Job Title:         Product Design Intern

General Summary

The Product Design Intern is part of Patagonia’s team of Product Designers which are ultimately responsible for the creation of relevant, innovative design concepts for the Company’s products.  With a solid understanding of the Company philosophy and product knowledge, the Design Intern is responsible for supporting designers in the process of ensuring that all product designs are of the highest quality, functional, beautiful, fit, and are fabricated in an environmental manner.  The Design Intern will be a part of the Lifestyle Sportswear & Kids Team, but will collaborate with all product designers (including those on the Performance Sportswear and Technical Design teams).  They will contribute to the creative process through seasonal research, spec pack creation, and the development of product ideations and presentations.  In addition, the Design Intern will help support the greater Design Team with Design Presentation, 2D design review and partnering with Product Development on fabric and trims concepts and manufacturing strategies.

Essential Job Functions

  • Effectively assist the designers in supporting relevant, innovative design concepts and communicate and present these in a concise and professional manner through a line review process.
  • Collaborate with Textile Design, Graphic Design and Color to ensure product specific elements are created specific to each category and design.
  • Digitize hand sketches following Patagonia’s digital drawing guidelines.
  • Create detailed spec packs, in collaboration with designers, through detailed drawings and complete briefs to Product Developers and Product Managers so that prototypes and BOM’s can be created.
  • Must also be able to build Mood/ Concept boards.
  • Must also be able to design trend reports and show clear diagnostics of global trends in any design category.
  • Work with the Design and Product Team members to ensure feasibility of designs which meet price points, merchandising needs and product creation timelines. 
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends, color, fabrics, trims, and technology.
  • Actively participate in design off-sites, inspiration trips or other design related extra-curricular activities.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to look at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to maintain a composed and professional demeanor within a flexible and (at times noisy) work environment.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • College degree in progress preferably in Design.
  • Proficient in Adobe Illustrator with working knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of garment construction, patterns and textiles required.
  • Ability to apply, perform and manage design skills such as drawing/sketching, concept ideation, color theory, use of texture, spacing and scale, visual presentation development and layout.
  • Extreme attention to detail required and a proven ability to establish and maintain schedules and deadlines.
  • Understanding of line planning and product costing is a plus.
  • Ability to gather appropriate input and make clear, well-reasoned decisions.
  • Comfortable with team-based work structure; ability to remain flexible to change within the work environment and scope of responsibility.
  • Demonstrates initiative, is conscientious and provides complete follow-through on areas of responsibility.

  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills a must, as is the ability to juggle many tasks at one time and change gears quickly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and written, with a wide variety of people.

Internship Notes:

All applicants must have graduated in 2019 or be returning to school in the fall in 2019. This is a paid internship that will also include financial support for summer housing and temporary relocation to the area.

This job posting will remain active until January 1st, 2019.

Final Project:

All interns will be assigned a project to work on over the summer, and to present on at the completion of their internship.
