This is my forth air crew and they are my most worn pieces in cold weather re: light weight, soft, surprisingly warm, and wash well (gentle cycle and lay flat to dry). As they get worn, they do pill a bit but overall such a great versatile piece.
This is my 4th Capilene Air top. I wear them as a top layer, not a baselayer. I normally wear a medium in Patagonia, but size up for the Capilene Air so I can wear them for everything. The fabric holds up wash after wash. I work in a professional office and wear these with suit jackets. My hoodie Air gets extensive use for cold weather runs.
It's a base layer, but it looks like it could be a light sweater. It keeps me warm and is very breathable. It falls nicely on my hips and doesn't ride up. I'm happy with it!
My love for this knows no end. Both the crew neck and the hoodie are staples in my wardrobe. Dressy enough for work, but the PERFECT top for running. The warmth/weight ratio is amazing. Very warm when layered, but is great as a warm up over a tank on warmer days.
I love this crew...it's warm and totally comfortable. I purchased one, wore it, and then ordered two more. I do wish it were a turtle neck for additional warmth.
My only gripe is that the fabric is delicate. There was some fricton wear on my back from contacting my backpack, after one use. Would only recommend wearing this as a layer and not on its own if you are wearing any gear with direct contact.

So warm!
Helps keep this farmer warm in Maine. Love the waffle feel of the fabric.
I think it is very comfortable and keeps you very warm, my only two challenges are that it clings to your stomach and it is really long. I would wear it as a dress. But depending on your height and body type- could be the perfect shirt.

That way the remaining edges of the tags won't poke the wearer in the neck. Also, there are no laundry instructions in English. Translation is easy these days, but why not include one more thing since there are 3 huge labels to fill up?!

Addendum to I like it but...
To clarify my previous review, the shirt deserves a 5 star rating, just not the tag. And Patagonia's response to my issue was great. Also, I have 8 of these shirts because they are the most comfortable, and best warmth for the weight base layer I have found. Also look nice as a single layer, and have held up well after multiple washes.

I can not remove the tag inside which has very sharp corners and pokes constantly. I have several of these shirts, have been able to remove the tags without tearing the fabric, except this last one. It is as if it is welded on with wire. Why? I would return it but purchased from REI.

Best Winter Aerobic Layer
I bought the version with a hood and love it. I came back around for the top. Absolutely loved this for cross country skiing. I stayed warm without overheating on really cold mornings which is a tricky ask for most layering situations. This is form fitting but sized correctly.
I bought a 2nd! This is my favorite top for running when it's between 18-30 degrees F. I pair it with a vest on the colder mornings and light windbreaker on colder breezy days. I do like to be warm when I run so some might find it too warm. I also love it for fall/spring backpacking when nights drop below freezing b/c it's so small and li... Great fit, looks sharp
So thrilled with the first one I had to buy another color. Super lightweight, super comfy, looks great. The texture on it makes it look more dressy than sporty; will be wearing to work to stay warm with that darn AC.
This thing is unreal - love love love. It’s an incredible base layer, breathable, warm, light and looks great. Wear it from the office to the skin track.
I get this top in every color, every season! Not just for myself, but for my daughter, my son in law and my son! One of the best things Patagonia makes, in my opinion! Light and warm! Between all of us we own at least 10 Capilene Air!
I used to wear smart wool but this is so much lighter and warmer. I wear it under a sweater in cold days and it keeps me cozy and toasty. Love it!! I have 4. 2 hooded and 2 not. Call me spoiled.

I heard there were sourcing reasons for why Patagonia had to stop making the Merino Air baselayers. I have three Merino Air baselayer tops and two bottoms. They are perfect in terms of comfort and breathable insulation. I was excited to see the Capilene Air as the next iteration and I appreciate that they took Merino out of the name as it is no lon... I find myself opting for my threadbare Merino Air tops over this brand new one. I will probably not buy it again and will look elsewhere for baselayers with a higher proportion of natural fibers.

