Multi Use Product

I love this piece. I bought it for many reasons. It's so multi-functional. The first day, I wore it on a 4 hour adventure hike in the mountains, in pretty cold weather (about 40-45 degrees) and I never got cold. It was the only layer I wore! Then that night, after a wash, I wore it to a dinner party. Love it!

Partially see-through

I loved the fabric and hoody design but the product is slightly see-through

Hey Marjorie, thanks for the review. We're glad to hear that you like the fabric and design. You're correct that the Capilene Air line is a bit sheer. It's all designed to be worn in a layering system, so that is something to keep in mind. If you're interested in a more opaque option, we recommend checking our [Midweight or Thermal Weight options](

Fatal Flaw

These hoodies are so great. I love the fabric and the way it functions in bother cool and cold temps. However, they snag on EVERYTHING. It is basically slowly unraveling on me one snag at a time.

We're sorry to hear that the fabric has not been durable for you. Your purchase is covered by our Ironclad Guarantee, so we will reach out to you to further assist in returning it and perhaps we can find an alternate fleece top that provides the same function and warmth without the snags. Thank you for taking a moment to send us your review, Jenny!

Most Comfortable Layer

I wear my Capilenes like skin on a daily basis (I live in the mountains and always cold). Merino layer first, followed by this Capilene Air layer, then everything else. They are warm and soft and fit easily under everything from snow gear to my Caliza Rock pants. And they wash well!

Unwelcome Change

On my third top because I love the first two from years past. Living in AK, I wear them year round. The most recent top is not soft like the others. Has an almost plastic feel. Bummed.

We're sorry to hear this fabric was uncomfortable for you, Erin! The fabric makeup actually hasn't changed since 2018, so we're not sure what might be happening here. In any case, we want you to be happy with everything you get from us, so you are welcome to [return]( this Hoody if you like. Please let us know how we can help!

Everyday I wear this top!

Sometimes there is clothing that should be washed but then it would have to come off your body to wash it and you couldn't wear it for a few hours. That is how I feel about this top. It is so warm. I found myself wearing it every day segment hiking on the AT in June. I wear it under a vest, I sleep it in, I wear it out. Love this shirt so much... So cozy and nice looking!

This is such a great piece, it looks nice enough to wear with jeans but warm and light enough for a performance base layer. I love the built in hood. Thinking of getting another in a second color!!

Only one flaw

And that a tiny one, especially when set against the excellence of this top. Unusually for a Patagonia garment, the interior tags at the back of the neck scratched noticeably. That moved me to cut them off, which, once I had taken out the homeless threads, produced four little holes at the nape. They'd be visible to a sharp eye if my hair didn... Too bad they changed the design

I have lived in Patagonia's Capilene Air Hoodies and was thrilled to see two new colors in this year's line. Unfortunately, when I ordered it, not only was the weave much looser than prior years but most importantly, they extended the length of the XS by almost three inches -- way too long for a functional piece. Best cold weather layer ever

I now own four of these. So warm and light weight and fast drying. Pulling the hood up over a hat makes it warm to sleep in when backpacking and if the day gets cold while skiing I pull it over my head and under my helmet for extra warmth. It doesn't get smelly with multiple wearing so its great for traveling and for hut trips,

So comfy and warm. Beautiful blue color. Looks great with everything I wear! Will be a nice layer for winter.

The Perfect Layer

I love the wool-air. I mean this is my 3rd over the last 5 years. Super lightweight, super warm and super comfy. I even sleep in it backpacking! Cuts wind like a champ too. I wear mine for all things from the city to the summit. Love!

August 31, 2023

Perfect Layer for so many activities

This is such a great layer. It packs a lot of warmth for its weight and layers beautifully weather over a thinner layer if needed or under a thicker. The hood is the absolute BOMB on this layer. It is perfect to slip under a ski helmet or a bike helmet on a chilly day - not bulky or baggy - just right! I cannot recommend this enough!

Something changed

I bought two of these previously and they were soft, comfortable, and warm, and still use them every winter, great base layer, except one had a snag and has a little hole on one of them. Lightweight comfy sweater

The color (Anacapa blue) is very pretty. The fabric is lightweight and seems warm. I am petite but busty and had to size up to a large. I am a small/medium in most brands.

August 11, 2023

Perfect mid layer

I was inspired to buy this stylish, functional mid layer hoody top from 2 friends wearing this in the Tetons. Love the stretchy fit, hip length, light weight ( for hiking/ backpacking), no zip hoody design. Perfect top for 4 seasons, with its merino/ capilene blend. Will bring on my travels as excellent all around casual-to-adventure mid layer.

Perfect All Around Base Layer

I love this base layer! I wear it every time I go skiing. It's warm, lightweight, and supremely comfortable. I almost always have the hood up under my ski helmet so my neck stays warm and dry. I like it so much, I got a second one!

better than expected

I was skeptical that this would keep me warm, but was pleasantly surprised when I wore it under a long sleeved cotton T shirt at an ice hockey game. Love the face cover and hood!

The hood with face buff combo is fantastic! The material is soft, breathable and warm. Fits great under a helmet and tucked into goggles while riding. Also hood is perfect over a hat in the wind. This year's fabric is different...

Last year, I purchased a capilene air hoody for my girlfriend, and it was love from the first time she put it on. Super Warm & Lightweight

I have three of these and wear them pretty much every day for either working at the mountain or free skiing. They are really comfortable, warm, breathable, and lightweight. I especially love the hood, which I can either pull up under my helmet or wear as an neck buff.

