, function and reducing environmental impacts are met.
o Support product team by assisting in global sales meeting preparation and product discussions.
o Ability to look at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
o Ability to maintain a composed and professional demeanor within a flexible and (at times noisy) work environment.
o Must be able to travel internationally and domestically utilizing various forms of transportation.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
o 5+ years’ experience in kid’s product development, design or production in garment manufacturing.
o Knowledgeable of kid’s apparel construction, children quality/safety standards, material construction and properties, pattern making, costing, embroidery and surface applications (e.g. screen printing, etc.).
o Exceptionally strong problem solving and negotiating skills.
o Strong verbal and written communication skills including meeting facilitation and process implementation.
o Excellent skills in creating and writing construction specifications in Illustrator or In design.
o Excellent understanding of the design, development and merchandising process from inception through production.
o Ability to interpret design intent and offer alternative solutions.
o Ability to be a technical resource to others.
o Proven performance history with domestic and offshore vendors and manufacturers.
o Extreme attention to detail.
o Knowledge of garment fit and the ability to instruct a manufacturer on necessary changes to a pattern to influence the fit.
o Able to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines.
