Patagonia Men's Houdini® Jacket - Windbreaker Jacket

True To Size
July 28, 2021

Kinda slim fitting, but nice and light

Great lightweight layer, somewhat waterproof. Wish it wasnt slim fitting, I had to buy a size up to wear it over stuff.

Terrible design

This is the most poorly designed product Ive seen from Patagonia. The tag is so high on the jacket that is sticks out the top no matter what you do. The inside pocket is not sewn down so it also sticks out when the jacket is worn open. Also, this product came with a seam that was already coming apart.

Best option for chilly airplane flights and terminals

On the ground at my destination, the Houdini folds flat into a Ziploc (fewer wrinkles than stuffing into its tiny stuff pocket) and travels with me everywhere. A cold mall, cold Starbucks or local equivalent, cold movie theater. A sudden tropical downpour. The bang-for-the-buck in terms of warmth and wind/rain protection vs. gram-weenie weight leve... Read Morels is superb. But, at the end of the day, this shines, it's a must-have, for airport terminals - often frigid for late night departures - and for overnight flights, which in my experience run colder at night and colder still if you swing over the artic on a night flight. The on-the-ground situations I can back out of, retreat from, but if I'm miserable and on the verge of shivering in a terminal or on a flight, I really need, and really appreciate, the Houdini as my first line of defense. Also great under a jacket during winter flights, acts as a vapor barrier to help keep my skin humidified, seals in the warmth under a more breathable/permeable jacket or fleece, and also adds a hood (lot's of heat loss from head otherwise) and even pulls down over my eyes for sleeping.

No Pockets

I returned this item because it has no pockets at all. I never thought to check closely because I had never seen a windbreaker with no pockets. I paid return postage.

Thanks for the feedback John. This jacket only has a chest pocket as this is meant to be ultralight and every ounce counts. You may like our [Men's Steel Forge Windbreaker Jacket]( as it's got lots of pockets. Take care!

Great jacket

This is a perfect light weight jacket. I bought it for a trip to Seattle in August. Love the color and the pockets. Great value. And outstanding customer service.

Everyone Should be Issued a Houdini Jacket at Birth

This is just an incredibly useful piece of outdoor gear that EVERYONE should have. The two characteristics: VERSATILE and LIGHT. My new favorite windbreaker

Only problem is I wish it had pockets. Other than that absolutely perfect.

June 30, 2021

The layer you cannot afford to not bring

This layer is light, packs small, and is perfect for providing the little bit of rain or precipitation protection you need to get out and active. A go-to layer for bridging the gap between not needing a jacket and needing a rain shell. I recommend it to all my friends.

June 24, 2021

Great little jacket

You need to know what this is for but if you do, its perfect. I used it as a windbreaker on a backpacking trip where I knew there would be no rain. I used it over a down and cap base layer and it worked great to temps down to around 30. Seems like it would even work well with temps a little lower as well.

June 22, 2021

Grab and go

This is the first jacket I grab when heading out. It fits well over one layer but would need to be one size larger if you plan multiple layers underneath. I wear it hiking and paddling in changeable weather. Love it!

June 16, 2021

The best windbreaker out there

I absolutely love this jacket and wear it nearly every day. It is super ultra lightweight, and also keeps me dry for a while in a light rain. It protects against the sun too! Ill be buying another years from now when this one wears out.

Great piece for your kit

Wind and water protection, super packable.

Nice Jacket

I have far fewer miles in this than in the Houdini Air which I think is about as perfect as can be for four season use in the high desert and mountains with drier snow. This Houdini is more waterproof, more crinkly, but still very light. Would rate higher but it arrived with two small tears: one pin prick viewable only if held up to the light, but ... Great, packable jacket.

The good news: 1. This jacket will keep you reasonably warm in a pinch. Not 30F but have worn it in high 40F-50F and just for walking around not running. 2. This packs down to N_O_T_H_I_N_G. Literally smaller than a sunglasses case. The bad: 1. It packs so small that I have packed and lost two. 2. No side pockets, only a chest pocket that it pack... Read Mores into.

I love the versatility that the Houdini offers me. It's great for casual wear, gym wear, or even as a thin shell for the chillier days out on the road bike. Slightly small

I am 58, and fairly athletic. The medium was too tight , and since the material doesnt really stretch, I took it back and exchanged for a large size. Great jacket.

The windbreaker you didnt know you needed.

This jacket is so lightweight, I questioned its functionality. Until I put it on. This little thing is brilliant. Weight is nearly nothing and it does what it says - cuts the wind totally. Wind and rain proof

The perfect jacket for bike riding. I use it as a wind breaker and water resistant layer. When the weather changes out comes my Houdini jacket.

