Perfect Base Layer

I originally bought this for hiking and skiing but its so comfortable and so well regulating that Ive been wearing it almost everyday. Cant say anything about durability yet but otherwise its perfect. The arms are plenty long enough and stretchy as is the torso. Typically shirt sleeves and torsos are short on me.

Warmer that you would expect

I hike with the dogs every morning regardless of the weather. This base layer is comfortable and warm over a wide range of temperatures. With a breathable mid layer and shell, I can be comfortable from high 20's to low 40's without ever getting cold or overheated. This is the first base layer I have worn that provides this level of temper... Read Moreature regulation. Seems a little pricey for a base layer but it's not. Works great!

Last Year's Capilene Air was better

I really loved last year's model of Capilene Air baselayer shirt (2022). The fabric was very comfortable and temperature regulating, which this new 2023 version is as well. However, last year's fabric was thicker and seemed of higher quality. This 2023 version is thin and see through in the shoulders, where it is stretched by body structu... Read Moreres, but not see-through elsewhere. This makes it look cheap and also I think it is less effective at keeping me warm and regulating temperature. Also, this new version, the shirt is really long, too long I think, like goes below my butt if pulled down. This is probably better for when the shirt is used strictly as a baselayer or if tucked into the pants, as there is no risk of it running up with activities, but I don't like how it looks or fits as much as before. The sleeves are also longer, which is not too bad..better than too short. However, I am 6'3" and bought a M and they are almost a bit too long on me. I feel I have to pull them up a bit, sometimes, but this is not much of a problem to me. I do like the additional new colors with this new season.... So, in conclusion still a good shirt, but the torso portion of the shirt is too long and fabric is too thin. I wear it more than just as a baselayer and think the last model suited me much better with how I wear it. I am glad I bought many of the last year's design. They are my favorite shirts.

Updated Capilene Air Crew Disappointing

I have totally loved the sweater since it came out. Yes, it pilled, but other than that it was a perfect sweater. It had a great slim fit that was always flattering without being too tight. It was incredibly lightweight as the name air implied. Now? Unwearable. It weighs quite a bit more. 209g to 167g. Maybe that doesn't sound like much but yo... Read Moreu can feel it sag while wearing it. The weave of the material has changed as well and it looks like a dress sweater my dad would wear. Also, a size small fit perfect with the old version. Now its way oversize. So disappointing. Hoping I can find several of the old version to stock up on until this new one goes away.

It's a daily sweater for me. It's almost perfect.

I don't know why Patagonia shows this piece on jacked model wearing a size too small. This is a baselayer yes, but it's the greatest daily sweater (tshirt underneath) ever. It's warm but not TOO warm. It breathes so well, but put a shell over it and it traps warmth. Wearing these since 2017, my only criticisms are two fold. 1) The ... Read Moreoriginal fabric process was better because the hand feel was a little bit more comfy. I have no issues with either on durability, I have a green one from 2017 that is WELL used. 2) Patagonia colors in general need to get brighter. This is outdoor gear, not fashion. I know Patagonia bases their color pallets on regions of the earth (rolls eyes,) but they need to bring back fire engine reds, visible oranges, etc. In all, this piece and the Nano Air series are the best things Patagonia makes, and it's my business to know gear.

Regulates Body Temp

Highest rating from me. In Montana, from mid-October to mid-April, I wear this constantly as a base layer. Wear all day, sleep in it - I take it off only in the shower. It regulates my body temp perfectly. I have four of them. I wear one for about 4 days straight, then throw into wash. Perfect match for me in the cold climate!

Great material, but is long

I like the material and feel of this, but it is too long for me in the waist and a little long in the sleeves. I usually wear a M. Returned.

Don't get it wet

I was caught in a surprise rain storm on the PCT wearing the Cap Air with a Houdini over it. It was dripping wet when I finally got to take it off. I know the Houdini is not designed for heavy rain, but I was surprised at how wet the Cap Air got. This is my second Cap Air, and I otherwise love the product. I believe multiple layers of capilene woul... Read Mored work better.