My winter uniform
I have several of these tops and I wear them every single day. I like how it helps me to maintain my body heat. I never feel too cold or too hot in them. Past years, the tops have been a little too short in the torso and in arms, but not this year! I like how the material has some stretch to it and is longer in the arms and torso. I do find that this seasons tops do snag a little easier than previous seasons. Overall, the Capilene Air Crew is a wonderful top that lasts from year to year. I will continue to buy them as the quality is excellent. I would love to see them in green, pink or chocolate brown. I only wish it were cold enough year round to wear them everyday!!!
I can not imagine doing my job in SE Alaska on a charter fishing boat (or hiking) without this sweater. I also love to travel in it too! My husband bought this for me, with the pants as well. Skiing in the Rockies, its possible to get cold quick! This has minimized the need for extra layers! Its incredibly warm, but also breathable! The first time I wore it, I was sweating in 22 degrees! Amazing find, I will buy in more colors!!
The fit is great, especially the length, and the fabric feels nice next to skin, but it looks very worn after only one use -- the fabric pills and collects debris from everything it touches. My favorite!
My favorite layer. In the winter I wear this almost every day. Under sweaters for work or as a layer for running. It adds the perfect amount of warmth but is never too hot.

I love this shirt. I bought the first one I own as a base layer option and fell in love. They are super warm, wearable multiple days, but nice enough that I wear it in my business casual office from time to time as a sweater.

Itchy.
I miss thé old fully wool capileane layers. They were light weight, soft and fit wonderfully under clothes. They were also flame retardant and didn't itch.
I have this in several colors from 2021 and love it. I wear them all the time as a single layer from office to trail, all year around, and they're great. Unfortunately, the 2022 version is made from more recycled materials (a concept I love) but it feels like the plastic mesh bags that little oranges come it. It's also see-through - compl... THE WARMEST AND COZIEST!!
The Cap Air is a dream come true. It's like your fave thermal shirt leveled up x 100. It's cozy, warm, and is breathable so it stays odor free through so much activity! I bought one and loved it so much- I bought 3 more. Will be wearing them through the winter. I use it as a base layer under a jacket or Synchilla. Truly Perfect!!
LOVE the material of this, it is so so warm, cozy, and soft. It feels like a sweater, but is thin and lightweight like a shirt. Very warm for its weight, great for keeping layering simple when really cold. I even wear it casually day-to-day in the snowy winters (best as a base layer though). Highly recommend! Pretty pricey though.
I have ordered two of these in black and neither one had the grey piping along the hem or the sleeves. I exchanged the first one that was all black in the hopes of getting one like the picture. I just receive the replacement and it too, is all black. Please change the photo if it is not what the product looks like!

pls get rid of the tags
I have bought many Patagonia clothes over the years online and from diff stores. This shirt keeps me warm in the winter so I am very satisfied.
It seems the top size small fits me well, but the bottom was too tight although I ordered the same size small. So I had to order a medium for my bottom again.

What I don&#x... Read More27;t understand is that the fabric Patagonia uses for tags on the back of the neck is so itchy and rough. I always have to try to undo the tags. Why not use a softer fabric and make the edges better?
I tried to remove the tag from this shirt and in the process of it, I ended up making a hole. The least Patagonia can do is to attach these tags "lightly" so customers can remove them easily without damaging the item.
This is one of my favorite tops, and my second time purchasing one. First one in black. I was hoping for a nice burgundy option this year - thank you for delivering, Patagonia! It is great as a stand alone sweater, and as a base layer under a vest or jacket. It is warm, breathable, and has a cool texture.

Different material
I bought several colors of this shirt a few years ago and absolutely love the soft and thick material. My husband and I just ordered new ones and the fabric is completely different. Both the men and women versions were see through and extremely thin fabric. So sad to send these back because the prior season shirts are a wardrobe favorite!

