Fair Trade premium used for: household items, medicine
Approximately 525 workers at MAS Active–Leisureline (including janitorial and security personnel) received the Fair Trade premium in 2016. They voted to use the extra money to purchase packs of essential household items, including dry foods, medicine, toiletries and personal products. The indirect benefits amounted to almost two weeks’ pay, and the vouchers gave them 10% off the retail price of their groceries, along with free delivery.
Household essentials may not sound super exciting, but the money they would have spent on these things they were then able to spend elsewhere. The first distribution of premiums came right before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, which was particularly useful during an important time of celebration.