Cozy and cute

I wore this to layer up for a cold day on the ski hill. Super light but also super warm! The fabric is not opaque, even in black...if wearing it as your top layer, you'll def want at least a full coverage sports bra on underneath.

An all-encompassing-intuitive-hug

This layer is amazing. I used to wear one of Patagonia's sun hoody's under my winter layers at all times. This, however, has replaced that layer unless it is really tropical out. The best cold weather tech shirt

Incredibly functional but also super flattering, and looks good on work calls. I wear this on the coldest ski days, and it keeps me warm but not hot. Also the hood fits great under a helmet and the front pulls up over my nose to keep my face warm. This is the second one I bought because I rely so heavily on it in the winter.

Best Used as Base Layer

I love the design and feel of this garment. It does run a bit large. The fabric is very stretchy, time will tell how it holds up. The most breathable cozy & warm baselayer

I wear this layer every single day so far this cold winter. I washed it in a bag made for delicates, on the delicate cycle (minimal spin) in cold water, and hung it to dry. It dried quickly and did not shrink. awesome all arounder

I usually run between an XS and S in Patagonia tops with the XS being too short in the arms or tight over my climber shoulders. But this top fits great/snuggly as an XS! It's a hoodie to warm your head/ears, a buff to pull up and cover your nose it gets cold, a scarf and a thin warm layer that looks good paired with jeans. all around win.

Base Layer really warm with no bulk

I love it. Its warm without bulk. I typically wear an xs but I bought small in this - but I like my clothes loose. I came back and bought an axs and they both work - they have a lot of stretch.

Just what you need to enjoy the hill

I bought an air hoody last year for the ski season. I use to tolerate the cold much better than I do now, but I still love to ski. The only size available in the store last year was a large but I really wanted to try it out and I am pretty flexible with sizes and knew I... Read More could layer more with a large. I love it! One thing I did find, however, is that it is so warm that I dont really have to do the layering that I am use to, so this year I bought a medium and it will be perfect under my ski bibs. Most Favorite

I have this in every color. I take groups hiking throughout the New England winter and my whole crew ended up buying one of these. I stayed warm, even when wet, all winter.

Like a teddy bear hug, a really high tech one.

I took it on a rainy, Colorado mushroom hunt, camping trip this week. It was drizzling outside and I slipped into my tent, it dried quickly, the hood felt invisible and it didn't bunch around my neck when not in use. I slept in it all night and wore it into lunch the next day. PERFECT piece for everything. Really classy looking, no smell.

My Go-To Layer

I love my Capilene Air Hoodies, I have them in more than a few colors at this point and they are truly my go-to. This is a wonderful lightweight wool blend sweater with hoodie. The fabric stretches with movement nicely. Warm, but not hot, good wicking.

Love this top! I was skinning in the Bolton backcountry when I friend modeled her new Capilene hoody layer. It was love at first sight and it has been a staple in my wardrobe ever since. I can wear it to work and leave it on for my alpine adventures!

My favorite new chilly weather layer

Love this base layer and wear it as a go-to daily shirt as well. When it's chilly the high neck is great. I liked the first one so much, I've bought 2 others. It does pill a little bit and the tags are a nuisance, but I VERY carefully remove them.

Best base layer purchase in years

This top is incredibly warm and comfortable. The purple is a beautiful color as well. For reference, I am about 5'2" and 115 lbs. I got a small for my climber shoulders and it fits just rights. The only thing I am worried about is durability, but time will tell.

Cozy, light & warm!

I love this layer! For me its more of a mid layer as I run too hot to commit to this as a base layer...if this was my last option to strip down to in any sport that has any ounce of exertion Id be a sweaty, overheated mess. I essentially wear it as a technical hoody, so either casually over a t-shirt or if its cold and I wont be moving much Ill wea... Read Morer it over a thinner base layer. For this use, I went up a size from my usual M. I do own it in a medium as well, but find I prefer the looser fit of the large for layering over anything more than a tank top. Its stretchy, soft, light enough to bring everywhere and quite warm! I love the simplicity of the seamless pullover construction with the high neck and hood - though these same features mean I mostly wear it if I think Ill be leaving it on, not needing to adjust my layers to be comfortable - so either very cold weather or low heat generating activities. Its a great travel companion as it packs small and weighs nothing, plus can double as either a technical warm layer or a sweater-like casual layer that you could wear out to dinner (when thats a thing again)! My advice would be go normal size if using as base layer and up a size if layering.

March 8, 2021

Hi Danielle, we're so sorry to hear about the pilling issue. Because this is a knit garment, it does have a tendency to pill. There are few this that can be done to mitigate pilling. We recommend washing that item either by hand in cool to cold water, or separately in your washing machine on the gentle cycle. It's best to lay it flat to dry rather than place it in the dryer where the fabric can easily get abraded.   To remove pilling that has already occurred, a sweater shaver or sweater stone is an excellent tool and can help the garment look brand new again.  Of course, if you are not pleased with the performance of your Women's Capilene Air Hoody, you are absolutely welcome to send it in for a warranty returns evaluation under our Ironclad Guarantee,

Thank you for the review on our Capilene Air Hoody. Friction is what causes pilling on garments like this one, so the best way to avoid that moving forward would be to treat it as gently as possible. Wash in a garment bag without any other hardware in the load and with like colors, then air dry. This will help reduce friction that causes the pilling. You could also give it a go with a sweater stone to see if it can be removed. If you find that after all that, you're not satisfied, feel free to give us a [call or chat]( so we can discuss options.
