Love these shorts. The built in boxer briefs fit perfectly snug will the fabric lets you breath. The length and fit are all perfect and the best part is the zipper pockets!!

Best running shorts ever

These are my second pair of Strider Pro shorts (first pair was 5") and they are awesome. I wear them multiple times a week and like a perfect running apparel item, you never notice you're wearing them. Great pockets, easy to use, quick drying, super comfortable. I'll definitely buy more if these ever wear out (I doubt they will this ... Read Moredecade).

Barely There

So comfortable I barley notice them while running.

Very light

Great shorts. These are purpose-built for running, not hanging around town. Thanks to Patagonia for making such light, functional running gear. Pockets are excellent--spare but there.

Amazing and Comfortable

LOVE these and highly recommend! I'm about 6'2" and 225-230, would probably go with an XL as they are a little tight, but the "plan" is to lose a few more lbs, so I think they'll be perfect!

light weight Pro Shorts

I can see where a young fast runner would love them as there is a cell phone pocket and a little pocket for car key. Very light weight and good for hot races. not very practical for older runner. I received these as a gift and was pleased until I saw they have a brief liner....I tried them and, as suspected, hated the liner. I'm a boxer brief guy and this liner completely ruined the shorts. Terrible liner, have to return

Really wanted to love these shorts, ran with them twice and each time the liner was rubbing terribly against my upper leg. Ended each run with serious chaffing. Was really optimistic because the short exterior, especially the pockets seem great but the lining is way too short. Have to return.

Internal Liner: A "Brief" Complaint

I bought my first pair of these (reluctantly) about 6 years ago. I was skeptical of the internal liner, (okay, so it's underwear) but I got very used to the boxer brief liner in the strider pro shorts. I've been alternating pairs of these shorts for years now, waiting for a new color to come out so I could throw a third pair into the rota... Read Moretion because these shorts are great. Finally, Green! which is cool except the new liner is a "brief" style: no boxer. The edges of the brief are uncomfortably tight in strange new places where I do not want awkwardly tight seams. Great running shorts

This will be my ninth pair of the strider shorts. The development continues to get better and better as does the quality and the overall fit and feel. Perfect for long days on the trail or even shorter days in the gym. They continue to get lighter without a loss of comfort and zero chafing. The only reason this is not a five star review is that the... Awesome Shorts

These shorts are great. Got a set of 5" and 7" ones and they're both awesome. My only complaint is that there's no way a modern smart phone will fit into that rear pocket. Miss the old liner like old adventure pals...

I own 3 pairs of the previous boxer brief liner 7in inseam strider pro; I thought between the incredible quality, and my own ignorance, that a dialed product would not be redesigned for the worse. Here I am after my third (maybe fourth?) attempt trying these redesigned shorts. They were literally the perfect short. I wore them year around, work and... Read More play, running, hot yoga, sleeping, backpacking, swimming, fun hogging, and hiking for thousands of miles and sharing countless smiles. I referred more friends, strangers, and clients to them than maybe any other piece of gear in my kit. Since those care free initial years, I have been nursing them along since I saw they moved to the brief liner. I have repaired, worn supplemental liners after blown seams, learned to sew stretchy fabric, rationed their use, hang dried and gentle washed them to extend their life, and convinced myself the chafing from breakdown still beat the replacements. The new liner simply does not work the same way, the boxer was incredible for comfort and preventing chaffing during any activity. You could literally live in them. and that was not only nice but necessary when I was working in the field. I gave the new ones a try and after poor fit and chaffing, exchanged for the normal strider (per the recommendation of the very helpful and understanding customer service folks) with the boxer liner but no pockets; it was a different liner and no pockets, more constricting fit, and a less dynamic material. If I could source that original liner material, I'd happily retrofit and repair my way to oblivion with five star reviews all of the way. While this note might have been a better submission to the worn wear blog, I do think it has a place here, reviewing these redesigned shorts again, as a document, a testament, an homage, and most certainly, a humble yet emotionally charged request to designers to bring back those award winning, crowd pleasing, pinnacle of the skies out thighs out experience. I've been holding out for years, and I'm adding my plea to the choir to bring back one of the finest pieces of gear I ever owned, and your team has ever made. One star for it still being a short, as fairly claimed, the second for retaining the pockets...

