. Absolutely love them. Sizing?
I had to size down. Generally size 35 waist. Ordered 36 way too large. Ordered 34 and they are perfect. Absolutely love them.
These are great shorts. Durable but light. Pockets are the right size and in the right places. Roomy to move but not baggy. Good length. I got one size up and they're perfect for me. After testing one pair, I got two more pairs.
I just purchased my second pair of these and I am still just as stoked as I was on the first pair. I wear a 32 waist in most garments, but I went 34 in these based on reviews. I use the daisy chain adjustment on both sides and the fit is spot on! For reference, I am 6'1-2" and 170lbs. The liner was a pleasant surprise and has me rethinkin... Read Moreg bibs on the mtb. The liner does not provide much compression but they do not slide down, and the chamois provides the perfect amount of comfort without being bulky. The liner and short are cool and comfortable, and the cut on the outer short is a huge win in my book. These stay in place on both my geared mtb and my singlespeed, which has me out of the saddle and mashing on the pedals quite a bit. I'm old school and do not wear pads, but my enduro bro riding buddies like the cut of these and seem to think that they would be fine with knee pads. 5 stars!
Took advantage of the recent sale to try these MTB shorts. As others have said, they do run small. I have a 32 waist & ended up getting the size 34 as the 33 was just a little too snug.
I do like the adjustment hooks/loops to fine-tune the fit. So much better than velcro.
So Im not a mountain biker, more of an any road rider, and I dont always want to be in typical roadie gear. I have a pair of Dirt Roamers that I love but wanted something with front pockets. These are great shorts and the shammy is really good, so much better than the the other Patagonia options (the thinner ones). However, these run small. (Im 5 f... Read Moret 11, 184 lbs and usually take 34 in waist). They are the same nominal size as my Roamers but with these I have to really suck my gut in to button them up. I seem to have this problem with all Patagonia pants sizings: some fit really well while others are really tight (I go by the hip measurements since for me, the waist seems to be a fictitious number). That said, I do not feel any waistband fatigue on long hours in the saddle, although they would not be my first choice for comfy casual wear. Should you size up? If you typically find that your sizing in Patagonia does run on the tighter side then definitely yes. You can always synch them tighter with the side loop system, not an option with mine since they were already as loose as the system would allow.
This is my second pair of dirt craft mountain bike shorts. I haven't worn this pair yet but they are identical (except color) to the first so I am expecting the same experience. I ride 4-6 days per week and these shorts are comfortable, just the right amount of roomy and super durable. I highly recommend.
Based on a review of the below, I might be one of the few that think these fit just fine. I'm a late adopter of the baggy trend, as the first pair I tried got hung up on the seat all the time, so I stuck with lycra until these came from Santa. I wouldn't race in them, but I don't feel like I'm making a significant compromise in any way when I wear them.
Sizing that is far out of sync with other Patagonia products
These shorts run very, very small. Far out of line with other Patagonia products (e.g., if you typically wear a 32, you may want a 34 or even larger). I would not buy these online; only do it in a store where you can try these on.
A word of warning. I have several pair of Patagonia pants size 33 both shorts and long. I decided not to listen to those who said this run small and stick with size 33. As mentioned in earlier ratings, the size was just not close. I normally wear 32-33 and ordered 34 thinking i could adjust because of the belt waist hooks. Could barely button them! Once Patagonia realizes a garment is inappropriately sized, it should add that to the production description, not make people reads reviews to find this out.

This is my second pair of these shorts. I have the previous model before they went to a full size run. I wear 2xl in almost every cycling bib and liner I buy and never have this issue because the thigh bands do the job they are designed to do.
In the interest of sustainability and cost, just sell the outer shorts and Ill buy a proper Assos liner to go in them.

