There's much to see 14,000 feet up at the Chasm View bivy: a vertigo-inducing panorama of the Diamond and alpenglow over the Rockies. There's also chilly air in any season, and that's where our Down Sweater comes in. It delivers minimal weight, superb compressibility and high-loft warmth. The ripstop shell with a DelugeĀ® DWR (durable water repellent) finish does more than look sharp: it's tear-resistant and windproof and made from 100% recycled polyester. Details include top-quality 800-fill-power goose down, a quilted-through construction, two exterior zippered pockets, a stretch-mesh interior chest pocket that doubles as a zippered stuff sack and a carabiner clip-in loop. Drawcord hem.

Material

Recycled Polyester
We recycle used soda bottles, unusable second quality fabrics and worn out garments into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Technology

At Patagonia we seek to build the best product and cause no unnecessary harm. That's our mission statement, and it takes many forms. As it applies to making products, we work hard to source materials and use processes that are less harmful to the Earth without compromising quality. Because to us, quality is not only how well a product performs and holds up, but also how it's made.

  • The Good:

We use high-quality goose down, an exceptionally efficient insulator. The down comes from humanely-raised geese and is minimally processed. The light shell is made of recycled polyester.
  • The Bad:

We had to increase the weight of the shell fabric when we switched to recycled polyester. The zipper is treated with a DWR that contains perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a synthetic chemical that is now presistent in the environment, and the product is not yet recyclable.
  • What We Think:

We're investigating alternatives to the use of PFOA in water repellents - and looking for ways to recycle down garments.
