Alaskan ridge traverses or long descents in the Bitterroots, nothing beats a warm balaclava when it comes to stopping wind and icy air. Ours is made from Capilene® Thermal Weight, the warmest and most breathable baselayer in the Capilene family. It is soft, stretchy and compressible, with a smooth jersey face that glides beneath layers and a brushed-fleece interior to insulate, wick moisture and rest smoothly against the skin. The face opening fits above your mouth or under your chin, depending upon the coverage you require. Made of 3.8-oz proprietary performance Polartec® Power Grid™ fabric, with Polygiene® permanent odor control.

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Odor Resistant

Polygiene® odor control permanently protects your garments from smelling like a middle school locker room. Sweat itself is odorless, but it creates the conditions that bacteria need to multiply, and some of those bacteria produce odors. Polygiene permanent odor control stops the growth of odor-causing bacteria on fabrics, so you can wear more and wash less.

Active only on the fabric surface, Polygiene permanent odor control does not interfere with perspiration or with the skin’s natural bacterial flora. Polygiene particles are more than 100 times larger than nanoparticles and therefore are too large to penetrate to the skin’s barrier. Polygiene-treated fabrics have received Medical Class 1 approval in Europe, the same class that includes bandages.

Cap Tw Balaclava is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from great warmth/weight ration Worn for skiing cold Wisconsin nights. Fits well under helmet, and doesn't ice up like other balaclavas

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for cool days, not frigid Works well for nice days on the mountain, but a little too thin for the frigid & windy single temp days...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just like you, I thought no way. I looked at the pics and the price and thought it was too thin and wouldn't keep me warm. I have worn it down to 10 and up to 35 and that is the point, its versatile and warm. But the best feature is that the frost and ice buildup you get on that thick balaclava that you normally use doesn't really happen on this one. Its very breathable and if it gets damp it dries quickly. Plus its small and folds up neatly into a pocket if you get too warm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Biking It's just warm enough to take the sting out of the cool rides without being overly hot when I warm up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Full Coverage, Breathable New favorite accessory! This has a super long neck; I haven't had it come fully untucked even after hours of activity. The opening is easy to pull up over your whole face (under the eyes), or below the nose, or down below the chin (though it's a tad snug when stretched under the chin, but very wearable that way regardless). Check out my photo of the fabric detail - the Cap 4 material is actually super thin with rows of little insulating pillows, which somehow makes this thing magically breathable yet nice and warm at the same time. So much nicer than my old, thick polar fleece neck gaiter! I've worn it for about 13 consecutive hours during an alpine ascent/descent; it never got itchy and I was able to regulate heat very well by alternating wearing it under my chin vs. over my mouth. The seams are nice and flat too; no pressure points under a helmet. I bring this thing everywhere now; great little essential.