Awesome windbreaker!

Fits in a small pocket, great if you need a windbreaker, wide color selection.

Best purchase

Im 6-2 /215 pounds. Bought the large which fits well. Great purchase!

Stash it in every bag

This jacket is my go to in spring and fall in the Wasatch (Park City, Utah). I keep it in my mountain biking pack all season long in case of a storm or cold temps at higher elevations - it barely takes up space and is so light I never notice it. The most versatile jacket I own.

May 3, 2021

Great windbreaker!

The Houdini jacket is light weight, has adjustable fit and looks good. Our family owns several of these jackets in different colors. Houdini is an absolute must to own. Great to wear for golf too. It would be great if Patagonia would design another Houdini with hand pockets! !

Keeps out the chill and the rain!

So thin but seems durable. Packs down small. Keeps you just warm enough on a chilly summer night, keeps you dry in a pinch.

Best jacket

Love it. Best EDC jacket.

I will recommend it, light and fits perfectly

April 22, 2021

Super light wind shell

I got this jacket specifically for ski touring. I get pretty warm going up, but still want something to block cold breeze and flurries. A normal shell over my baselayer is too hot, and just the baselayer is too cold and prone to getting soaked. The houdini over a baselayer is the perfect middle ground - very happy with this arrangement. I've a... Read Morelso used it over a micropuff for a long day alpine climbing in a cold breeze and that was also a great combo. Feature-wise, the hood and hem adjusters work great. The sleeves are half elasticized at the cuff. My only nitpick is I can't pull the sleeve very far up my forearm. If the elastic went all the way around, that would be more helpful, but then you'd need a baggier sleeve.

April 16, 2021

Lightweight and the perfect layer

This jacket is perfect for those 20-45 degree days to wear a t-shirt under and go for a run. It keeps you warm without needing big bulky layers and it's lightweight and packable in case it gets too warm out for a run. I wear this jacket indoors too if I want a t-shirt and just something a little extra.

More Than I Expected

I've owned the Houdini for 2 months and it has become my go to light weight top layer for all things out doors. Very compact when in "stow mode". A great buy.

The Houdini shell is perfect for a light extra layer. I use as a warm up jacket when I start a strenuous activity such as running or biking. Easy to pack away once Ive reached a higher body temp. Great Windbreaker with Terrible Hood

There're two kinds of wind jacket, breathable and non-breathable. This is the latter. First, the fit is not trim as advertised. It's more like regular cut of Outdoor Research jackets. In other words, if you're an avid runner, cyclist or long distance hiker, you need to size down. I've put it thru the wringer. I've used it i... Read Moren 60+ mph wind in the Himalayas. One design flaw is the hood. In relative high wind, 25-ish mph wind speed, there's no way the hood can stay on your head without a helmet. Other than that, it's a good windbreaker. Just remember it isn't a rain jacket, so from time to time you need to reapply DWR yourself if you want it to handle some light rain, and also be aware it ain't breathable type. If you need breathable wind jacket, you'll need to look elsewhere. Another thing is the hood has the draw cord in the back of hood. The problem with this type of design is you can't sleep in it because the toggle will irrate you. You may ask ehy you want it to wear it in your sleeping bag. There are times your sleeping bag's temp rating is not up to the task, so you need to wear all your layers.

Excellent! Just what I hoped for.

I wanted a jacket to go on top of the classic puffer. I wanted it to be water resistant, with a hood, breathable and packable. The idea was I could pack both jackets down to a small size, chuck em in a backpack for a long hike or for a trip somewhere. The puffer fits well under the Houdini. Both are size M. Big fan.

Comfort for Mtn Winds

Mostly serves to deflect strong winds on Mtn ridges and the hood helps keep your hat attached to your head. Full length zipper gives good temperature regulation. The large is a tad loose by design to allow further ventilation.

One of my favorite pieces EVER!!!

So, I bought this for my son-in-law, as I have 5 of them, and he had 0. I love mine, so I bought him one as a gift. It fits him perfectly. It is great for wind protection, it's lightweight & overall one of the best pieces of Patagonia to own.

Please consider making a "Regular Fit" option...

Over the years, I have picked-up three versions of the Houdini. All are sized Medium, but the "fit" has changed significantly and considerably over time. The oldest version that I have still fits the best, with newer versions getting progressively more "slim." On the oldest version I have, the torso and sleeve lengths are perfec... Read Moret, as is the fit across the chest and around the waist. Unfortunately, the newer "Slim Fit" versions of the Houdini pull uncomfortably tight across the chest and shoulders. Sleeve length and torso length are still spot-on, but the newer versions are too narrow to fit comfortably across the chest and shoulder area. Please consider offering an option to select a "Regular Fit" for this jacket. I think that would provide the perfect size and fit for... you know... regular sized people.

