In the spring of 2005 Maine Woods Forever commissioned photographer Bridget Besaw to create a series of photographs depicting the various ways people treasure the North Woods of Maine (hiking, fishing, canoeing, swimming, painting, snowshoeing etc.). Her commission coincides with the 150th anniversary of Henry David Thoreau’s final trip to the Maine Woods and commemorates the newly recognized, yet very old Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail. Wildness within Wildness without (2007) features the photographs Bridget created over two years along the Trail following various conservation and recreational groups as they explored the region. A collection of essays by Maine wilderness writers and conservationists as well as Thoreau quotes to weave the images together. Recommended by Patagonia.
