We built the Black Hole™ Pack because more often than not, your day has its own plans. This rugged, highly weather-resistant gear bag protects your belongings when the weather turns surly or your hike morphs into a contentious scramble. The large main pocket holds the lion’s share. An internal sleeve carries most 15" laptops or a hydration reservoir, and a mesh pocket equipped with a key keeper organizes small items. Daisy chain lash points secure a skateboard or yoga mat—a zippered front pocket holds quick-access items. For carrying comfort, the backpack’s padded shoulder straps have load lifters and a sternum strap. A molded back panel sheds moisture and allows a cooling airflow, and a simple waistband secures the pack. Made from 13-oz 450-denier polyester ripstop (50% solution-dyed) with a TPU-film laminate and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Water Resistant

(durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Weekend warrior must have backpack This bag is a multi tasker!! I use it every weekend dragging my base layers back in forth from the ski mountain back home to work and then back every weekend. Not only does it hold a good amount of clothes but it has just enough padding to give comfort on your back while simultaneously protecting a laptop or tablet in the inside pocket. The side zip is amazing and allows easy access to any part of your backpack without taking everything out. I keep mine on it's side and as I fill it back up during the week I just unzip the side zip = AWESOME! The top which folds down allows for extra storage if you decide to let it stay unclipped....which I tend to do a lot. Here is the best part!! Usually I have mine so full that I forget it can pack down very nicely! Last weekend I left my smaller water hydration backpack at home by mistake so I decided to try this one. I dumped all the clothes out and was surprised how small you can make it. Plus It is already set up for a water hose and you can clip in a hydration bag inside! Perfect! So I tested it out skinning up the mountain and I have no complaints. Just enough back support, thickness of straps is great and I like the chest clip as well. Now I use it anytime for snowshoeing, hiking or skinning up the mountain. I am sure this summer I will have more to say!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Patagonia Black Hole Backpack experience Unbelievable! I just got back from South Africa. It was my head rest on the plane, my pack used to climb up Table Mountain, My leak proof back through rains in Durban, easy open and close at security gates and more. Now back in the USA this pack is my running pack to take to races, my work brief case for work, and more. Simply said, it is the best I have ever owned and I have been through many brands. I would have paid even more for it. It is also firm and even sits with it's top open-ready for storage. My laptop is safely kept in the computer compartment. I could go on.....

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great travel bag! I got this bag for Christmas, love all the hidden compartments. I love the fact that's it's weather proof since it also doubles as my work bag. My only complaint is that it does not hv a place for my water bottle on the outside. But plenty of room to just stick it inside. Just make sure it does not have a chance to leak.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I don't like it, I LOVE IT! This bag has been awesome. I have not been easy on this bag and it's held up great. I love the lap top sleeve and all the different ways you can get into the bag. I use it as my every day work bag... I've used it as my carry on for flights... I've used it as a day bag for hiking. Nice work Patagonia!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Honestly Great Product I bought this bag after I previously found out that the Anacapa was too small for me. The bag is amazing really and you can fit so much into it. I can fit several rows of binders and books and also fit more above them thanks to the room in the flap. Ive recognized that this bag also doubles as a duffle due to the fact that it has that large flap and a full handle right above the daisy chain. The bag is comfortable, functional, and looks great. I live in Michigan and as most probably know, we get a lot of snow. I snowboard quite a bit and walk around campus as well and needed something that wasn't going to make my books and supplies wet. I couldn't quite afford the Stormfront so this was the closest thing. Truly a Patagonia quality product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice bag that I primarily use for climbing I bought the 32L Black Hole Pack with climbing in mind since I found my 25L Black Hole Pack to be a tad smaller than I'd prefer for climbing and so I could keep the 25L dedicated to bike commuting. I can fit my trad rack, rock shoes, 70m rope, helmet, and other essentials inside the 32L (though it's pretty tight with the rope). The side zipper is very nice for being able to access something at the bottom of the bag. I've also used the bag as a rope bucket to keep the rope out of the dirt while belaying. While I know Patagonia has a number of bags specifically designed for climbing (e.g. the Ascensionist, etc.), I've always preferred the Black Hole line for their durability and water resistance. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the 32L but I do prefer the design of the 25L. The flap of the 32L is kind of weird. The bag basically zips up and then folds over itself. If the design is going to have a flap, I'd prefer the traditional drawstring style with a separate flap that covers the top of the bag to keep water out. That type of design would also allow draping things (e.g. a rope) over the top of the bag and under the flap. Overall, the 32L is a good bag but the design could use some tweaks. The 25L is a homerun, though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super Chic I needed a sturdy backpack for my commute to/from work in San Francisco so the chance of rain/fog is always high which is why I picked the Black Hole Back for the waterproof feature! I got it in black and it is very chic looking. It fits great and holds ALMOST everything I need for my commute. I have a 15 minute walk to my bus and then I commute 1.5 hours on the bus so I bring a neck pillow with me along with a book, chargers and other things for my laptop- it all fits great! My ONLY complaint... there is no place to put a water bottle!!! The Black Hole 25 has a water bottle holder, but why doesn't the Black Hole 32?!?! Still love the pack, but a little sad that I need to rework the inside to fit my water bottle!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits EVERYTHING This bag is great! It replaced the previous version of the Black Hole Pack, which let rain in through the top zip. The front webbing for clipping stinky climbing shoes to is a must. The inside space is awesome with its many pockets, and the dual-directional side zip is amazing (although the bottom zip pull which allows for side loading could use a hook or snap to keep it from opening if the pull catches on something, which I should note hasn't actually happened yet). It goes climbing, hiking, and to work. The only other thing that could make this bag better would be water resistant zips, since the rest of the bag keeps water out really well!