Perfect
Fit is just right. Makes cycling comfortable.
Will purchase another set next year.
Kinda insane how small these run around the waist. A 31 in most other pants is loose on me, and I wear a belt. For these, they were maxed out on the largest belt setting and still tight around the waist. They need to bump every number down by one to stop getting these complaints.
I am a real 34, they fit well and I could perhaps adjust 1 or 2 of the loop adjustments- that said I think they run a bit small- comfortable - I recommend as described

Best I have found
I own 3 pair of these Dirt Craft shorts (purchased over the last few years) and I still have not found a better product for mtn biking. The new liner/chamois is improved over the older model. Another winner from our friends at Patagonia. Smartly designed, the most breathable combo on liner and shorts Ive ever had. Go one, maybe two sizes up as they run small (as many have said.)
Well fitting riding short. Fits great after being washed but slowly sags.. fortunately there is a micro adjuster to keep them up. Pocket just fits my iPhone and is easy to access. Light but tough. My go to.
These run a little small. I am typically a 31, but needed a 32 for a comfortable fit. The material and construction is solid. The liner has a comfortable chamois. The pockets and waist adjusters are well designed. Personally I would like one more inch in length -- I like the length of the Dirt Roamer shorts for mountain biking.

But the pockets suck. The hand pockets are way too shallow. Stuff falls out when sitting down. Such a glaring miss.

Runs much too small and shallow pockets
I take a 30 or 31" waist usually and so I ordered a 32 expecting to be able to cinch these down with the adjustment straps. I tried them on and could barely button them. I looked down expecting to see that they shipped with the adjustment straps set high, but nope. They were set to the loosest loops on both sides, so I have to return them.

Felt just like a pair of older stretch baggies I have. The chamois fits well and and offers padding in the right places while not being bulky (I'll likely order more). The front pockets are kind of small, but they hold snacks well enough. One thing drove me crazy, the phone pocket is on the left, rather than the right where I'm used to. My fault for not seeing that when I ordered, but maybe I'll get used to it.
These shorts and liner feel good on the bike. I like having something other than just my road bibs to wear. The fact that the liner is removable is a big bonus. I wear the shorts ALL the time. It's a nice combo.
The waist is a tad on the small size for my and I am a pretty standard 32" waist.
Super happy with the shorts. Like everything else I own of Patagonia it is incredibly well made and durable. Light and functional. Had to size up to a 36 because my thighs barely fit in the 34. I was happy to finally see a green version of these shorts. After reading the recent reviews here I decided to size up from 34 to 36 and Im glad I did. I ordered both sizes and I cant get close to closing waist on the 34s. I have a L from 2016, a L from 2017, and a 34 from 2019 that all fit the same as this 36.
These are very comfortable shorts to ride in. Glad I read the reviews and ordered two sizes up. I am a 32 waist, however, I ordered a 34 and they fit perfect. While I love these pants there are a few things I would change. I wish I could adjust the length. I had to size up in waist because they run small, so they are a little long. I would think shorter or adjustable. But these are great pants and love the fact you can take out the liners. Great short for rides in the woods.
Had a heckuva time getting correct size. Im a 32 quandary pant, 33 canvas work pant, and 34 in the dirt crafts. Consult the size chart its pretty accurate. Patagonia please add corresponding liner short size to the menus.

Perfectly tailored
What's good:
Very comfortable shorts! Worn on a few 3 hour MTB rides without the chamois and they were excellent. I prefer these to my Fox Ranger shorts because these are better tailored around the waist and have slightly more room in the crotch area.

First the good: the Patagonia chamois is great. I use it for both indoor and outdoor rides. However, like the rest of Patagonia's lower body clothing, the sizing seems to have shrunk in the past couple years. I wear a 33/Medium in nearly everything and these were so tight I couldn't even clasp the button. Far from casual MTB sizing.

Nice Shorts
These are really nice MTB shorts, and the pad for the liner is also really nice. The liners are cut a little low at the waist line, which surprised me, but they worked fine during the rides. I would give them five stars if the liner was cut a little higher, especially in the back.
First I ordered a 30' waist. way too small. Then returned for a 32' waist. Didn't fit great. just barley fit. I am usually a 30' waist. Patagonia was good with the return and have to lose a couple of lbs. to make the 32' waist fit. Good quality though.

The inner liner, though, is too tight. There's no room in the front, and I was in pain by the end of my first ride in them. I won't use them again. It also came with a huge tag on the inside, which is very annoying. These should be tagless.

