All good, except for somewhat tight at waist - not sure if it shrunk after being washed. I wish the sizes were numbers (36 waist) instead of L (large). Next time I'll try the X-L and see if that fits better. As usual, Patagonia customer service was excellent in fixing my order...
Great fit and quality, but the material has changed since the last time I purchased. The old model was much better for hiking and would air dry after washing very quickly.
I have been using these shorts for a while now and really like the fit.
The only issue is I have to replace them every 6 months because of tears in the material just below the crotch. Otherwise good product.
I have had probably 10 pair of these over the last few years. Not Durable, Not Quick Drying, NOT ESSENTIAL
I've had 4 pairs of these with 1.5-2 years of use now. First thing I noticed is that that don't dry very quickly. I frequently hang these and underwear from other brands to dry overnight. These are always damp the net morning while the other brands are dry and ready to wear. I also notice that if I sweat in them they get damp and just sta... Read Morey damp, they will never dry out as you wear them like others can. This is kind of wild because they are also super thin. So thin that when I bend over they become totally see through. The thinness also seemed to lend to a lack of durability because they all developed at least one hole within the first year. After a year more holes developed and I've retired them all at this point. This is probably TMI but when I spend $30+ on a pair of underwear it's because it I expect them to perform well and last for many years. I have a handful of pairs from other brands AND older Patagonia underwear that are 10+ years old and still perform better then these new "Essential" ones, plus they are in better condition and still wearable. I don't understand when companies have to take a pretty much perfect product and "evolve" it into being garbage.

Great fit but do not last.
I want to love these as the fit is great but they simply do not last long. Bought several pairs and have a good rotation going but they only last a couple of wears before developing holes in the inseam area. Not what I would expect from a Patagonia product. Fix the material but keep the fit please!

Great But New Design Lacks Durability
Great underwear, I wear them everyday but the recent ones I bought are getting holes a lot faster than the old design. Wont buy again until they fix due to the cost of them. Worth it when they last more than a year but when they get holes so fast probably not.

Essential Boxer Briefs
It's underwear.
Ok, The fit is good.
The three sewn in labels are irritating and not easy to remove. Evidentially the Patagonia Testers had butts of steel or the labels had been removed for them.

I found the product had good quality and fit comfortable.
I'm a long-time user of Patagonia briefs. Several briefs Style 32555 (made in Sri Lanka) are tearing where fabric is sown to waistband. Have had no problems with Style 32478 Capilene (polyester). I have no plans to return these as I have gotten a few years of use from them.

All day comfort
Fits great, comfortable all day long in cold or hot weather, never notice I have them on. (At night I sleep in the boxer version.)
These are the most comfortable boxer briefs Ive ever owned. Loved them so much I bought one for each day of the week. Sadly, the material in my previous 7 pairs all wore holes in the exact same spot (near the tailbone). Thankfully they were replaced under warranty. Im hoping the second round lasts more than a year or so.
I'm a 77 year old male so I have had a lot of experience with underwear. I can say that these are the best I have ever owned. I'm going to have to buy more because these are gonna wear out getting washed every night. I was gonna say every other night but folks may not know that I bought two pair.
I have a size 28 waist which should be an x-small but the regular small size fit me *perfect* and the waist size for the small is 30 according to the size guide. So happy they run small though, a 30 definitely would not have fit me. These are nice and firm with plenty of room in the junk pouch. Two thumbs up, I intend to buy more.

But man - they are without a doubt the shortest-lived underwear I have ever owned. I have had some pairs get holes within 3 months of owning them. And we're not talking small holes; we&#... Read Morex27;re talking the entire rear end gets ripped out and they're unusable. If you're OK with replacing them frequently, they're a good option but I wish they were built to last just a tad bit longer.
Comfy is something I take very seriously when using underwear. This product breaths, fits, almost like you have nothing on at all. Thanks designers!! I win because of you.
I've been on the hunt for the perfect boxer brief for 5 years. The material these are made of is extremely soft, comfortable and breathable. The waistband is also well sized with appropriate stretch. As I replace old pairs of boxer briefs, the only new ones I'll be buying are these.
Leg region is pleasantly snug and comfortable. Middle section is pretty darn tight but okay. Waistband is loose, with ripples/not stretched tight. I bought a medium and am 6'2" and 160 lbs.
Most comfortable and breathable (non smelly) underwear I have ever owned. They also finally fixed the inner tag issue and they are now made TAGLESS! So ignore any previous reviews from the date this is published. I think the 3'' essentials are the perfect length for these boxer briefs. It might seem weird but you can wear these for 2 days... Read More or so without washing and they are not gross...
I absolutely LOVE these unders BUT... I have to reorder them often because they wear out super quickly. I walk or hike maybe 20 miles a week. The walking friction is what is wearing through the light fabric.

