I'm 6'0" and 190lb, and normally wear M in all my Patagonia outerwear, but the M in this coat had comically short arms and short trunk. The L was the right length everywhere, but too roomy. I got it anyway because it's such an amazing jacket in every other regard: great pockets, insulated, green color looks dope, and not at all ... Read Morestiff, and while I really wish it wasn't so baggy, I still get a ton of compliments on it, and it's a great Carharrt alternative.
Waited for the hooded version, disappointed overalll
This jacket is warm, has a generous hood and is well built. Unfortunately found the sleeves to be tight and short on the small (have long arms and am lean build, have a 31 inch waist) and sleeves still not long enough on the Medium. By the time the sleeves might be long enough at a large.... well, the waistband area on the Medium was already massiv... Read Moree. Received recommendation to hem the jacket for a tighter fit, however the sleeve ends are not canvas all the way down and have shredded jackets quickly in the past w/ only elastic at the cuff ends. Just might not be built right for this jacket, but it also runs short in length, the idea could be to keep it away from machinery....the pockets are honestly not much use, since they are both placed awkwardly and have depth sideways in place of vertically. The zipper top end closes tight and chokes out hard against throat (on both Small and Medium) and also catches in beard hair. To be true my partner (women's size Small) of the hooded work jacket was more comfortable and has guarded zipper top & insulated pockets. Not all is doom and gloom here, its a well built jacket, just not for me it seems.
Thank you for this thorough and detailed review Michael. We're sorry to hear that the fit on this jacket was awkward and uncomfortable. The jacket does have a relaxed fit, so it definitely should not have been tight in the arms; we're sorry to hear of this and will make sure that our product designers are aware of this fault. Since this is a work wear jacket, the material is meant to be tough and durable. Sadly, we don't have anything comparable in this regard but we do have a similar style you could check out; the [Men's Lined Isthmus Hoody](https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-lined-isthmus-hoody/20425.html?dwvar_20425_color=CSC&cgid=root).

Sizing off a bit
I really enjoy the ruggedness, warmth and quality. I normally wear a large but had to get an XL due to the short length on torso and arms. Tall sizing would be nice !
The item is a bit fuller sized but it hangs well and moves nicely when working. The insulation is amazing and not too thick and the hemp exterior is super sturdy and confidence inspiring. I did not expect this jacket to become an everyday wear item but here we are! It doesn't hurt that it has a timeless look and quality that looks like it will... Read More last a long time. Highly recommend and will likely buy for my partner and family in the future!
I got this jacket for my son for his Birthday and he loved it!!
It was the perfect gift.
He has been raving how warm it is and how well made also the fit was perfect. Not so easy for a big guy.
I have been raving on how fast he received it!
The construction of this jacket is really well done. It is of a heavy weight and the material isn't rough nor is it soft but it is tough and very flexible. The inside liner is soft and keeps you very warm. Definitely more of a cold weather jacket for me since I do get pretty warm wearing it, i wouldn't wear it in weather above 50 degrees ... Read Morebut that might just be me. For the quality of construction this is definitely a garment that will last you a long time and take a lot of abuse. Also patagonia does offer repairs on their products so imo it is worth every cent.
I have owned work jackets from Carhart & Filson - this jacket matches their warmth but absolutely owns those brands in comfort. The Iron Forge Hemp makes this a stellar wear from day-1. The pockets are killer too. Just the right number and location. These pockets feel like they were meant to be used not used for decoration. Love this jacket. So... Read More durable. Looking forward to passing along to my Son or Daughters one day!
This jacket is very warm compared to other work jackets I've had and the canvas/duck fabric part of the jacket holds up very well to abrasion. However the wrist cuffs and waist have already started pilling after only a few weeks of use. Also I always have to wear long-sleeved shirts under this jacket as the sleeves are very itchy. I do not kno... Read Morew if this because it has absorbed some of the dust from my work or if that is the nature of the liner. Other than these complaints it sits at a good height to grab things off my belt and pockets and the zipper and snaps are of good quality.
I have purchased quite a few workwear products from Patagonia since they created the line, most of which have a larger, oversized, baggy fit to accommodate layering. In fact, one medium sized top fit more like an XL, so when I placed this order I expected the same thing. Nope. This is a medium sized jacket, arguably a small. No room for layering an... Read Mored if you actually work outside, and find yourself bending at the waist for something, expect it to ride up your back. I am no plumber, but with this jacket I certainly look the part. I will definitely be processing an exchange, because other than a small fit, its a quality garment.
The coat is super warm, my son loves it. He also really likes the style of it. Purchased L but needed to return as sleeve length was too short. Exchanged for XL however would have preferred a tall option since the XL is very big through the body. He still loves it.
A great work jacket that is robust and hardy. Hemp and Canvas make for a great fabric. The sleeve cuffs and the jacket bottom are made of a stretchy fabric that catches burrs and any seed pod in the vicinity....Errrrr
Zipper could be a bit higher on the chin. Maybe a flap inside the zipper to keep the cold air from breezing in. Would like the arms to be about 3 inches longer. Im only 5 9 with short arms and the arm length is a bit short. Jacket itself is warm. Good pockets and durable.
I've worn this jacket down to just the 20's so far, but it feels like a well fitting worn in jacket already. Material isn't soft, but it's definitely not stiff like some other jackets similar to this that I've owned over the years. Stitching and pocket layouts are great, just what I expect from patagonia. Basically exactly ... Read Morewhat I wanted, and exactly what I expected. Solid jacket to last me a decade or more, that fits great from day 1.
We bought these for our guys at work, wood recycling company, American Antique Lumber.
Only complaint hand pockets do not slope inward to hold lumber crayons, tapes etc. items easily fall out. Give thru the winter we can send more info. So far so good.