Very Comfortable
The dirt craft mountain bike shorts are awesome. The liner is extremely comfortable and the outer shorts fit perfectly when riding or hiking. Great product. Glad I read the review about sizing. I normally wear a 32 and the 34 fits perfectly.
I am 5'9", 152lbs, wear Levi 501's with 31 or 32" waist. I had to go up to 34" waist on these for proper fit. The liner for the 34" pant is size large, too big for me. Once I got the sizing correct, these are very nice shorts for cycling. Patagonia was good to work with on getting this right.

Hi Brian! Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We're sorry to hear about the disappointment with the pocket placement. Feedback like this is crucial to improving products for future seasons so it's much appreciated. We'll share this with our design crew.

Bike shorts
I had to return a pair and get a size larger. It was very easy and simple for a non- computer person to due by mail. The fit is great with the bigger size and like how it covers the lower back for riding.
These are light and comfortable but still seem durable. The fit is a little smaller than my Dirt Roamers, but have a more casual look and POCKETS! Would love to be able to buy these without the liner, but the liner is awesome too.
I have two previous pair of the Dirt Craft mountain bike shorts size 30 and the shorts themselves have become my go to shorts for mtn biking either with the original liner or over a regular bike short. Each of those pair fit slightly differently with the newer ones (2 years old?) being slightly roomier. The liner itself is fairly minimalist but I l... Read Moreike it for mtn or gravel biking, especially in the hot weather of July and August due to the mesh in the legs; the mesh is somewhat fragile and one pair developed a tear. The new pair, however, in both the short and the liner were too small in every way except I would say the length was as stated. The sizing was so different I couldn't fasten the adjustable waist band to even the first slot. Consistent sizing year to year of bike shorts seems to be a problem in many brands which is frustrating and makes buying online a hassle except when I can return to a brick and mortar locally. Patagonia made the process of returning as easy as it could be though there was a return shipping charge. The quality seemed high as usual and I support Patagonia's mission and values as a company.
These are great short. They are not too baggy but allow a good range of motion. Also, and I ride in Arizona so this is important, they are light and have good airflow. Critically, they also have good pockets. The phone pocket is placed just right so the phone doesn't bang my knee and the other pockets are also just right. 5/5 stars but for go ... Read Moreup one size (I wear a 33 in all other Patagonia shorts but the 34 Dirt Craft Shorts fit comfortably snug on me).
Haven't ridden in them yet (Its march, in NVT... still waiting for the snow to melt) but I originally ordered a 36, which is my size in most brands, including Patagonia. But had to return for a 38. I could fit into the 36... but they were really tight. looking forward to trying them out as soon as the trails dry.
These are a top notch product that seems well made but the fit was too tight and the shorts are too long for me. I am 5'9" with a slightly muscular build and these seem a size too small. The shorts were a bit longer than I prefer. Definitely give them a try though.
I love these for Mountain Biking. I like the length, the pockets and the fit. I went up a size from what I normally wear because I can adjust the waist size smaller if I need to tighten them up. I like the lightweight liner it comes with too. This is my go to Mountain Biking short.

Well built-good function
This is my second pair of these. I really like the fit, comfort and performance. The leg pocket is perfect for my phone.
Hey Tom, thanks for leaving us a review on the Dirt Craft Mountain Bike Shorts. These shorts were designed to be lightweight and breathable for mountain biking, but they should still be very durable! If you'd like to check out a similar pair of shorts with a thicker material, we recommend the [Men's Landfarer Bike Shorts - 12"](https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-landfarer-mountain-bike-shorts/24900.html?dwvar_24900_color=CTRB&cgid=root).

