Great jacket (Gore-Tex version before they replaced it with H2No) but horrible zipper choice. Hoping they break in somewhat but currently it takes two hands and a bit of frustration to move any zipper more than an inch If it is not completely 100%, flat zippers do not work.
So far so good on the overall performance - great on wind and the limited moisture I've encountered. Pit zips work well after mogul runs. Chest vs. waist pocket take a little getting used to. Wish there was integrated hood storage/management system given its size when not in use (wind blows it up). Sleeve cuffs should have more flexibility to ... Also a place to hook gloves on cuffs so on the lift you can remove them without having stash them.
Let me start by saying i LOVE Patagonia and i'm a customer for life. I ended up returning this jacket and purchased the Triloet instead. I very much wated to keep this jacket as i prefer the stretch fabric as it's is quieter and sort of softer. The one deal breaker for me was the lack of hand pockets. I just need them it turns out. The pu... Read Morerchase was intended to be used as my all mountian snowboard jacket and rain jacket when needed. although without hand pockets i decided on a different Patagonia model. Patagonia add some hand pockets to this bad boy and you'd have a winner in me, yes i know those who use it with a pack won't be able to access those pockets but that's ok, it would add function to a different set of users.
High quality coat. Perfect for guys who runs hot and or like to layer up. The pockets are well designed (inside big enough to store gloves or hat+buff). Only ask would be to have a side pocket on the left sleeve (forearm section) for ski resort pass.
Awesome jacket, since I got it I have not had any issues of it leaking or becoming water logged no matter how stormy the day is. Packs down smaller than any other jacket Ive had. Doesnt sound like a plastic bag. Was skeptical of not having a powder skirt but the jacket hangs low enough and whatever grippy strip is on the back does a good enough job... Read More keeping snow out. Very minimalist, I could handle the compromise of additional weight to have more storage pockets, like a forearm pocket for my ski pass but it is marketed as a touring jacket so what are you going to do. Love it!
This shell performed incredibly on an recent, insanely snowy backcountry outing in Colorado. We were out in consistent snow for at least 4 hours and it kept me dry the entire time, including the uphill. Proper layering is key and different for each activity. It also performs well at the resort on chilly days with layering. Overall, I am majorly imp... Read Moreressed with this shell!
I use for alpine and resort skiing and found the shell to be excellent. I have a board build with relatively large shoulders/chest and found the large to be a great fit - was concerned I might need an extra large, but no! I Am able to get a thermal base layer, my bibs, and a Patagonia puffy coat under the shell and I still have freedom of movement.... Read More Stormstride+thermal base layer only works great for anything above 15F for me. Didnt notice the wind or being wet - in general did not notice the coat at all so thats a sign of good gear.
I liked the jacket OK but as it turns out, I like some place to put my hands more than I realized so I returned it. Also.... the sleeves were too long. Interestingly, the Medium arm length is 33". And the Small arm length is 33" too. Doesn't make sense.
Hi Roy! Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We're really sorry to hear about the disapointment with the jacket. The sleeve length from the center back to the bottom of the sleeve is 36'' on size small and 37'' on size medium. We truly appreciate this feedback and we'll share with our design team.

Stay Dry!
For the last 2 seasons I have been using an old shell as my ski jacket. In inclement weather, I could last about 3 hours before I was wet and cold. Not anymore. This jacket kept me completely dry in a whiteout day (Vision - 10 minute lift ride and you have half an inch of snow piled up on your legs). Customer service and attention to detail are als... I purchased the Stormstride jacket and pants in March 2021, and these items are by far the best backcountry ski apparel items that I've used in the past 15 years.
A few notable comments below.
Pros:
- Fabric moves very well
- Very resistant to tearing
- Front jacket pockets fit skins perfectly
- When fully vented, you can walk uphill at 25... Read More degrees without sweating a ton
Cons:
- The fits large (6'1" 190lbs, wearing size large, but could use something in between MD and LG)
- Wrist cuffs are tough to velcro over the glove
Quick note on the Stormstride pants - same pros as listed above, but the waist adjustment system is absolutely horrendous...and will 100% require a belt.
Coat fits me well. Very comfortable with enough room to layer. Do wish the zipper pulls were bigger for glove or mitten hands. Other wise a great jacket for backcountry and area skiing.
The jackets perfect! Awesome material- sheds the elements like a beast and the stretch factor is outstanding. Super comfy with plenty of room for a base layer. Keep doing what you do Patagonia. Leaders in the industry for quality, customer service, and giving back! Thanks so much!
