I was a little weary on purchasing this jacket with it having 0 reviews. I rely on reviews for online shopping. I liked the look enough to order and man I was not let down. Read Moree who is always cold - and this jacket surprised me. The length is great too - not too long like a parka. You still have access to your jean/pant pockets.
Bought this jacket for a trip to Scotland in the winter and I wasnt cold once. The jacket was a great fit, warm, and has lots of roomy pockets to store stuff. 10/10
I bought this for an upcoming trip to Orkney Island in the Fall. This is perfect adventure shell for 50 degrees weather off Scotland. I am 5 9 and it fits as a longer length waist coat. Would highly recommend!
Green color is awesome, decently warm and lots of pockets. Very nice and soft lining, and has a decently weatherproof exterior (I wouldn't bring it into a rain storm, but it repels water pretty well). I wanted to love this jacket so much. I am 5'10, 165. Small fit pretty well, not too tight or baggy. I know there is a longer parka version... Read More of the Isthmus, but still, I found it to be just a few inches too short. It doesn't cover the butt, and looks more like a young boys fit because of it. The length fits more like a bomber jacket, not a regular jacket. I wanted to try it out after reading reviews saying the same thing, and I loved everything else about it, but just couldn't get over how it felt a little too short and awkward. If you have a flannel or sweater underneath, those just extend past the jacket too much and the combination looks kind of weird. Patagonia, I think it would be fantastic to add a bit more length to this almost perfect jacket. Had to return unfortunately, and will be trying the parka version - which is not on sale like this one :(

Nice tough jacket
I had ordered an XL which is my normal size and it looked handsome no doubt but I returned it for the XXL so I could layer up underneath it in freezing temps when camping. The XXL also gives s bit more length which equals more warmth. Its a nice simple but tough jacket. It will be perfect for cold nights after (or during) fishing. Thanks Patagonia ... It fits perfectly and provides warm feel when you go out for a walk outside in a cold weather. Gives you great compliment from people who meets you everyday. Will definitely take care and keep it for long.
We ordered one of these in small and one in medium based on reviews that said the medium ran large. It didn't and the small was too snug so we kept the medium which was perfect! Great coat - light weight. Lovely brown color.
Well made and comfortable jacket in general terms. Warm and lightweight. Plenty of room for layering. I only miss that the shell would have been made of a softer material, maybe a mix of cotton or canvas. But apart from that, it's a good jacket for a reasonable price (I bought it on sale).
a very nice and stylish jacket. I wear it commuting to work. It's comfortable with just a button-down shirt under it in 32 degree weather. Haven't had the chance to wear it in below 0 weather yet.
Had my eye on this jacket for quite a while. The jacket seems thin but it is incredibly warm for its weight. Needless to say the jacket looks amazing and the quality and craftsmanship is top notch. Thank you Patagonia for a wonderful, fashionable, and functional jacket that gets me back and forth everyday to work looking and feeling great.
I like the way the jacket fits and the extra pockets. The hood is detachable, which is a plus in my mind. The material is little more rugged than the typical synthetic jacket. I have worn it in temperatures as low as 37 degrees with only a light shirt underneath. It was warm, but not overly so.
My husband would never take the time to write reviews so I'm doing so on his behalf. Being the great wife that I am, I went ahead and purchased this as a "Just because" gift. I really wanted this coat/jacket to work. The recycled materials are great and good for the planet. Snaps instead of velcro is a wonderful feature. Problem: Sleeves are about two inches too short.