The do it all mtb shorts.
This combo has been great to me, I got them about a year ago and I put them to the test, from short rides near home to enduro style riding, I even have bike paled with them and they just kept on going. Worth every penny!
These shorts were purchased as a companion pair to ones I've had for a couple of years. The inner short padding is a new design and a bit more cushy; very nice. These are the ONLY shorts I'll wear mountain biking - out with the guys for 2 - 7 hours. Thank you Patagonia - I finally found the shorts that are light, comfortable, and protective!
These are great, not only do I use these on the trail but also on my morning commute to work. My only complaint is they fit a little small, I'm pretty much always a size 30 but had to swap these for a 31. Other than that I'm very happy with them
Very nice shorts. The fit is a bit tight out of the box but with a couple wears and a wash is perfect. Chamois is also tight but the same applies.if you have large thighs, size up
I always get compliments when I have these shorts on. I love the fabric and where the pockets are located. The do run a bit small so I went up one size and was glad I did. I would buy these shorts again for sure.
Normally I wear a size 34 but my recent Patagonia orders felt slightly big. I probably should have bought 34s for these shorts. Other than that, I'm very happy with them, typical Patagonia quality. I expect to get years of use.
These are my favorite MTB shorts I own. I have the Dirt Roamer shorts, and those are also great. But what sets Dirt Craft above is the adjustable waist straps, the front pockets and the seemingly more durable material. Although, I haven't had any problem with the Roamer material, but they are thinner.
I've backpacked in these shorts and I... Read More've even wore them out and and about town.
My only hang up on these shorts, is how they are sold. For whatever reason, they are only sold with the removable padded liner, and the padded liner runs a little more snug in sizing then I would like so I never use them. The shorts sizing is spot on.
I am hopeful Patagonia will start selling these by themselves so I can stock up on multiple colors.
I have been a size 33 waist for years.
I originally purchased a 33 and the liner (chamois) was a Medium, very tight on a cyclists legs! Also the short itself was very tight.
I exchanged for a 34 and the liner (chamois) was a large this time which was way more comfortable if you have cycling thighs. The 34 fit me perfect.

It would be great to know what size liner came with the applicable waist size short. Perhaps even being able to specify a M or L liner.
Thanks again for a great product I will use for decades.
I really like these shorts so I bought a second pair. My only complaint is that the chamois is not working for me so I took them out on both pairs. I prefer to wear a bib any way. I wish this short was offered sans liner at a lower price point.

A functional short with pockets in the right spots. A nice fabric stretch with micro adjustable in the waist tabs to accommodate brews at the pub. These are my go-to shorts. Keep the pattern designs coming.
3rd pair I have owned. Feels like size / fit is smaller as I have 34's and they were too small, so this new pair up'd to 36. In general, a great short, durable and functional. My Go To MTB short
These shorts are super lightweight and comfy! Unfortunately, mine were a little tight, so I exchanged them for a size bigger than I usually wear. That solved the trick for me! The chamois is one of the most comfortable I've every ridden with. Super thick!
Great shorts. Liners are the best part. But the legs of the over shorts seem a little too long trapping heat in my legs. I found rolling up the legs to the length of the liner was much cooler during warm weather riding.
I work as a MTB guide in Arizona so its not uncommon to spend many hours in the saddle. Whether its an all day adventure or a shorter tour these are my go-to shorts and liners. I've been on a few rides with these now and they're great. First off: Zero chafing, very comfortable. Pockets are also designed well. I had an iPhone in one and a gopro in the other. Both easily fit, and were never in any danger of falling out. Zipper pocket also has plenty of space. Overall, just a really well designed article. Classic Patagonia.
The materials are great but I just dont think Patagonia shorts ever fit me right. Even sizing up the cut doesnt fit great. You also cant customize the inner liner so sitting on the cusp between sizes is difficult. I ended up returning the pants and just ordering the liner instead. The liner is great and super comfortable.
These shorts feel amazing! Love the ruggedness and style very much. Pockets are perfect and easy to reach. Fit is a bit snug, so went with one size larger than normal. My second pair!
I'm 5'9" 155, typically a 30/31 in size. I moved up to the 32 and feel like that is the perfect size. Move up 1 size than normal and you'll be happy you did. Liners are great quality and comfortable. Nice shorts
These shorts pair well with the Endless Ride liners and have been very comfortable on 15+mi rides. The only addition I'd like to see would be a zippered pocket for securing valuables.
Where I ride, there are thorns. These shorts are great when youre in a wide open trail, but when youre going through any underbrush, theyll tear on even little brushes with tiny thorns. Overall great bike short
Ive worn a lot of different bike shorts. From freebies as a racer to samples from bike companies. These shorts are pretty damn good. Ive owned a couple for 2 years now and theyre quite durable. These shorts are the perfect blend of form and function. The liner is comfortable and the shorts are durable. Great for MTB, gravel, casual road rides and hanging for beers after.
Picked these up as overshorts for trail riding and some bikepacking. The fit is cut slimmer through the legs than most baggies, which is great for when your ride involves riding, a coffee stop, maybe a brewery, etc. Still moves nice on the bike, never feel constricting when pedaling.
I purchased these shorts with an additional need to also get the accompanying liner. I am supremely happy with the quality of the materials and the manufacturing. All in all I wish they sold the shorts separately as I would buy another pair ASAP
From other reviewers who indicated these shorts run small, I ordered a 36 (normally I wear a 34) They are a little big around the waist but easily adjustable to fit perfectly. The zipper pocket on the left side is perfect for a fat iPhone and the adjustable belt loops are, well, ok. But you may not need them if your shorts fit like mine do. The not-entirely-awesome but acceptable NON-PRO parts: the little front pockets aren't really gonna do you any favors, they're pretty shallow. And the liner, though well-padded, is kinda see-thru on the sides. So unless that's the look you're going for, I'd cover them up with something when you hit the trails.
I have four of these. The liners are great. Mesh of sorts on parts of the leg. The outer shorts have little adjustable straps for the waist. Pockets for hands, or hanging out. Side pocket for phone. Use the outer layer for hiking or swimming. Multi usable on a trip
These have become my go to for all but cold mtb days. Lightweight, but tough, they feel great. The liner is comfortable, and great for long rides. I have 2 sets. Hoping for a third, as I really dont care to use any of my others.
Fast becoming my favorite shorts/ liners for long trail rides. I wear a 33-34 pant and had to trade out to an XL in these since they fit small. Wish there were more zippered pockets on them but otherwise 5/5