January 28, 2021

Great layer, tight sleeves

I love the fabric and take anywhere size, but mine runs small. I have always been a large in Patagonia Wear, but went with the XL to get the color I wanted. Even in the XL the sleeves are too tight in the forearm to pull up.

Wind block

For the most part I am pleased with the wind blocking performance and compactness pf this jacket. The stow pocket however is a total pain- it is too small, which makes it much harder to pack than other stowable jackets I have and the fabric gets stuck in the zipper and jams. A strap or other provision for containing the hood would be good

Great raincoat

I ran this under the faucet of my sink to see how well it would repel water. Not one drop got through. I might trade up because rain results in cold conditions. This is basically a plastic shell with NO insulation. BUT it is as advertised. Excellent for a piece of clothing to keep you dry.

Why the pocket this way?

Ive owned the two previous iterations of this jacket. My first pair got busted up in a bicycle accident, though actually received very little damage. Since this piece is made from 100% recycled nylon and Patagonia is a leading brand when it comes to environmental sustainability I figured I could get that color Ive been looking for and sell my current jacket on the second hand market and keep things cycling. This new jacket is light as ever and I can say the upgrade in the cinch cords at the hem and on the hood does seem like an improvement. They may be harder harder to use with gloves but they are certainly lighter. The reason I cannot keep this jacket though is the chest pocket. Now instead of being seen as part of the rest of the jacket it is now separate. Kind of like the front pockets on a pair of jeans. So now when the jacket is unzipped the chest pocket can hang out as if you pulled coins out of your jeans and didnt put the pocket back into where belongs. Nobody wants that. And it just looks weird. Also, the logo used to be printed on, and now its a sewn on patch. Very small, sure, but this is supposed to be the lightest jacket and there is no way a sewn patch is lighter than a printed logo. And I cant imagine this new pocket design is lighter than an incorporated pocket like the last version. Come on Pat, what ya doing? Print the logo, and incorporate the pocket and I guarantee youre shaving off at least a gram. I cant keep this jacket as is

This is the perfect jacket for summertime showers or for layering during a rainy spring run. Very light and very water resistant. This is the perfect jacket for summertime showers or for layering during a rainy spring run. Very light and very water resistant. My only complaint is the chest pocket isnt sewn down so it sometimes flips into the way of the zipper. You can tuck the jacket into the pocket to store it so its more of a personal preference than a design flaw though.

Poor hood design

A couple of major fails prevent this otherwise excellent wind shirt from being a keeper. Read Moreo (works good as an overcoat w/ insulative layers). But what is so great about it? Well, there are three features that are my favorite: 1) The cinch on the hood keeps it out of the way really well when running and keeps it on your head. 2) The lightness of the jacket, paired with 3) the packability of the jacket is simply unprecedented. This is the ultimate minimalist jacket that I have found, making it an easy item to throw into even a small pack as well as hold it while running. All the while, the minimalist features do not take away from its wind-breaking capabilities, and it still remains quite durable. HOWEVER, the biggest warning I would give to anybody buying this is to keep in mind that it really is only a windbreaker. The houdini is not in the slightest bit a rain jacket if that is what you are looking for. The only "light rain" it withstands is like 10 drops, then it starts to soak. It does dry pretty quickly, which is a good feature, but DO NOT bring this outdoors expecting it to save you from the rain. That is not the function of this jacket. In the end, I have really been happy with this purchase. Just make sure to keep in mind this weather warning. Well made, well designed, great for little excursions you can't take much with, running, backpacking etc. Don't be hesitant in buying this....

Don't Understand the Hype

I really wanted to love this jacket, based on all of the incredible reviews for it. However, I found myself just not even packing it after a few trips out. What I do love about the jacket is the weight, self storage pouch, simplicity of the design, and the overall idea of the jacket. First off, the fit. I find in general that Patagonia jackets, a... Read Morend shirts, a medium is way too boxy in the waist/body, but a small is way too tight in the chest and arms. I ordered both sizes just to see what size fitted best. I am 5'9" and 165 lbs. So, even though this is a trim/athletic fit, a medium feels more like wearing a flag in this product which makes it less ideal for running and what I use it for. Second, while I love the light weight nature of this fabric, during two damp outings where I threw it on for some rain protection it literally shrink wrapped around me. I assume this was my sweat underneath that was causing this and not the fabric wetting through. The DWR repellent actually works VERY well on the product. However, you would have to wear this either when you are not sweating, the humidity is super low, avoid high-output activities, or have a long sleeve barrier to keep this from happening. Which, is impractical for the applications I am going to use it for. So after that, it got me thinking, I have other jackets that do all of the functions better than the Houdini Jacket, but perhaps at not the overall versatility of which the Houdini is intended (which is why I got it). Fortunately for my dad, I gave the jacket to him and I am going to search for another jacket to fill this role for myself..