Great short buttttt....

I've had two pairs of strider pro 7" shorts. One is probably 7 years old the other maybe 5. I run a good bit and have put the majority of my mileage in these shorts over the years, including two 100 mile races, hiking the JMT and many other adventures. These have been by far the best running/adventure shorts I have ever had. According to... Read More my girlfriend it was time for a new pair. I had to order online and without checking them out because no local stores have them. I figured they'd be the same old trusty shorts. I excitedly opened the box and found that the boxer brief had been replaced with one of those shorter inserts. The one that used to be exclusive to the 5" strider pro. This was a SUPER bummer! I just know that these type of inserts don't work for me as I chafe like crazy with them. I'm finding its harder to find running shorts with the longer spandex boxer brief these days. Now I'm stuck wondering if I should return them or cut out the liner and wear a set of separate briefs. I just love the versatility of having a brief in the shorts. I do really like the new pocket layout sizes. My phone fits more secure than my 5 year old shorts, like my 7 y/o shorts do. The outer material still feels great and pocket layout is great. Patagonia, PLEASE bring back the boxer briefs. My skin down under will thank you. Heck, why not offer both sized briefs in the 7"? I'm pretty bummed. Looks like I'll be stretching the lifespan of my old trusty shorts even more, much to my girlfriend's dismay. I'd totally buy some older models with the boxer briefs if you have any left!

Great Running Shorts

These are great running shorts. The pockets are pretty small, so I never run with anything in them, but they work for holding my phone or headphones while I'm walking. The inner liner negates the need for underwear, but it is a little snug.

A Regression

I consider the 2018 Strider shorts (both 5" and 7") to be the pinnacle of running shorts, and was let down with this new generation of Strider shorts. The liner is a brief, not a boxer-brief. Odd fit, smelly

I really wanted to love these shorts. I own two pairs of the Patagonia nine trails shorts for hiking and running and was looking for something a bit lighter and breathable for hot weather runs, I thought these would fit the bill. They are indeed lighter and more breathable, but those pros are outweighed by several cons. First, fit: the outer is nic... Read Moreely sized but the inner brief liner is way too loose. As a result they are not supportive enough down there and this creates discomfort when running. Next, pockets: the rear pocket is nice for keys but the side pockets for phones are too loose and the phone or anything heavy bounces around like crazy; I have to hold my phone when running in these. Durability wise these are definitely not great; my nine trails shorts are 2+ years old and going strong but these shorts are popping threads after just a few months of usage. Finally, the shorts quite noticeably smell bad after a single run/workout, worse than any shorts (even cheap department store shorts) I've owned. Overall very disappointed in this subpar product from a typically stellar company.

Nice light short

I like everything about this short except its a little restrictive in the upper thigh area when running. Doesn't allow for full motion of upper legs. I also wish there were just basic side pockets. May 27, 2022

Incredibly light and comfortable, but you might size up.

I originally bought these in a size Large, as I have always worn L running shorts from Patagonia, but upon arrival, they fit like 1975 Boston Marathon shorts. Once I switched to XL, I am having trouble wearing anything else. They are so light and comfortable and the somewhat-hidden side slit is amazing as far as letting your leg move freely.

May 20, 2022

Good if you want to sing soprano

I have a slightly more athletic build and the liner in these is tight. Like really tight. Its a brief liner so it really digs in. The pockets on the side are all separate. So you have 4 mini side pockets and one medium-small rear pocket. None of which a modern smart phone could fit in. The fit of the shorts themselves is nice as is the material.

May 10, 2022

simply the best running short I own

It's soft and practical: side pockets are big enough for an iPhone 13 pro max, back pocket is big enough for a wallet and keys. I love the fabric and the inner underpants because they never chafe. It's baggy enough but not too much. It's just perfect. I own 4 of those. I only wish the material was more tear resistant.

