Read More Close
Designed for cold-weather fishing, our Tough Puff Hoody covers all the important bases: warmth, breathability and freedom of movement. Durable enough to push through tangled cover on the way to the water, it features a strong, stretchy and abrasion-resistant face fabric with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish that shakes off moisture or passing showers. The ultralight, highly breathable 60-g FullRange® polyester stretch insulation offers all-day warmth that lets you swing flies in comfort—whether you’re wearing the Tough Puff on its own or as a midlayer under a wading jacket in wetter conditions. The streamlined cuffs have a simple elastic opening, and the interior arms have the same water-resisting DWR finish as the outside—meaning you’ll get the least water uptake possible from willfully dunking your arms up to the elbows in the river. Two large, vertical fly-box pockets on chest, two zip-closure handwarmer pockets, and a moisture-wicking, 100% recycled polyester Capilene® interior lining round out the technical package.

  • Extremely durable 100% polyester outer shell with mechanical stretch and a moisture-shedding DWR (durable water repellent) finish

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Water Resistant

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Men's Tough Puff Hoody is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost I've been looking for the perfect synthetic insulated jacket for the PNW , and I was hoping the Patagonia Tough Puff Hoody would be it. First of all, this jacket does so many things well: the outer fabric is somehow soft and durable, the breathable insulation has a huge range of comfortable temperatures, the pocket arrangement has utility without looking like Grandpa's fishing vest, the form-fitting hood doesn't impede vision. It's easy to see why I was so excited for this jacket. Unfortunately, the one thing holding this jacket back is the fit. Yes, as others have mentioned, it is a little boxy in the torso, but I could deal with that. It is also noticeably longer than any of my other jackets, but again, not a deal breaker. The real problem is the small arm holes where the sleeve meets the body of the jacket. If the jacket were made of less stretchy material, it would be even more obvious, but even with the stretch it is a deal-breaking, dream-shattering, now-I-have-to-start-looking-for-another-jacket bummer. I am 5' 7" 155 lbs with a muscular build. I've had the small for a week and will be returning it. Unfortunately, I tried the medium on in the store and was swimming in it. If you have a more normally proportioned body than I do, this is a fantastic jacket and I highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tough indeed I just got this after putting a bunch of holes in my Nano Air Jacket, bushwacking and miss casting. I didn't want to ruin my other jacket so I got this guy. Day one in February north of Silverthorne on the Blue River with the air being in the mid 30's and the water temps on the low 30's I decided to test these jackets claim of keeping you warm even when wet. I was chased out of a hole by a moose and her calf and I miss stepped and swam to the other side of the river. I was in full panic and soon to be hypothermic, I dump my waders out and rang the water out of my layers and surprisingly I was STILL WARM. The jacket beaded water off like a champ and kept me out there for another hour or two fishing. I'm impressed so far with its warm and its sleeves. I'll report back after it does a season in AK with me. My only downside is its a bit big, but not too big that I'd want to get a smaller size. About me: I'm 200-210lbs ( I have some of my own natural insulation) and about 5'11 in flip flops, I shred 90-110 days a year and fish almost 200+. I'm a gear nerd because I have to trust my choices to keep up with me. I work most nights till 2 am and I'm on the skin track at 3 am. My gear has to go from functional to fashion and keep up with my no sleep just go regardless of the weather because this is my only time off kind of guy. I'm a gear destroyer I break a rod or two each season from chasing trout, pike, musky and the occasional steelhead or when I get to go home and burn out drags with stripers and tuna in the fall. My gear must be able to live in packs and in the salt air.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Jacket I’ve ever owned!!! I just bought this recently. Unbelievable! Comfy, lightweight, warm yet breathable. Can be used as layer with a shell over it or alone. Like they said, it will shed a drizzle or periodic drizzle and you’ll be bone dry. My favorite part is there is enough room in the arms and has enough stretch to cast and swing flies on the river. My only gripe is they need to offer some more color options soon. Maybe a green or an olive option, maybe even camo. I bought the black, so we’ll see how warm it gets in direct sun. Honestly best jacket I’ve ever purchased!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely piece, but runs large This has been a great asset for steelhead season on the Salmon River. Paired with a nice base layer and vest I've stayed warm and dry on 35 degree days with a light mist. Only issue is the jacket ran large all over. Sleeves long, body wide. Normally I am a reliable Medium in most Patagonia clothing, but had to step down to a small for this jacket. Particularly needing a decent fit for range of motion spey casting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tough Puff I recently bought this jacket and used it on a drizzly grey Novenber day steelhead fishing in northern Michigan. I can say that I stayed dry and the water rolled right off the jacket, it was very comfortable to wear. My large fly box did indeed fit into the chest pocket along with a smaller box and a leader spool in the other allowing me to leave the vest/pack in the car. The high temp for the day was 42* so I was also layered with a cap4 and an R1. I was over all very comfortable however because the Tough Puff is not wind proof I did feel the cold when wind kicked up, that is my only complaint about this jacket. For the price you would think it would be wind proof but I think that might take away from the breathability and stretch witch is desirable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this jacket I'm a fishing guide in Southeast Alaska and wear this jacket constantly. It held up to light to moderate rain and bushwhacking in wet forests. Good chest pockets for fly boxes, phone, or a small camera. The fit is loose enough to fit a bulky flannel underneath and still not be too tight to cast with. The only minor qualm I have with it is the inside of the sleeves aren't 'smooth' like their other puffy jackets, which feels great on your skin if you're just wearing a t-shirt, but it made putting the jacket on with a flannel or other loose fitting long sleeve shirt on a bit annoying. Again, minor, but the only problem I've found with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from puffy and tough I was given an early sample to test and have been wearing it since early 2017. Very warm as an insulation piece for cool and cold weather fishing trips, it is comfortable underneath a waterproof shell on the really wet days in the Northwest and worn alone, the dwr fabric sheds water well during a drizzle. The fit is cozy, yet unrestricting during casting, hiking, and riverside downtime. Plenty of pocket space for the minimal essentials, or loaded up with several fly boxes. I do wish there was in inside pocket. The hood is very form fitting, even over a hat and does not restrict views. Overall this is a great warm, multi-functional jacket for cooler weather fishing, camping, chilling and around town.
