Product Information Product Footprint
The gap between cool air on the Grand Canyon's rim and the heat of the canyon floor grows wider with every stride. This long-sleeve crew feels soft and comfortable worn alone in warm temperatures or beneath outer layers in cooler ones. It offers great technical abilities: naturally resisting odor, moving moisture away from the skin, regulating body temperature, and maintaining a consistent stretch. It's made from our lightest merino layer – a silky-soft yet durable jersey knit of 63% merino wool wrapped around a 37% all-recycled polyester core. The wide cuff bands hold sleeves where you place them, and offset shoulder seams pair nicely with pack straps. Slow-washed for next-to-skin softness. Machine-wash cold; lay flat to dry. Recyclable through the Common Threads Recycling Program.

Material

Chlorine-free Wool
Raw, untreated wool has scales that make it itchy and coarse and cause it to shrink, so most wool fabrics are treated with chlorine to reduce the scales. Our 100% merino wool is so fine it can be slow-washed without chlorine for softness and minimal shrinkage.

Technology

Recycled Polyester
We recycle used soda bottles, unusable second quality fabrics and worn out garments into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

  • The Good:

The wool comes from superbly run sheep ranches, at the base of New Zealand's Southern Alps, whose environmental standards are stringent – and ratio of head to hectare low. Our dyeing factory uses no heavy metals for our goods. And we use a domestic sewing factory that has worked with us for more than 20 years.
  • The Bad:

The distance the wool travels from sheep to purchasable garment is 16,200 miles. It wends its way from New Zealand to Malaysia to Japan to a Los Angeles port before reaching our Distribution Center in Reno, Nevada. This is not sustainable.
  • What We Think:

The ranching is sound; the knitting factory employs the best available practices; and the quality of the sewing is first rate. But the multicontinental shipping adds environmental cost.
