We’ve tried out our warmest down jacket for babies in the Patagonia steppe and Rocky Mountain front, and unlike our baby testers, it’s indefatigable. The Baby Hi-Loft Down Sweater Hoody is totally wind- and weather-resistant thanks to a super-durable polyester min-ripstop and polyester plain weave liner fabric, both with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. Lofty warmth comes from 100% Traceable Down (600-fill-power duck down traced back to birds never force-fed or live-plucked), which unpacks from small spaces with its shape intact. Cold season amenities include: quilted 3-panel hood; easy-entry, full-length zipper with wind flap and zipper garage; two zippered handwarmer pockets; elasticized back hem; binding around hood and sleeve cuff to seal out chill.
  • Lightweight, windproof shell fabric has high tear-strength and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish
  • 100% Traceable Down (600-fill-power duck down that can be traced back to birds that were never force-fed, never live-plucked) is compressible and warm; quilt-through construction keeps down in place
  • Warm, quilted three-panel hood construction with spandex binding at opening for a secure fit
  • Full-length zipper with wind flap and zipper garage eliminates chin chafe
  • Two zippered handwarmer pockets with reflective webbing pulls
  • Spandex binding around hood and sleeve cuff keeps cold out; elasticized back hem
  • Hand-me-down ID label
  • Shell: 1.4-oz 20-denier polyester mini-ripstop. Lining: 2.2-oz 100% polyester plain weave. Both with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. Water Resistant

DWR
(durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Traceable Down Insulation

Patagonia Traceable Down provides the highest assurance of animal welfare in the apparel industry. Every down cluster, in every one of our down products, comes exclusively from birds that were never force-fed and never live-plucked. How do we know? We hired an independent third-party expert to trace and verify our down supply chain from farm to jacket–and every step in between. Learn more

Baby Hi-Loft Down Sweater Hoody is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Toasty! I purchased this jacket in red size 2T for my son. It was perfect for our WI winters. Very toasty and can fit layers underneath. The only minor issue is that if that jacket gets wet it's no longer warm, which worked fine for us because he has a different snowsuit for serious snow play.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Jacket, could be 5 stars if improved I recently bought this jacket for the second time for my 4 year old son. His previous jacket lasted us 2 winter seasons. (we wear to school daily, for sledding, skiing, etc) I bought a size up and it lasted easily through growth for 2 years. However the fabric does have a tendency to snag. I noticed snags but never holes. Previously we owned the blue color and it was washed many times – always looked great after washing. This time I purchased the “French Red” as I wanted something bright! I love the color however one flaw in the design is the dark navy lining. Note to the Patagonia Designers - I can see the dark lining coming through the red fabric at the arm seams – which makes the coat look dirty. I would not purchase a color with dark lining again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great but runs big the jacket is great looking!! but i found it runs BIG. i.e. the 3 was too big (even if i factored in growth over the next few months) for my 2.9 year old...and she is tall for her age. i am reordering the jacket in a size 2 and hopefully it fits well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it if you live in a colder climate Patagonia makes excellent outerwear for little ones. We have the hi-loft down hoody, down sweater, and down vest for our daughter, and I recommend all three of them. In our experience, the down hoody is true to size compared to the down sweater which is sized quite large: we are using a 12mo hoody and a 6mo sweater for our 1-year old. I generally prefer jackets without hoods (that's what hats are for!) but when temperatures drop below freezing, this hoody jacket does a much better job keeping our daughter warm since it completely covers her neck. It also stays dry when she's playing in the snow, as long as we're not out for too long. If you experience colder winters and like to spend time outdoors, this jacket is worth the money.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Easy Tear I have two boy (5 and 10) and purchased about every Patagonia jackets for my boys over the years. I have to say that this jacket is the biggest disappointment. I purchased this for younger one and he loves it and looks great. But the jacket rips so easily that would not consider buying another one. As soon as I had a tear repaired, i found another. I would not recommend this for an active kid.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great winter jacket I bought this jacket for my 10 month old and he wore it all winter. We also bought the down sweater, which we liked, but this is much better for a little one because of the hood. I plan to order another one this year. Fit is regular - slimmer than the fleece jackets, but not tight. I sewed fleece material to the ends of the sleeves to create foldover hand warmers for very cold days. I wish Patagonia could add hand cover/mitten sleeves themselves since since separate mittens are so hard to keep on baby hands. Carters has these on most of their winter baby clothes and many pajamas and they are great!