Great Overall Jacket
I have not owned an outright winter coat for some time. My wife convinced me that this was a necessary purchase for my wardrobe. This coat fits great and looks great. Its very warm, but not too puffy. I dont feel that I need to wear an additional mid-weight or heavyweight layer, as the coat is that warm. Please be aware that the jacket goes to the ... Read Morewaist only or just past, but not any further. If that is a style you are comfortable with, then this jacket fits the bill. If you are looking for additional coverage, I would look at the parka version. The insulated hood is great. The double front pockets (side hand-warmers and top-entry pockets) is a great feature which I use all the time (ex. keys and dog bags in the top-entry pockets and my hands in the side hand-warmer pockets). This is already a great investment as I have worn it through 3 major winter storms here in the Chicago area and to walk our dog every night during the winter. Time will tell if the coat will hold up over numerous winters, but if this coat is like any of the Patagonia I own already, Im sure it will. I highly recommend this coat and Im only upset I had not purchased it sooner.
This would be a perfect jacket, but the size M is noticeably short if you are 6 feet tall. I would recommend Patagonia make this jacket a normal length. The parka has shearling inside and doesn't seem to have the same sleeves, so that's not an alternative.
This is a fantastic jacket. It is very warm, windproof and holds up in even pretty heavy rain. I have worn it down to 10s/20s with just a sweater on underneath. It's great as a winter, thrown-on-when-it's-cold jacket. I love that the hood is padded and detachable - turns into a real hat to keep your head warm and isn't too small. Def... Read Moreinitely more of an 'around town' jacket than a piece you'd wear hiking. I am 5'10 and about 185 pounds and medium is a perfect fit. I had tried the nano puff before this and could barely get it on, by comparison.
Two small things to consider - you will warm up fast if you're doing any physical activity. Even pushing my kids up the hill in the stroller in pretty cold conditions I was almost sweating. It's definitely breathable, just not as much as some of Patagonia's more technical pieces. I am considering getting a nano air for when it's a bit warmer and/or I am doing more physical activities in the cold. Secondly, the hand warmer pockets are lovely and soft but aren't insulated. They can be a bit cold at first if you put your hands in them.
Other than that, great piece - and I got mine basically brand new on Worn Wear for a steal! Great stuff.
I was looking for a jacket that would check many boxes for me. I needed it to be windproof as I live in western ks. This jack does great. 20 to 30 mph gusts and 20 degrees. I can walk through a store with it on and not sweat it out. I also needed a good hood. The hood sinches around your head and is very warm. I also wanted a jacket that fit well but could also layer if needed. This jacket can do that as well. I will say when I thought I needed to layer I got to hot. This jacket is very warm for how thin it seems to be. This is a great jacket and I would recommend it to anyone.
Lightweight jacket that's great for cool mornings. I love the fact that the closures are buttons and a zipper rather than velcro that can be annoying at times.
Fills warmly the need for layer-able jacket between lighter jacket and winter coat. Well-designed adjustable hood. Love the recycled content and fair-trade sewing yet quality materials and construction, durable snaps vs. degradable hook/loop closures.
I wore this jacket for the first time at an outdoor wedding where it was raining most of the time. The jacket kept me dry and warm throughout, plus it looked pretty stylish, as well.
I bought this jacket last fall from an online authorized retailer and made the mistake of not trying it on until this summer. Big mistake! Buy a small. As for the quality. It's a great jacket. A bit noisy when moving around but seems like it would be a good all-purpose jacket. All Purpose Jacket
I had my Bean 850 for about 5 years and really took it to task and I really was looking for a change away from the lofted coats that seemed to get soggy in the rain (and were hot when active). Read Morewas worth it as it totally beaded up and kept me dry. The jacket also was surprisingly light for how warm it was, but didnt leave me feeling clammy. This jacket combines the best of all worlds and only a slight increase in weight. I was looking at the Arcteryx Beta AR and went with this instead. Pound for pound and much stronger buy.
This jacket fits okay without anything in the pockets - and it is difficult for my husband to get his 2nd arm into the jacket. Zipped up it looks fine but getting it there with previous arm surgery is difficult. And putting anything - glass cases, sets of keys and cell phone - in the pockets is so tight that it doesn't look good.

Great jacket for any outdoor activity. I live in Chicago and it is warm enough for all of the weather I experience in the city. It is a tiny bit short, but I am a very tall individual so I expected it to be.
I bought this jacket for my brother who was traveling to the U.K. and he said it is great. The fit was true to size and it kept him warm they the changing weather.
These are great jackets. I have one in each color. I especially like the exterior material which is more durable than what you find on many synthetic jackets. I also like that the hood is insulated and detachable.
Great Jacket but Brushed Jersey lined Collar wears out
This is my 2nd Isthmus Jacket and my everyday go to jacket. AND the Brushed lined Jersey Collar WEARS OUT...over time. Patagonia need to use mid weight fleece that holds up over time. This could be a 5 star jacket but needs to have the jersey collar fixed and add Velcro adjustable cuffs instead of metal snap cuffs