Most comfortable underwear ever
I have loads of gear from Patagonia and other brands. To be honest, my favorite item is their underwear. It is a game changer!
Really Comfy, well fitting boxer briefs. I switch between the patagonia essentials and the arteryx merinos, and find that these are as warm as a premium merino boxer. the legs do well to stay in place and not ride up while im active or riding my bike to commute.
Purchased a few pairs of these on sale about 4 months back. The fabric is super comfortable and light although it doesn't seem to be too durable. After regular use, a few pairs have already developed holes in the fabric.
Hey Nate, thank you for the review on the Essential Boxers, we're sorry to hear about the holes. What you're describing would be considered a warranty issue, we've emailed you with more information to see if you'd like to return.

Comfy
Bought a pair in California and when I got home from that vacation I bought 3 more pair online. Im throwing out the others. Soft comfy no tugging Im impressed. Just pricey
I've bought several of these for my husband--they are his favorite underwear. They are super soft, breathe well, and slim-fitting without being tight. The 3" length is perfect under shorts and outdoor pants. Great quality. Highly recommend these!
Excellent fit, not bulky, extremely comfortable ...
The fit is excellent. They are not binding, but provide support and room where needed. They are extremely comfortable.
They are ideal to wear with stand up shorts, as well as long pants or suits.
The cloth feels good next to the skin.
I like the colors and designs -- the wilder the better.
Really loving these new Patagonia Essential Boxers. I have been trying different brands seeking a new go-to pair and have loved the quality and fit of these so far. They don't ride up on bike commutes and stay comfortably in place all day long. 10 outta 10 would / will buy more.
Here's the email I sent to Patagonia when every pair I bought failed. To Patagonia's credit, they made it right. They also asked me to post a review, so here it is.

Dear Patagonia,
I write to you with a sad tale of underpants.
Some time around 2015 you made what I consider to be the perfect pair of underpants, the Capilene Daily B... Read Moreoxer Briefs, Mens if I read my REI purchase history correctly. Style 32477 Fall 15. I bought several pairs of these and if you had kept making them, I would gladly keep buying them until the end of my days.
Eventually my older, lesser pairs of underpants began to wear out and I said to myself, self I said, imma buy some more of those awesome STY32477 Patagonia boxer briefs, because they may be pricy, but they are the shiz. To my sorrow, I found that you had stopped making them.
But OK, fine, said I. Patagonia makes good stuff, I trust them. I shall buy whatever it is that replaced my beloved STY32477FA15 in their product line. So, I took myself to REI and I bought five pairs of Essential Boxer Briefs, Mens, STY32555. This was in 2019.
Fast forward to the spring of 2021. To make a long story short, every single one of those pairs of STY32555 failed in exactly the same way the waistband tore away from the briefs, on the right hand side above my hipbone. My older STY32477 from 2015 are still going strong, theyre like new! But every single pair of their STY32555 brethren has failed ignominiously.
The first couple pairs I threw away, before I realized over the course of a couple months that this was a trend, not a fluke. Ive saved the last three pairs to fail, in case you want to do an autopsy.
So now I have finally made the time to write to you about it. I dont know what your warranty policy is on underpants one doesnt expect them to last forever. Still, I hope you will agree that something is wrong here, considering the coordinated failure of these bad boys and the fact that their older brethren are still fine. Im not sure what remedy to propose, since I imagine you will not be interested in restarting production of STY32477 (although I encourage you do to so, did I mention that they were the perfect underpants?).
Thanks for reading,
John
Just good underwear. Good longevity so far for the 3in boxer brief. Had the 6in and there was wear pretty quickly in the crotch. Absolutely love these. Came back for more.
There isnt much elastic in the legs so they tend to ride up. The fabric feels kind of cheap, disappointing for such expensive underwear. I was surprised after seeing all the glowing reviews.
I think these are the best boxers on the planet. I can do anything in them without getting in a bind. I've worn them for years and know they will last, which is why I keep buying more after I do finally wear them out.
I'm 5'11", 155 lbs, 30" inseam, 31" waist patagonia pant and 30"-31" waist for other brands, but wear my pants on my hips, not at my waist. Thigh diameter 20".
I could probably wear small or medium but I just got a couple pair of the Men's Essential 3" in small. The fit is great for my current body.... Read More By that I mean I'm not doing much cycling right now. If I was, I might upsize to a medium since the legs would probably be a tad too tight.
Well I have been purchasing these boxers over the years in the same style as Patagonia has updated the design to make these worse and worse over time. I wont go into all the negative things Patagonia did to these underwear but this version is the worst yet. The material is now much more fragile and ripped in the crotch area so so easily its unreal.... Read More There is a massive hole in the crotch area after just three months. They used to last for years and years and years. Honestly dont buy the navy blue as they will just rip on you. They are not worth the price anymore. Its such a bummer because they used to be the only underwear I would wear.