I use it for trail running, mountain biking, and climbing. I’ve dragged it across a few rocks at Cathedral Ledge in North Conway and wore it mountaineering in Washington. Nice, packable rain jacket

Packs to about the size of an iphone very easily. Wish it had side pockets but it doesn't.

Very slim fit

I'd advise others to consider sizing up on this jacket, or maybe look at the "regular fit" popover. I'm a large in most jackets, even slim fit ones, but this one almost fits like a medium, especially in the arms. Fabric is see-through

I purchased this jacket in Folios Green and when I received it I was surprised to find that it’s completely see-through. Strange that none of the other reviews mention this, nor do the pictures online illustrate this. I get that it’s a lightweight jacket but it looks like I’m wearing a cheap semi-translucent rain poncho. Returning ASAP.

Why change the fit?

The 2018 Houdini was my dream jacket. Breathed great, packed small, offered just the right protection during aerobic activities, and had a nice trim fit. Sadly, I lost it on a trip. Different fabric and better fit

Fabric from this year is different, more soft, fit is better - not tight like 2018 Houdini, and with bit longer length. Very good!

Fits great. Warm. Packs small. Needs a packable hood.

I bought this jacket for riding my bike to work in the cold. It keeps me plenty warm. Then when I ride home, I just pack up the jacked and fold it up. The jacked fits great. Houdini Always with Me

The perfect jacket, great for a carry on piece on long flights to Ushuaia, the perfect piece to throw into fanny pack or backpack for any ramble into the mountains...small, warm well built piece of gear

Great jacket

Bought this for my husband. He is 6’4” and lean and the medium actually has long enough sleeves! He loves it! Packs down, easy to travel.

Size and performance

Sizing: I’m 6’0” , 180lbs and the slim fit Large works super well - not bulky but still allows for one-two lighter layers underneath, if needed. Performance: I’ve been really happy with the Houdini. Why change a perfect jacket?

After reading glowing reviews about the previous version of the Houdini I recently bought this updated version in preparation for my first ultra, but after trying it on a few times at home I soon returned it. Apart from finding sizing a little tricky (I have long arms and am usually a large in Patagonia, but found the large in this jacket a little ... Read Moreshort in the arms and small across the shoulder, whilst the XL fitted perfectly across the shoulders and arms but was a little big in the body) I found the drawstring at the bottom to be pretty poorly constructed. The cords themselves constantly came loose from the plastic bit that allowed you to tighten the drawstring meaning if this happened mid-run/race you'd have to stop to try and fix it (not easy with cold hands). Also, ther drawstring is bizarely only on one side of the jacket meaning it all bunches up on ones side when you pull it tight. I tried to convince myself these small issues were nothing, but decided to return it and am now looking for an older version. This is the second time I've had issues with new lighter/updated versions of Patagonia clothing (the other being 3 pairs of faulty Baggies lights) which is a shame as I love the company. My recommendation: buy the old Houdini.

Bought a Houdini four years ago and it still is one of my go to jackets. It has held up very good, a small hole opened in the arm but it has since been patched up. I have brought it on backpacking, climbing, multi pitch, canyoneering, and water sports. The fact it weights so little makes it a perfect jacket to bring with no regret on weight if its ... Good first impressions

Very much like this outer layer. It fits true to size, is extremely lightweight and packs down well. For such a lightweight layer, it delivers exceptional warmth and has withstood a few light showers. My only concern with this jacket is it’s lack of breathability. Go to

This is my all time favorite jacket. Goes with me everywhere I go, it’s pack-able enough to not even second guessing myself if I should bring it or not. I use it mainly for bike rides around town and any trips I might need a shell to go over some insulation. Works awesome for how minimal this jacket is.

Never go without it.

I'll add my voice to the chorus of praise for this amazing piece of gear. I was reminded of the indispensable nature of this jacket on a recent trail run in the San Gabriel mountains. It stopped raining about an hour prior to our start and the temps were in the 40s, so I began the run in shorts and a lightweight, long-sleeved top. The trail wa... I was completely comfortable in frigid, highly-variable conditions carrying and wearing a minimal amount of gear that simply disappeared and let me enjoy the run. If you don't have a Houdini, get one if you can. You won't be sorry.