Best base layer

I love these base layers. Comfortable all day long, so comfortable I wear it as a shirt to walk the dog sometimes after a day of skiing. I’m in no rush to take it off. Very warm and light. I’ll get the bottoms this winter.

Good layer, just not as good as previous version

I'd like to echo one of the other reviewers who stated that this shirt is not as good as the previous version. I have one in a dark red that is my all time favorite light long sleeve - extremely soft and comfortable fabric. I can't seem to find that version anymore. I bought this thinking it was going to be the same, but the material feel... Read Mores markedly different and more plasticized than half merino. I still wear this one, but it stretches a lot and is not nearly as comfortable as the older extremely soft capilene air product that I purchased a few years ago.

Hi D! Thank you for writing us a review on the Capilene Air Crew. We're really sorry to hear about the disapointment with the current version. Pilled Very Quickly...

Had high expectations given the durability of all my Patagonia gear, but this item pilled within the first couple uses which is a bummer at this price point. The material in general is warm, comfortable and looks great (before the pilling). I'll still use this as a base layer but would love to see less pilling.

Response from Patagonia
March 16, 2023

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review and we are truly very sorry about the pilling issue you've encountered. Please note, to prevent pilling, we recommend washing your item either by hand in cool to cold water, or separately in your washing machine on the gentle cycle. It's best to lay it flat to dry rather than place it in the dryer where the fabric can easily get abraded. To remove pilling that has already occurred, a sweater shaver or sweater stone is an excellent tool and can help the garment look brand new again. With that said, your satisfaction is always guaranteed so please feel free to [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) your item at any time. In the meantime, we will be passing along this feedback to our Product Design Team.

One of the best products ever made by Patagonia

The Patagonia Men's Capilene® Air Crew - Baselayer shirt is a beautiful product. It is the most comfortable fabric ever created as a baselayer, but can also be thrown over a thin shirt... Warm. Specific. Not as good as the previous.

Updated with the Zig Zag pattern, the grid is no more. I marginally preferred the old ones feel. The old one was softer and warmer at idle while being similarly warm in action. The updated zig zag pattern doesnt look as nice in my opinion, though it does feel a bit more breathable. Moving on, the fit is still very nice. Its a good looking baselay... Read Moreer with its texture and tailored fit. It is warm! If youre shoveling hard or charging moguls it definitely heats up and it also vents that heat well. It dries very quickly on or off and doesnt feel stale once its dried. It is my warmest baselayer while in action, it really gets the heat going, sometimes too much. The Cap Air looks super sharp, the fit is excellent, and it is very warm while moving. Unfortunately I find myself reaching for my 250 weight merino more often. I still think its a very nice product with its 3D weave and its great fit. It will work well for a lot of people, its just not perfect for me.

Fit is somewhat tight

I have purchased several Patagonia base layer shirts, and have always been satisfied. This one was an exception - i prefer a relatively loose fit, and this shirt, after washing, fits very snuggly - especially on the arms.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review, Stephen. Sadly, this Air Crew is a slim fit so it will be a bit more form fitting than most. So cozy!

I have two of these- one hoodie one crew. It is incredibly cozy and soft. Some reviews say it is thin- yes it is, but very warm! I wear it as a base layer when skiing or outdoors for extended periods of time in cold weather- and to sleep in in cold weather camping. The hoodie version is great for skiing as it serves as a scarf/neckie/gator and can ... Read Morepull the hood up under a ski helmet. Also a perfect après ski layer by the fire with a beer! Pricey, yes- but it is Patagonia. Only minor complaint is some pilling in the material mostly on forearms where it gets the most rubbing. 6ft/170- Medium is perfect- as a form fitting base layer.

Very Thin

The pictures online make it look like the fabric is a thicker weave, but this fabric is super thin and delicate. It's more of a mesh than a weave and you can see skin through the fabric. It is 51% merino wool and 49% recycled polyester so I'm sure it's still warm but it was not what I was looking for. I'm used to base layers not... Read More being see through. Delicately luxurious

This thing is light yet it will definitely keep you warm. I bought it after reading some reviews. However, one word of warning, it is a delicate material make sure to have a fleece or soft shell over it as you should when out in the wild.