wish they were a tad shorter
love them, but wish they were maybe 1/2-1 inch shorter. otherwise, they're great.
Could be the most comfortable boxer briefs I've ever worn/purchased. The only issue is the durability, where holes and tears appear after 1-3 uses. The most recent pair I purchased had a tear after only 1 use and I'm unsure about repair or return since they're underwear.

Tighter fit than last version
I bought several pairs of the 3' Essential Boxer briefs a fews years back and am still wearing them--they were the perfect fit. The new ones I bought to replace the 2-yr old boxer briefs run smaller and tighter than the original so they are not at comfortable. I would not buy these again. Okay, Ill start by saying I hate to give these a 2 star review because I own seven pairs and have worn them for two years with nothing but great things to say about them: theyre extremely comfortable, they keep their shape very well, they look and feel very premium, and after two years of washing and tumble drying, they still look practically new. ... Read MoreI would have worn these for the rest of my life.
However, I recently bought three more pairs because my size and color finally came back in stock, and something has definitely changed. Theyre still very comfortable, but unfortunately after only two washes, they look absolutely horrible: extremely pilly and faded. Im scared to see how theyll look even a month from now. Now, this may sound silly, but if you had experienced how perfect they were before, you'd also be terribly disappointed. And yes, I bought these with a Pro account, but I would be far more disappointed if I paid full price for even a single pair of these and after two washes they looked like a year old pair of cheap cotton underwear.
Im uncertain if its just the black color, or if the batch I got was a fluke, or if every pair will look like this, but Patagonia, please, please, please return these to their former glory.
Love these briefs. There is quite a difference in size between the small and medium - I like some of each. They are breathable, durable and comfortable. What more can you ask for?
These are a dream come true. The anti roll waistband is legitimate. The butt doesnt stretch and sag throughout wear time. The leg hem is a wonderful detail; robust enough to mitigate some of the natural rising up/bunching. Havent had long enough to speak to the quality of its longevity. These are probably the best boxer briefs Ive ever worn, but I cant wear them because of the tag. Other companies print the information on the fabric or make tags that are easily ripped off. Soft, light, and a great fit! Very breathable, and have a fly. I've only had them for a few weeks, so we'll see how they last, but very happy with them so far!
This is the only underwear I have worn since they came out a few years ago. I always buy when new colors come out, so please keep adding new designs and I will keep buying. Great product!!!
I bought these originally for wearing under running tights. They don't work for that purpose. At all. However, they work just fine as everyday underwear. Very Good
I like that this underware is not made out of Capilene, which usually requires some sort of oder control. I prefer less additives on clothing. The TENCEL lyocell material is soft and comfortable. Lyocell is a great fabric and a favorite in the garment industry. The design of this product is well thought out and constructed.
