The Chacabuco carries a full quiver of gear when you’re traversing a pulsing city or crossing a wind-scoured mountain pass. It houses everything in two main compartments and has an exterior shock cord for additional carrying capacity. The generous main compartment carries the majority of your gear and comes with a raised, padded sleeve sized to hold most 17" laptops. Equipped with a tube port, the sleeve also accepts a hydration reservoir when you leave your laptop at home. A secondary compartment stores everyday necessities like keys, pens and a phone. A zippered outside pocket holds energy bars or small essentials, and a brushed tricot-lined top pocket protects sunglasses or an audio device. Two stretch pockets keep water bottles within reach. The Chacabuco's suspension system uses heat-venting airflow mesh on the back panel and shoulder straps. With a webbing waist belt, sternum strap and compression straps to stabilize the load. Made from 450-denier 100% recycled polyester, with a 450-denier 100% recycled polyester base. The lining is 200-denier 100% polyester. All fabrics have a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

Water Resistant

(durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome commuting backpack I bought this last month because I was starting a longer commute into the New York City. I have always loved Patagonia so I did some research and went into the store, tried this one, and love the comfort. Even when I have it almost filled, the support is great and I don't feel like I am weighed down. Would recommend to anyone!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Straps do not hold in place firmly The straps do not hold in place for me, especially when I try to pack it up for an overnight or weekend hike. Also slips a good bit when I commute by bike. Love the amount of room available in this pack and the fit of it, but wish the straps would remain in place and not slip frequently.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great backpack with lots of different spaces I bought this backpack before Christmas and wanted to take it for a trip. Unfortunately it did not arrive in time for my trip. I missed it but hope to enjoy it for next trip

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Water Resistant, Great Water Bottle Pockets I bought this backpack 3 months ago and am very happy with it. I use it for my books and laptop in college, and it fits everything I need. My favorite parts are the water resistant material and HUGE water bottle pockets. No other company that I could find had these features. I chose black, which is very stylish. There are certain drawbacks(not enough pockets for organization, waist straps get in the way), but have not made me regret my purchase for a second.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This Model Has Thin Straps Dont Hold Adjustments I recently purchased my third version of this pack since around 2010 (both other versions got stolen during car breakins). I've hiked 5-10 miles per weekend and countless other day hikes into national forest wilderness with these, logging untold thousands of miles. This new version is sadly a big disappointment because it has thinner, smoother straps that don't hold shoulder and hip adjustments. So I have to return it. To be clear about the issue, the shoulder and hip straps are constantly coming loose because they are too thin and the material too smooth to grab on to the clips. I am so bummed because past versions have been amazing! I hope you good Patagonia People will see this and make sure the next model's straps are more like the older models' (wider and with sufficient texture to hold adjustments) - and if you need a tester to take one out on the trail and let you know if the issue is fixed, glad to help! PS - the older versions that I used had a clip at the top of the pocket that holds the water bladder so that you could clip the top of the bladder to the top of the pack. It is gone with this version so I had to use a carabeaner to hold up my water bladder. If you can please have that clip re-added as it was with the older models (I think the last one I had was 2012), it would be great!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect for me I bought this bag primarily to schlep things around the college campus where I work. The interior pocket fits my laptop and clipboard perfectly. In the main compartment I can fit my soft, insulated lunch box that holds a day's worth of food, and there is plenty of room in the far back pocket for my pens, pencils, dry markers, electronic cords etc. Generous side pockets hold my water bottle on one side and coffee thermos on the other. We had a couple of 100+ degree days and my back did not get sticky once because of the way the shoulder straps work. The one drawback is that the bag has a waist strap, which, when fitted to me, dangles a little too much when not clipped and tends to catch on things.