In line with what others have posted...Strider shorts have been my favorite running/workout shorts for many years but the Strider Pro 7in shorts now run way too small in size M. The green color size M is also way too tight. There's just simply no room in the liner. Still my favorite shorts but the sizing needs to be fixed.

March 24, 2022

Fits a little funny but still early in my review

love the look, color, weight and length of the shorts but the inside underwear liner tends to rub in the wrong places. I thought it might stretch out a bit so I've used them 6-8 times, wash in cold water and always hang them to dry etc but no luck. The short itself also seems cut a bit tighter than the 9 Trails shorts. I'm now wondering if I should return them for a large or just wait to see if the fit issues are fixed in next year's model. I've never needed to wear a large in any running shorts from any brand, and never had a pair of shorts with such a tight brief-style liner before. I really wanted to like these shorts. I wear a size M in the 9 Trails shorts and I run in those every week, so I bought a size M in these shorts. The fit was really tight on the brief liner, and led to chafing on my first 8 mile test run. Also, the phone pocket seems like a nice location, but since it sits right against the band, it tends to pull t... Read Morehe waistband down in the back (normal iPhone 8). Great Running Shorts

Great Shorts. They are light as a feather and smooth as silk on the skin. So comfy I wear them lounging with the tots. thin fabric

patagonia always has quality items. however, these shorts seem to be of very thin fabric. i realize fabrics that dry quickly should not be heavy but to pay the cost for these shorts was ridiculous. i will not recommend them to anyone because of the cost. other shorts are available for 1/2 the cost and the same quality.

Awesome pockets

I own two pairs and have been running in them for over a year. Pros: True to size, good sized slit up the side, very light and breathable and the pockets are incredible. Read Moreide pocket when going on a float. I hardly need a vest on longer runs when I wear these. Cons: the liner is a bit too small and taught. When it gets warm out it has trouble keeping everything contained. I dont have too much of a problem with them, but they do chaff on longer runs in the cold. The material of the short is not durable at all. Ive taken a few tumbles down a mountain in them and each time have walked away with new holes in them. The slit up the side got torn up the stitching and is barely hanging in there with one of the pairs. Not a mark against them, but these shorts are not to be biked in, I tried it once and it was a lot of chaffing and wedgie picking. Bottomline: Ill wear these shorts until wearing them boarders on indecent exposure. Theyre comfortable, adaptable, and covered in memories.

Not quite perfect

Pretty good, but not quite perfect for me. 3.5 stars really. Material is the perfect material for very hot weather - you feel cool as the breeze. I thought ... Read Morethe pockets would be a problem for me and they're a bit weird for general use (holding a cell phone is not ideal), but they're so good for running that I can forgive that since that's their design intent/purpose. Let's be real... pockets are a must in shorts, so I won't even consider the other non-pro options for these. There are two issues with these shorts that I can live with but are really less than ideal for me. 1. - the liner is too tight. The liner material is awesome - super breathable and exactly what you want generally for hot weather but the liner cut is just too tight without enough material give in all the right places. 2. - this may be only an issue with the longer 7" shorts, but for me, the legs bind. I find myself constantly having to reach down and pull a wad of fabric from my crotch as the longer legs work around my upper thighs. The combo of these two things results in some chafing in sensitive areas that I don't typically experience in other shorts. I am not a typical wispy runner so maybe not typical but for me these things will limit their use.

Either way, both are great shorts to run in but I much prefer mesh liners and felt like there needed to be more reviews supporting the design change. Patagonia ruined these shorts

These shorts had a cult following. They were the best running shorts ever made. Pockets in the right places, and a spandex liner that hugged just the right amount and wasn't even noticeable when you were running. And then they decided hey, instead of the boxer-brief style liner, let's change it to a panty style liner with thick seams. ... Read MoreIt's such a bummer. I now find myself tracking down old stock before they all vanish.

GreatShorts!

Almost didn't purchase based on some reviews...would've been a HUGE mistake! Above and beyond what my older PatRunningShorts were/are. Money well spent.