Light weight base

This is a warm base layer that is so comfortable (I love the bottoms too). You don't feel any seams and the mobility is great for active wear as well as lounging around. I usually wear a small in Patagonia tops, but this item was very snug, and the wool was a little itchy with the tight fit, so I exchanged for a medium which feels great.
I want to wear it every day all day. It is perfectly cozy. Not too hot, not too thin. It looks great standing alone, but fits nicely under layers. The length is great for being physical, it doesnt ride up your back. I plan to winter hike with it as a base layer. Before next winter however, I may wear it out as I dont want to take it off!
I bought this as a snowboarding base layer but ended up wearing it day to day because its so cute with leggings and cozy. Went back to buy it in another color and it was sold out, next time!
One of my favorite layers on the trail. Fabric is great at dumping heat while channeling cool air to the core. Perfect if you're heading out in 40° and coming home sweaty in the 70°s. Read Morehe crew is newer and by comparison the hoodie is clearly holding its shape and defending its title as one of the most dependable layers in the mix.
The top fits perfectly: not too snug, not too loose, and I love the cable knit pattern. From my experience, wool base layers are itchy on my skin, but with this one it's not bad. I still wear it with a tank top underneath though and it does keep me warmer than other types of base layers.
Love this light weight capeline. Great for travel and transition to hike and walk and ski! Great layer with vest. Love the longer length for my height- 59.
Though I am not convinced at the durability of the material (and how long it's going to last before snagging on a zipper or the many other things out there) this top is super warm. It looks small, but stretches and fits at a "slim fit" but comfortably... not to tight anywhere, just tight enough to the body to layer.
I love this shirt, it's super comfortable, super warm, and I don't get stinky sweaty in it. Perfect for casual wear, and for playing winter beach volleyball since the sleeves stay put.
This is my go-to base layer for skiing and hiking in the winter. I also have the hooded version for colder days when I want something up around my neck. It is soft and feels very light yet does a good job of keeping the warmth in. I layer with one other wind proof piece and then my insulated jacket on cold days. Its perfect!
I bike commute year round in Minnesota and was tired of my synthetic base layer and decided to try this instead. So glad I did! It is warm, soft, comfortable and wicks away sweat so I don't arrive at work feeling damp. Love it!
I bought one and like it so much, I bought another one from Backcountry; I visited my daughter, she loved it so much, I came back here and got her one, as well! Great product!
I like the texture of the fabric and the fit of this shirt. The length is just right, it doesn't ride up, form-flattering without overly constraining movement.
It never goes to town, though. One needs a sweater shaver to address the copious amounts of pilling. This shirt is relegated to trail-only use, when it shouldn't have to be.

Pilling can be inevitable with knit garments as it is the nature of those fibers, though as you mentioned, a fabric shaver should do the trick to get rid of it and help it look good as new! To prevent pilling in the future, try washing it either by hand in cool to cold water, or separately in your washing machine on the gentle cycle. It's best to lay it flat to dry rather than place it in the dryer where the fabric can easily get upbraided. Warm and stretchy and soft!
I bought this to replace some super worn out base layers. It is perfect. I am usually a straight up medium (5'3", 150#, carry my weight in my mid section) but I ordered a small in this because I loved the purple color and it fits great.

A cold old lady LOVES and APPRECIATES this item!
This is my 4thCapilene Air Crew shirt...I really AM most cold blooded and need base layers that take good care of me...and this is THE ITEM. I wear them all day every day now that November is here. I absolutely love this garment. I use it as a workplace appropriate "sweater" in the office. I use it as a hiking layer, as a baselayer for skiing, and as a "put together" sweater for drinks out on a weeknight.

I bought this for a trip to Iceland and it worked beautifully. This top is very warm, thin (so you can easily layer) and comfortable. I highly recommend for cold/windy temps!
This base layer is fitted and will work perfectly when hiking in cooler temps. I am tall (5'9") and the sleeves and top are a great length. I can't wait to use this for an upcoming trip to Iceland!

Versatile Warmth
I have two of these crew neck shirts. It has the feel of a sweater and can be worn to add warmth for a walk as easily as be dressy enough for a business Zoom call or causal night out. I like a roomy fit, so bought a size up but, runs true to size.
I play lots of paddle tennis. Tho the weather is often cold, one can become very hot from playing. Love how this shirt sucks sweat. Just right. Warm but not too warm. I love this shirt and have bought others. Main go to for winter play.
I wanted to love this so badly. I mean the color alone! I would have put up with a bad fit. But damn was this thing itchy! I had to return it :(. More things in this color please, patagonia!!

Super warm and awesome at wicking.
I have recommended this top to all my friends and they love it too. It is all you need when you fat tire bike or skate ski (or any other sport that you warm up fast) in the winter with a light shell. Purchased two last year at the home store for a weekend trip to Ojai. Truly the BEST. Keeps me warm when needed but never too hot. Easy to stuff in your bag for when needed. This product is a great base layer and warm for cool hikes, cx skiing, etc. It feels like a natural fabric but has the benefit of moisture wicking. The top delivers on warmth, nice and breathable. That being said it does stretch out with wearing and has started to pill after wearing 3-4 times. Thats disappointing at this price point. Im concerned about the longevity of this item and the matching buttons. I was hoping to use these for years to come. I guess time will tell.
e shirt is super comfy and warm and fits so nicely. It does not cling when worn as a shirt, but fits nicely under a turtleneck sweater for extra warmth when needed. I love this. I was afraid the wool might be itchy, but it is not at all.
Perfect fit. True to size. The sleeves hit me mid hand which is perfect for cooler morning walks and they push up and stay put easily for when it gets warmer. Color is pretty - hardest part for me is determining if this shirt should be used as casual wear or for workouts/active wear. Such a dilemma!