Great jacket. I’d say a
Great jacket. I’d say a little thinner and a little smaller than I expected but great nonetheless
Really like the look and feel of this one - compared it to the isthmus parka and this one was far better overall (and better value!). The fit was just right, and the materials in the jacket are all solid. Definitely a good jacket from a great company.
I always have a hard time finding jackets small enough for me so that I don't lose most of my heat. This jacket fits perfectly and doesn't impede my movement either. 30-50˚ F temps seem to be the norm in the Cleveland area and this jacket is great for that range. The material has a durable exterior and soft interior - it is warm enough but not too heavy. The negatives: It's a kind of noisy jacket material on the outside. Not a deal-breaker but worth pointing out. It seems especially noisy when wearing the hood. Also: there was a definite scent that has lasted quite a while - also not worth knocking off a star but might bother some.

This is a very well made jacket and I like that so many of the materials are recycled and it is fair trade sewn. I always feel deeply compromised buying clothing made with synthetic materials in sweatshops.
Other aspects I like are:

also pockets with secure flaps above the hand pockets for gloves, hats, etc.
inside pocket
hood has no string to get messed up later.
hood stays securely on your head as long as the jacket is zipped up.
water repellent, so I can use it in California coastal winter.
Definitely the new favorite. I live at 8200' in the Colorado mountains and this jacket has been great for anything above 20 degrees and still good below that with layers. This is my third Patagonia product. Normally i was buying a size S (I am 165 cms tall with chest size of 36 inches and waist measuring 29 inches and i weigh 69 kg) but this time i decided to size down and i can say the XS fits me so much better. Would suggest sizing one size down if you prefer form fitting jackets. If you like your jacket to be more roomier and baggy then i guess stick to your standard size.
This is a very stylish urban setting jacket which i guess you can wear to more dressier occasions as well since the fabric and fit is very stylish. But it also looks and feel rugged enough for a walk in the woods. This brings me to the Sediment color which i opted for. I had read several reviews from people not happy who felt the color was more military olive green than brown. Actually the color in the picture on the website is absolutely a true reflection of the actual color. This is not a typical brown. However its also not also olive green. But because the fabric used has a sheen i can well understand why some people have said its more olive green than brown. But in truth it's sediment color as clearly mentioned on the website. Its a stunner and i just love it. My wife saw the jacket and immediately said she loved the color.
The pockets have a soft jersey lining and the zips are very sturdy. Enough space to carry a small bottle in one external pocket and gloves plus keys in another. That still leaves you with an internal pocket which can easily hold a mobile phone and wallet.
This jacket is Amazing. Currently living in Chicago and wore when it snowed with mild wilds, temp at 30s with a short sleeve t-shirt. It’s really warm. Have to layer it with maybe a sweater in 25 below. Still a amazing jacket though.
Excellent jacket. It’s light weight, warm and it has a much more abrasion resistant exterior than most jackets. I’m 5’9”, 170 and the medium jacket fits perfectly.
Nice jacket. It is light and comfortable but is still warm. Wore in weather in the mid to high 30's and in the 40's. My activity was minimal but I was still warmer than I was in my previous jacket from Bean's that was a little heaver weight. Fit was good also. I also like the fact you can remove the hood. Overall a nice jacket.
As a new resident of the Pacific Northwest, I was looking for a functional jacket that provided warmth and weather-resistant material. My adolescent son wears a coat all the time, and he is really particular about which coat he wants. Coat shopping is a stressful task given all of his requirements: slick liner (no fleece!),lots of large pockets, fits a lanky kid,can withstand serious abuse and constant wear.

Fingers crossed that this jacket can withstand the abuse for a couple of years!
As other reviewers have said, the Dark Ash color is definitely olive green, not brown as shown in the photo. Patagonia definitely needs to fix this by providing a more representative product photo.

The material seemed very durable and possibly weather resistant, could probably shed a light shower. It wasn't the wrong shade, no no, it was a completely different color. Wrong shade I could have lived with. This green does not show up from the colors listed, but I found what matched it almost exactly, on the Isthmus Parka, the industrial green looks exactly like it. I had no desire to look GI draped in olive drab, I wanted a brown work coat, and this is why I promptly returned it. If it had come in the correct color, or even better a lighter shade of brown, I would have undoubtedly kept it, everything else was exactly what I was looking for. So because it was my personal opinion and really not an issue if you know ahead of time, I am still giving this 5 stars.