Not the typical review

Inspired by Courtney Deuwalter, I decided to try men’s running shorts as I don’t like how short women’s are! And these are perfect! The length is great, the liner is comfy, the pockets are well designed. I love the bright blue (just a little different than the older ones my husband has that have the brief liner). They are cool and dry quickly. Ladi... Read Morees, here are the specs if you’re looking for fit: 5’9” 138lbs and the small is perfect. Thanks Patagonia for another great, functional piece of clothing!

Pockets

These shorts are great! There is a pocket for everything. the larger stretch pockets will hold a cell phone for low impact pursuits.

No more boxer brief liner = fail

These previous versions of the 7” Strider Pro were a perfect combination of fit and function. Now that the boxer brief liner has been changed to a brief style, Patagonia has killed a go to trail running and exercise short. The nine trails shorts are no comparison and not a replacement for the strider pro. Sorry Patagonia but you failed on this desi... Read Moregn change.

A Solid short but the liner is going to be removed

The Strider pro 7 shorts are solid. I like them. I love the external waist drawstring. Shorts with a drawstring on the inside leave a mark and become uncomfortable after hours on the trail. The rear zipper pocket is also exactly what I need. The two side pockets have a great semi closure and comfortably hold a couple of gels each. I would prefer th... Read Moreese pockets to be couple inches farther back as I sometimes nick a full pocket with my hand on the trail descending or on technical terrain while flailing my hands about searching for balance. While the outer layer of the short fits great, the short’s built in liner is too tight and the liner’s roundish hem stitching might be more comfortable if is was flat. No worries though. I’ll cut out the liner as I have in ever other pair of running shorts I own. I prefer to wear ExOfficio give and go boxer briefs rather than the liner.

Well designed, comfortable running shorts

I found these to be my favorite among all the running shorts I own. They are comfortable and supportive. I especially love the zippered pocket in the back for stashing my phone.

Favorite

These are easily my favorite running shorts. The older version was nice; however, for aesthetics, my preference is the squared look on this version. The fabric is light and airy. The pocket configuration is intuitive and works well. The brief liner works well for me, no issues - even during ultras. The boxer liner in the regular Striders is fine fo... Read Morer shorter casual runs but they’re not my first choice and definitely not for faster, or longer, more competitive runs (in other words, race day). This may be too direct; however, some of the reviews are mildly baffling. The name includes ‘pro’ and the description clearly states they’re constructed with a brief liner. There aren’t very many ‘pros’ breaking the winner’s tape at Boston, Comrades, or the WSER sportin’ boxers (Some? Sure. The fastest? Rarely.). Just sayin. It’s kind of like buying a pair of race skis and then complaining they’re too light and stiff. Or purchasing a pro race bike and then reviewing it from the perspective of a daily commute...stating it’s ride characteristics are not compliant enough for casual rides. Patagonia, for their part, told us exactly what/who this short was intended for and how it was constructed.

Great Shorts; Shape of Shorts Has Changed

Summary: These are great running shorts that wear and run very well on my current 5-15 mile runs. Compared to previous versions of Patagonia running shorts, they are only "okay", but compared to other companies running shorts, they are still great. Usually I run long runs too, but haven't tested these on any yet - however, I expect t... Read Morehem to feel and perform similar to my older Strider Pro shorts. The pocket system is still amazing... you can carry so much without bouncing or awkwardness (just cinch waist appropriately based on added weight). Unfortunately, I really dislike the new cut/shape of these compared to the more traditional cut of the old Strider Pro and Strider regular shorts, which were less boxy and had a curve along the side instead of this new slit. If I had known that Patagonia changed the cut of these, I probably would have bought the shorter 5" version... but this is silly aesthetic stuff that doesn't actually affect the performance of the short. My wife does think they look silly for a running short, because they just look like bigger, looser "normal" shorts and not running shorts. Pros: Lightweight, strong, fast-drying fabric. Moves and fits well. Amazing pocket system continues in this short, with slight improvements. Brief-style liner works for me about 85% of the time, but I have never tried the boxer-style liner found in the current Strider short (not the Pro version). Cons: Design has changed to a boxier looser cut, and I liked the previous cut much, much better. Sometimes the brief liner just bunches and shifts around causing discomfort and restrictions. Not sure about these, but in the past other very similar Patagonia brief liners have chafed me on ultra-runs. Otherwise, no cons I have found yet. (Just a side note, I've been struggling with many Patagonia items over the last couple years while I used to like almost everything I got from Patagonia... but I will say that this is a good short and the Airshed Pullover is one of the most awesome layers I have ever owned from Patagonia or any company.)