The fit is slim (for me)--I could probably get away with a 31, but I have more meat in the hips. The 32 gives me room to move without needing to tighten the waist cinch to the max.

Otherwise, the liner shows only a little more wear than the shorts, and remains functional.
Well done. I'll buy another pair if these ever fall apart.
I could use a bit more cinch from the waistband to counter my middle-aged shape, but the shorts are otherwise excellent. You know its a great product when you put something on and then dont think about it for the entire ride. These shorts and the liner have been amazing. I've used them at downhill park rides and XC trail rides. I have 2 pairs and will prob buy more next season.
So excited to see my favorite brand start developing clothing for my favorite sport. However I have tried both of their riding shorts and both have serious sizing problems. Great shorts especially compared to the dirt roamer which has an ill conceived waist cinch. Basically it cinches but doesn't stay cinched. But that's another review. Read Moreroper size and there is no room to loosen them if I have too many post ride burritos. Oddly the Dirt Roamers seem to run well larger than size.
Positives - three pockets, pretty lightweight, seams are fully stitched and should last much longer than Dirt Roamer. Appears durable enough for the lightweight category.
Negatives - Front pockets rather shallow, should be sold w/ out a liner. Liners are a dime a dozen, and I wear the much better Troy Lee's w/ built in hip and thigh pads, so these liners are an extra expense likely many experienced riders don't need. The two front pockets are pretty shallow, so don't put anything in there that you can't afford to lose while riding. Fine for walking around though.
Don't want to sound overly negative, but Patagonia are just not managing this category well, and after 30 years of purchasing their products, I'm allowed to be honest if they have my hard earned money. Every mtb short in the Men's category is a miss. You can do much better with a little thought. If I didn't have a credit to burn, I would have asked for a full refund and shopped elsewhere. Will be interesting to see if Patagonia published this review, as they seem to be slow to add the not-so-rosy ones. Happy riding.
These shorts have been terrific for me. The liner works well and is comfortable. The shorts do run small. The included liner is well padded and excellent quality. I ride multiple times per week and it is my new favorite. Also has convenient pockets including a secure zipper pocket. You will not be disappointed!
Awesome shorts, ride with them daily. Not only do they stand up to use better than competitors but the chamois is far more comfortable after countless trail rides than any competitor
