Patagonia Surf Ambassador Tomoko Okazaki
Wind and waves are the elements of Tomoko’s existence. Raised on the Japanese coast, she began windsurfing at sixteen and was soon adventuring to exotic shores around the world. Now settled in Maui, her passions include kiteboarding, surfing, paddling, backcountry snowboarding and leading wind and kite camps for women. “In many ways,” she says, “the ocean rewards me beyond my imagination.”

Career Highlights

  • Windsurfing – second in the world in waveriding in 1991 and a top finalist in many contests (eventually discovered that traveling and searching for good places with good friends was more fun than chasing points)
  • First Japanese woman to snowboard in Alaska among other big mountains
  • A female pioneer in kitesurfing – still pursuing the surfing aspect of kitesurfing
  • Standup paddling to uncrowded spots and doing long distance downwind runs