Well, I did buy this jacket again in chartreuse in addition to Andes blue, and it served well while downhill skiing in flat light and the rain when having a high viz color is a benefit. Since reviewing my first jacket, I can supplement by stating that the hood functioned well over helmet and also helped prevent heat loss for added warmth. The jacke... Read Moret was functionally waterproof while skiing on a day of snow, sleet, and rain at different elevations. The jacket fit is athletic, and while standing (I am approximately 5 feet 10.5 and 167 lbs), it covered the top half of the butt and lay well. One small improvement would be to slightly enlarge the inner open glove pocket so that it would better accommodate a replacement goggle lens (the outer chest zip pockets can easily accommodate but I prefer using the inner pocket as it is lower). Jacket has sufficient venting at the arm pits to help shed heat. Velcro sleeve cuffs were easy to use and tighten up. I can offer no opinion (yet) on cleaning the jacket or the functionality of a modest snow cuff. This jacket folds and packs down nicely to fit in a day pack.
I ordered this jacket in a medium and then a large, neither quite fit me. The large was definitely too big in every dimension, while the medium fit well, except the bottom of the jacket was too tight. It would be a perfect jacket if the fit was relaxed slightly at the bottom of the jacket. Otherwise, exceptional Patagonia quality and build as usual... Read More.
Hi Chris, thank you for sharing this review. We're so sorry neither of those jackets fit you properly! We're glad to see you were able to return them both. Stylish, but doesn't pass the frigid test
Love the look of this jacket, and it performed fine in more mild winter temperatures (20-30 degrees farenheit), but when I took out on a cold day (-5 degrees) and layered up significantly, I was still cold. Would expect more from a Patagonia jacket of this price.
This Shell jacket was bought as a outer layer for a soft shell, storm days on the skin track and for warmer days. Used on a heli trip, sled/ski trip in frigid weather and on the skin track. It breaths, moves fluidly, and was great in the extreme cold and wind of a sled, covering a puffy. Helmet fit was great. Light weight and fits nicely into pack ... Read Morewhen not needed. I'm a 33" waist and 163 lb. I am about to leave on a 6 day winter AT hike in northern VA. This jacket just arrived in time. Length, shoulders, arms good. Chest is a little tight (I'm 40"). I usually wear a Polartech vest and a Fitzroy under the ski parka for single digit temperatures. My decade old and well liked Patagonia ski j... Read Moreacket "marigold" is no longer waterproof and this is the replacement. I'm afraid in the chest with this parka and that combination compresses the down preventing loft. So I plan to use a thick Patagonia snap pile instead of the down. It is about as warm in my past experience... but heavier and not as compressible..
Perhaps slim is encroaching upon warm.
This is a nice (expensive) windbreaker. Not good enough for cold weather in my opinion, even with layers underneath.
Unfortunately I won't be using this to ski which is why I purchased it. 3/5 is generous.
I bought this shell to replace one Ive had for quite some time. Thus, the context for comparison and review is dated. That said, the fabric of this jacket/shell is light and flexible, yet robust. It lays extremely well and is rather outstanding as far as I am concerned. Great fit with varying layers underneath. Purchased primarily for downhill skii... Read Moreng, the length will work for downhill or tele-skiing. First worn on a 15-degree day in variable winds with a mid-layer, it was windproof, and there was no noticeable wind penetration at the zipper. The chest pockets are deceptively large without affecting how the shell lies, and their capacity eliminates any need for hand-warmer style pockets. The outer pockets are augmented by an interior secure zip pocket and an open pouch pocket. Plenty for me. I did not employ hood and can offer no opinion as to fit over, and functionality with, helmet. For users who layer for variable weather conditions and activity levels, I think this shell will work well for multi-use, eg nordic and alpine. No experience to offer on functionality in a driving rainstorm or effectiveness of snow cuff. Cheers.
Used the coat today. 19 degrees with a 10 knot wind and snowing at the top of the chair lift in Juneau, AK. The helmet fit well under the hood with good visibility. Coat kept the weather out and moved with me while skiing. I could have used another layer under the coat for warm. Fit is good but snug. I would purchase again.
I have skied one day this season with this jacket and I have to say I really like all of the pockets. Hood is very nice. Quite material. Super lightweight.
A well thought out jacket in terms of features, pocket placement (including no hand warmer pockets which are not that useful with a ski pack or harness) and sizing. My new go to garment if I expect rain or wet snow.
The fit and feel of this jacket is a major upgrade from the boxy fit from my previously owned Patagonia Snowshot. The Stormstride has a more athletic and tailored cut. Looking forward to many, many years with this one. Thank you.
6'2" and 220 lbs, ordered a large and it's good to snug with plenty of arm movement. These sold out quickly over the last 2 years, so I grabbed one in the off season on backorder.
The tailored but generous cut and perfectly-apportioned helmet hood and visor (which comfortably covers the entire helmet without any stretch) makes this jacket stand out far & above other similar jackets I've tried. I'm eager to see how it handles severe winter weather.
I needed a new jacket for backcountry skiing - I found this one and so glad I did. It is awesome. It's wind proof, water proof, super comfortable, allows for mobility and breathes. I'm really really happy and I love the color to boot. Highly recommend!
