General Summary:
The Designer of Packs, Luggage and Accessories at Patagonia is part of the driving force behind the creation of product concepts which strive to be original and relevant designs that define the Company as a category leader. S/he combines active product use experience, market knowledge and input from other team members to create original and innovative concepts. Designs should be ones that move the meter in innovation, are of the highest quality/functionality and are fabricated in the most environmentally friendly manner.

Essential Job Functions:
o Effectively create relevant, innovative design concepts and communicate and present these concepts in a concise and professional manner through a line review process.
o In conjunction with the Manager of Field Testing, manage the testing of products and fabrics in the field. Ensure results are incorporated in to design concepts.
o Ensure that all products are of the highest quality, function and fit, yet are beautiful, and fabricated in an environmental manner.
o Collaborate with Textile & Graphic Design, Fabric Development, Quality, Line Management, Ambassadors and other technical designers to ensure product specific elements are relevant to the Packs, Luggage and Accessories category and designs.
o Work with the Design and Product Team members to ensure feasibility of designs which meet price points, merchandising needs and product creation timelines.
o Provide product information through detailed drawings and complete check lists to Developers and Product Line Managers so that prototypes and BOM’s can be created in an accurate and timely manner.
o Maintain knowledge of current trends, color, fabrics, trims, technology, and other sports related products through travel, research, and product usage experience.
o Actively participate in design off-sites, inspiration trips or other design related extra curricular activities.

Physical Requirements:
o Participation and understanding of the sports that the Company produces products for.
o Must be able to travel internationally and domestically utilizing various transportation methods.
o Ability to maintain a composed and professional demeanor within a flexible and (at times noisy) work environment.
o An innate ability to see color discrepancies.
o Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
o Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
o Ability to look at a computer screen for extended periods of time.

Minimum Job Qualifications:
o BA, BFA or BS in Industrial Design required.
o 2-5 years relevant design experience in Hardgoods.
o Keen understanding of line planning and product costing required.
o Knowledge of Tehcnical Hardgoods construction, patterns and textiles required.
o Ability to manufacture fully functioning prototypes and/or mockups required.
o Thorough understanding of Hardgoods fabric required.
o Extreme attention to detail required and a proven ability to establish and maintain schedules and deadlines.
o Ability to apply, perform and manage design skills such as drawing/sketching, concept ideation, color theory, use of texture, spacing and scale, visual presentation development and layout.
o Working knowledge of personal computers with demonstrated experience in the use of such programs as: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Word, Excel and Web PDM or other Product Line Management Software.
o Strong presentation and public speaking skills.
o Excellent customer service skills, in person, on the phone and in writing.
o Able to work well under pressure and deadlines.
o Ability to gather appropriate input and make clear, well-reasoned decisions.
o Comfortable with team-based work structure; ability to remain flexible to change within the work environment and scope of responsibility.
o Demonstrates initiative, is conscientious and provides complete follow-through on areas of responsibility.
