We took our tried-and-true Wavefarer® Board Shorts silhouette and created the Stretch Planing—a trimmer, more fitted board short made of lightweight recycled polyester with 2-way mechanical stretch, a DWR (durable water repellent) finish and 50+ UPF sun protection; 20" outseam.

Posted up in mainland Mexico with a full quiver and a pair of swim fins, the redesigned Stretch Planing Board Shorts offer a slimmer profile, minimal drag and highly functional 2-way mechanical stretch. Based on our Wavefarer® design, but with a flat, streamlined waistband and closer-fitting lines through the thigh, the Stretch Planings are made of quick-drying, superlightweight 100% recycled polyester with highly functional 2-way mechanical stretch. They feature a DWR (durable water repellent) finish, 50+ UPF sun protection and are inseam-free to help eliminate chafing. The closure is a flat-lying fly with single rubber button and bartacked ladderlock drawstring for durability. Self-draining pocket on right thigh has a noncorroding plastic zipper, internal key loop and added zipper pull for ease of use. Outseam is 20".

Recycled Polyester

Regulator

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Sun Protection

Lacking fur, feathers or scales, we humans have to think up clever ways to protect ourselves from the sun. Products with the UPF designation provide built-in sun protection that won’t wear off.

UPF stands for “Ultraviolet Protection Factor.” This value represents the fractional amount of the sun’s harmful UV rays that pass through a fabric. A rating of “25” indicates that only 1/25th , or 4% of the UV rays pass through the garment.

Patagonia products with rated UPF protection are tested independently to meet Australia/New Zealand or AATCC protocols. A rating of 15-24 earns a product a rating of “good”; a rating of 25-39 is "very good"; and a rating of 40-50+ is “excellent.” *

* When tested in accordance with Australian/New Zealand test methods AS/NZS 4399 or USA test methods AATCC 183/ASTM D6603/ASTM D6544.