You ruined a great short

I have two pairs of the previous years design Strider Pro 7" short. They are fantastic. Now you have gone and added a useless and movement restricting short-inside-of-a-short liner, instead of keeping the previous brief liner. Terrible!

Lightweight

Fabric is light, breathable, comfortable. Liner - not so, tight, from thick fabric. But for short runs is ok. Maybe better one size up. Pockets is ok. In new version please make more relaxed liner briefs or boxers from more elastic and breathable fabric.

Best Running Shorts I've used in 30 years of Running

I've run numerous road and trail marathons and have used shorts from every manufacturer you can think of and these are the best shorts I've ever run in. Bring back option for boxer brief liner

I have two pairs with the boxer brief liner and they are hands down the best trail running shorts. I have one pair with the new brief style liner and while the rest of the shirt is top notch, the liner is not optimal. Would be great to either go back to the liner or provide both options.

Terrible Redesign

Patagonia's designers plainly don't run. If they did, they wouldn't have replaced the previous excellent boxer brief liner with a poor-fitting brief in this year's model. Missing the 2018 version!

The 2019 version with the 'crepe' liner is nowhere near what the 2018 boxer brief liner was. The same can be said for the pockets - the material in 2018 seemed to be more of a stretchy material. I love Patagonia and all they do, but these shorts were a huge miss.

"improvement"

I've bought the Strider Pro for years. I do a lot of long runs, and this short provided lots of pockets for gels and other items, plus it had a liner that matched the entire length of the outer short. The liner virtually eliminated chaffing, even in really hot weather, it was perfect! The 2019 edition eliminated the full liner, and substituted... I've owned the past couple of versions of this short and have loved them. Absolutely my go to for ultras. Perfect shorts for longer runs

I'm in training for a 50 mile race in July and have struggled with carrying enough nutrition in belts and vests. Great except for liner

Agreed with others here who say these shorts are great except for the tightness and material of the brief liner. I’d prefer some more room down there please. And it causes the outer fabric to bunch up between my legs and chafe. I never had the 2018 version but apparently Patagonia nailed it with those.

May 6, 2019

2018 Version was great, 2019 Leaves a lot to be desired.

The 2018 version of the 7" Strider Pro shorts were great. The material was light and comfortable, the liner was a boxer brief and really cut out chaffing. Also, the split on the sides was great. They had a slight rounding to the split and were more stylish than 2019. On to 2019, the 7" version of the Strider Pro's have a brief liner... Read More that is very uncomfortable. Staying with the same size as 2018, (5'9" 145 lbs) (size medium) seems to be the best choice still but they do not fit as well as the 2018 version. 2019 version are larger. The pockets remain mostly the same and they are the best on the market. Please Patagonia, go back to the liner material from 2018 and make the 7" version a boxer brief. If a person wants ultra minimal they can purchase the 5" and have a brief only liner. Also, to note: I purchased the regular Strider shorts for 2019 as they do have the boxer brief liner, yet they are nowhere close to as comfortable as the 2018 Strider Pro and the pockets are lacking. I did not review the 2018 version of the Strider Pro, but had I, they would have been 5 stars.

Better have some loob on you!

I usually fall in love with Patagonia products and see the extra cash spent as an investment for a lifetime of worn wear adventures, however the liners in these shorts bunch up so much that I can't run more then 10 miles without chafing inner thigh pain.

Bit tight around the package

Great material - very light weight. I prefer running shorts with an integrated brief which is why I bought it. However, this one is a bit tight around the package.

Absolutely Best Running Short except for the liner

The external design and material make this literally the best short I've ever run in. Pockets work great for gels without any jostling.