I bought this base layer bc it looked soft and flexible online. WOW! I havent taken it off since. Its warm and soft and I can wear it for days without needing to wash it. I want to return other base layers I bought separately bc theyre unnecessary now that I have this. I ordered the pants version recently.

Large isn't really an appropriate descriptor, long is more accurate. Overall length and the arms. I probably could have gotten the XS but I don't like things too clingy. Overall I love it - great color, super cozy.

Does attract dog hair and after heavy use has pilled slightly, BUT I bought a Sweater Stone (as was recommended by staff) to fix that right up which it mostly did. Caution: be VERY careful when using a Sweater Stone on this fabric because I pretty easily tore two small holes in the front, which considering the price is a HUGE bummer and reduces the versatility of the garment (still functional for keeping warm but not great for looking good). User error and c'est la vie. I will try to nab another color when/if it ever goes on sale and recommend to anyone looking for a truly wearable garment. Would love it in primary colors, earth tones, neutrals, everything. Mock neck would be great too. I could just go on. Great for people who really value their material objects, as it is just great design. Bury me in this.
I wear this one when I don't need anything around my neck if I'm going to be working and getting warmer. I wear it next to my skin for maximum breathability. If it is super windy I add a vest. I love how comfortable these are.

Read More camping. its a somewhat delicate material so i wouldnt wear it climbing or hiking through brush but the breathability is well worth it. ive already ordered in the blue and know itll be a staple year round.
This base layer is super warm, but only after one wear and wash (I hand-washed and air-dried it) it developed a hole and it pills so badly all overit looks terrible. For how expensive it was, I was really hoping it would hold up longer. Super disappointed. :(
Thank you for the feedback on that and we're so sorry to hear about the pilling after one wear. Sadly, we do see pilling happen on knit garments and it can be unavoidable in many circumstances. So light and stretchy

For reference, yes I'm tall (5'7") and skinny (110#), and I'm a climber (muscular shoulders). So my fit issues may not be representative of the general public. But there's a lot of tall skinny climber chicks out there with money to spend on well-made technical clothing.

Read Moream a die-hard fan of the Thermal Weight Zip-Hoodie and thought there is no way Patagonia could top this. But they DID. I bought all three Airs in Large bc I wanted a bit more loose fitting. I am 51 athletic build, 36D. I am sure Medium would have been fine as well, but I like the beneficial effect of having it loose fitting. Incredible, keeps you warm but also with no other layers under you can go out on a hike starting in the cool morning and then stay totally temperature regulated when it get really warm in the afternoon. So incredibleit feels like you are wearing a light linen shirtthe fabric lets air just flow through cooling you down. During the winter I actually just had a micro down jacket over it with a thin capilene under my shell, and for spring skiing just wore a thin capilene and the Air hoodie under my shelleven when sweating and then a cool down period, I did not get a chill. It is an ingenious fabric.
This top looks great, feels great and is awesome as a base layer or worn alone. Mine have washed well so far but I do use the gentle cycle, Woolite and air dry. Just to let you know what a fan of this top I am, I bought one, and three months later, I have six all together.

I've owned my Cap Air (then Merino Air) since 2015, and it is the single most important piece of technical clothing that I own. You are pretty much guaranteed to find me wearing it while doing any outdoor activity when it’s under 40 degrees (cycling, running, backcountry skiing, traveling, …anything to be outside! It is the absolute best.
This is a very versatile sweater. Can be a baselayer or a comfortable and attractive sweater to wear for daily chores and activities. I also plan to wear it for yoga classes. It has enough stretch to be worn to yoga class. The sleeves are long on me, but I just push them up.
This is a real gem! A great lightweight sweater on its own, but I find it to be a killer mid-layer, where it provides excellent warmth under a fleece. Score, Patagonia.
